What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

Cantillon Mamouche lambic with elderflowers (super floral, lemon, honeysuckle, oak, funk - tastes like a Belgian wildflower countryside)

Drie Fonteinen Intense Red Intense Red lambic with cherries

Crooked Stave Motif Belgian dark sour aged in sherry casks

Lagunitas Sucks dry-hopped with Citra hops

...but how were they?

They were all pretty delicious. The Cantillon Mamouche was really unique with the intense floral character, but I really liked it. I thought the Drie Fonteinen Intense Red was good with great cherry character, but disappointing for the price ($32.00 bottle) in that it was a little too sweet and syrupy for my liking. The Crooked Stave Motif was really good with nice sherry barrel character. And the Lagunitas Sucks dry-hopped with Citra was a great variation of the Sucks. It was pretty fantastic with great fresh hop tropical, citrus, resinous hop character.

Bomber of Alpine Nelson. Unfortunately this bottle is a few months old, so the hops dont pop, but believe it or not its still delicious. It just doesnt have the hoppy kick it does when fresh. Ill take a Nelson with a little age on it over a lot of fresh beers.

Heineken buys 50 percent stake in Lagunitas

One of America’s favorite craft beers just became half Dutch.

According to Fortune, Heineken purchased a 50 percent stake in California-based Lagunitas on Tuesday in the beer industry’s latest example of the big players trying to tap into the world’s growing desire for craft beer.

Beer enthusiasts knew something was brewing earlier Tuesday when Chicago Tribune beer critic Josh Noel tweeted out a juicy tidbit:

With breweries in Petaluma, California and Chicago, Lagunitas is the sixth-largest craft brewer in the U.S., according to trade group the Brewers Association, and shipped nearly 600,000 barrels in 2014. They company has also expanded shipping to include the U.K. and Canada.

Per Fortune:

Lagunitas shipped almost 600,000 barrels in 2014, soaring from just over 100,000 in 2010, according to industry tracker Beer Marketer’s Insights. The market share within craft has grown from 1% to over 3% over that period within the U.S. Heineken’s beer volume growth, like other big brewers, is far slower,

http://www.theheinekencompany.com/media/media-releases/press-releases/2015/08/1943014in the Americas in the first half of 2015.
Though details of the deal have not been released, some are placing it at around half a billion dollars.

As Fortune notes, one in every 10 beers sold in America is now a craft beer, with that volume rising dramatically since Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest beer company, bought notable craft breweries such as Seattle-based Elysian Brewing and Oregon-based 10 Barrel.

“This venture will create a way for Lagunitas to let Heineken participate in the growing craft beer category across its global distribution network in places from Tierra Del Fuego and Mongolia to the far-flung Isle of Langerhans,” Lagunitas founder and owner Tony Magee said in astatement. “Lagunitas will share in the best quality processes in the world and enjoy access to opportunities that took lifetimes to build. This alliance with the world’s most international brewer represents a profound victory for U.S. craft. It will open doors that had previously been shut and bring the U.S. craft beer vibe to communities all over the world.”

The move is somewhat surprising considering owner and founder Magee’s documented disdain for big-beer.

That was addressed in a thread Magee started on beer review website Beer Advocate to discuss the deal in which he said he never discussed the deal with Miller-Coors or Anheuser-Busch InBev because “they don’t get it,” and referred to them as “bankers by any measure.”

But perhaps Magee, a Chicago native, had left clues in an interview he did with the Chicago RedEye in 2013, in which he said: “The global beer industry is being handed over to the next generation of brewers. You have to just keep your eye on the ball so that you’re standing there to catch it rather than worrying about who else is trying to catch it, too.”

He emphasized that the deal is a joint venture, and not a sale to a private equity fund, an ESOP or a way of selling the business.

Magee signed off of the Beer Advocate thread sporting a new outlook: “My mantra has become: The future will not be like the past. And so it shan’t. Furthur [sic].”

Tonight -- Heady Topper finally off the bucket list. Leaguemate from NY brought a four pack across the country for me. We draft in Vegas. I waited so long to finally try this one I think it's a little letdown but it's great beer.

I was at Ballast Point friday.

Sculpin on Nitro -- excellent, an improvement for me

Mango Sculpin -- hmmm

Pineapple Sculpin -- better than grapefruit

Bourbon Barrel Sextant Milk Chocolate Cappuccino Oatmeal Stout on Nitro -- yup

Also visited Mike Hess but only for a Habitus.

And then Green Flash for the Citra Session.

In Vegas pretty sure I ordered an MGD half sleeping at keno, but I don't know if I drank it. Almanac beers were free at my draft. I had a 22 oz Golden Gate Gose and a Saison Delores, passed on the IPA, it smelled too big in that big ol bomber bottle.

That Ballast Point Sextant has lots of words that I like...bourbon barrel, milk chocolate, espresso, oatmeal, nitro. Yum.

I allegedly have some Heady Topper coming my way next week as long as my mule can abstain from drinking it themselves.

This market is red hot. The Spanish guys who bought part of Founders have a huge war chest and there are a ton of smaller private funds looking to make acquisitions. The older brewers who started their companies 15-20 years ago are all going to be multimillionaires.

Making my award winning version of Smails' chili so ended up picking up a mixed sixer. 3 (or close to it) for the chili, 3 for me. It allowed me to visit old friends like New Holland The Poet, Great Lakes Eddy Fitz, etc.

Disclaimer: no potatoes were considered in the creation of this chili.

This is more of a what should I drink question, what are the must try breweries in Seattle?
I like the bars better than the breweries in Seattle. Fremont in, you guessed it, Fremont is probably the best all around brewery over there. I love Outlander (which is also in Fremont). It is a tiny nano in an old house with a really cool owner. It's walking distance from Brauers which is a great food and beer spot. Bottle works is also fairly close to there, but not walking. That's your best spot if you are looking to take good bottle home. Also one of the most impressive onsite bottle lists I've seen (as is Brauers).

If you happen to be in Capitol Hill go to Pine Box. Great bar that used to be a funeral home (and look for an Ocelot sticker by the taps).

Great food and cocktail scene in Seattle too. I really love it up there.

 They're better than beans! Please tell me you at least left the beans out.

No beans. Ever.

I guess my filler of choice would be oyster crackers.

In the interest of this thread, I added an Eddy Fitz, a Bells Amber and a Fat Tire. And put down a bunch of Spiteful IPA's, in the name of creative cooking.

Three Floyds Apocalypse Cow imperial IPA

Southern Tier Mokah imperial stout with chocolate and coffee

Station 26 Juicy Banger IPA

Kern River Gravity Check -- Wow did this surprise me. Had to check beeradvocate to see if i'm nuts. I agree with the first review, one of the best session ipas i've had. So refreshing and poundable with unexpected dank and nothing bitter in the finish. It's taken me awhile to come around to these low abv session beers, but I'm there now.

Heady Topper for the game tonight might not be as exciting.

Schneider Weiss Aventinus weizenbock

Brouwerij St. Bernadus Abt 12 quad

Comrade Superdamp IPA (Wet Hop Superpower IPA) - **just released today**

Comrade Hop Chops imperial IPA

The Comrade IPAs are world class beers. The Superdamp IPA is one of the best IPAs that I've ever had. It won a GABF silver medal last year for dry hop/wet hop IPA. Their head brewer Marks Lanham won three GABF medals at Grand Teton, brewed at Boneyard Beer in Oregon, and then brewed the 2013 GABF gold medal winning Pallet Jack IPA for Barley Brown's Brewpub in Baker City, Oregon. The IPAs that he is brewing right now are amazing.

Belching Beaver Dammed! DIPA. Good, but a tad sweet for my taste for an 8.8% ABV beer...not overly sweet though, would drink again.

Big local music festival today -- having folks over for a fire / drinking tonight. Smoking a huge pile of wings as we speak and have this lineup: Zombie Dust, Gumball Head, Oberon, Two-Hearted, Little Sumpin Extra. Pretty much 100% that the cellar will be raided also -- and its chillly here so I'm guessing a vintage or two of BCBS and BCBBW are gonna make appearances.

Big Ditch Citraburner (their house IPA with Citra)

Big Ditch Hazeburner (unfiltered version of their house IPA)

Frost Brewing Some IIPA

Almanac Dogpatch Sour - really good, starting to get my feet for sours.

Stone 19th Anniversary Thunderstruck - really nice DIPA

Have some more on the way on Monday for you Wing!

I was in Griffith Park today and stopped by Golden Road Brewery. Place has valet parking or a half mile walk. A one hour wait for a table. The hipster doofishness is off the charts. It felt like the place to be seen in LA if you're a hipster beer dork, which is more ridiculous than it sounds. It made me miss San Diego.

The flagship is Wolf Among Weeds. The hot current release is The Works. They're both very good. I had them in a flight with Heal the Bay and Point the Way. Took the first two home with me, growler of one, just canned four pack of the other. I won't be going back on a Saturday, sheesh.

Is there a morning thread?

Anyway, SN Torpedo at the moment (the absolute best value in the entire beer world, btw).

When it's time to set the cruise control for a long first football Sunday, I'm switching to Coors Banquet.

Unless I decide to head up to Hailstorm for a couple of growlers, going to be a Lizard King Sunday.

ETA: Thinking about beer at 8:30 in the morning is completely normal, right?

 Welsome to the addicting world of sours. Be prepared to spend disgusting amounts of money on rare and barrel aged versions. By next summer you'll be drinking as many sours as IPAs.

This weekend I had

Evil Twin Chocolate Pumpkin Porter. I really like this one. Sounds like an odd combo, but it really works.

Heavy Seas Siren Noire (imperial stout brewed w chocolate aged in bourbon barrel). This was really smooth and even had a hint of vanilla undertone.

I had a random selection of stuff while out watching MNF:

Dogfish Head Choc Lobster porter with lobster, cocoa powder, and basil tea (I didn't really get much lobster character outside of some slight brininess - it tasted like a slightly salted chocolate porter)

Big Sky Hound Dog imperial amber aged in whiskey barrels (my favorite beer of the night - great caramel, toffee, whiskey, and oak character)

Great Divide 21st Anniversary sour ale

Cigar City/Boulder Nothing Too Fancy pale ale

Stone Thunderstruck imperial IPA

Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale
