What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (2 Viewers)

Pretty sure I can't stand up anymore. Might need to sleep in a chair on the deck. Wife yelled at me for pissing off the deck a little bit ago LOL.
Awesome
Certainly didn't feel awesome this morning LOL. But back on the horse late afternoon after mowing -- keeping it mild with Founder's All Day as I grill some Polish and a foil packet of potatoes / onions / peppers with fresh herbs. Fire weather again tonight, too.

I've got a pretty incredible lineup of events for Great American Beer Festival (GABF) week in Denver. It is my favorite week of the entire year. Here is my current schedule for GABF week:

Sunday - Sour Sunday at Backcountry Pizza and Tap House

Monday - 18th Annual GABF Kickoff Party at Falling Rock Tap House

Wednesday - What the Funk!? beer festival featuring rare sour, wild, funky, and barrel-aged beers hosted by Crooked Stave

Thursday - Opening night session of GABF festival and Casey/Side Project tap takeover at Freshcraft

Friday - Denver Rare Beer Tasting festival followed by various tap takeovers including Crooked Stave's distribution clients (Jester King, Perennial, Almanac, Prairie, Breakside, Oakshire, Evil Twin, and more) at World of Beer as well as Revolution, Cigar City, Bell's, and more at Falling Rock

Saturday - GABF Members-only session (huge thanks to the Aristocrat for hooking me up with tickets! ) followed by tap takeovers of Casey at Falling Rock and Firestone Walker, Odell, and Surly at Freshcraft

Sunday - Hangover of epic proportions

I had some incredible sours at Sour Sunday at Backcountry Pizza and Tap House in Boulder yesterday. I was sharing 5 ounce half pours with a friend, so we were able to try a bunch of world class beers. Here is what I drank in a roughly ranked order of how much I enjoyed each beer (from best to worst -- although I would recommend every beer that had as they were all pretty fantastic):

Firestone Walker SLOambic blend of sour/wild ales with olallieberries aged in French oak barrels

Wicked Weed Medora sour/wild ale with raspberries and blackberries aged in red wine barrels

Firestone Walker Feral One blend of barrel-aged sour/wild ales

Sun King Cherry Busey oud bruin with Montmorency cherries aged in oak barrels

Lost Abbey Cuvee de Tomme sour/wild Belgian quad with cherries aged in bourbon barrels

Wicked Weed Bombadile sour/wild ale with strawberries aged in oak foeders

Russian River Supplication sour/wild brown ale with sour cherries aged in Pinot Noir barrels

Casey Brewing Oak Theory sour/wild ale aged in oak barrels

Bell's the Wild One sour/wild brown ale aged in oak barrels

Wicked Weed Pompeon sour red ale with pumpkins and charred ginger aged in rum barrels

Birrificio del Ducato Frambozchella spontaneously fermented sour/wild ale aged in Italian wine barrels with raspberries

New Holland Incorrigible Reserve Berliner weisse with Michigan blueberries and blackberries aged in oak barrels

Tilquin Gueze

Jester King Provenance Tangerine and Clementine sour/wild saison fermented with tangerines and clementines

Wicked Weed Succession sour/wild ale with Riesling grape must aged in Biltmore white wine barrels

Jester King Provenance Lemon and Lime sour/wild saison fermented with lemons and limes

The sours from Firestone Walker and Wicked Weed were all super impressive. I love both of those breweries so much. The only beer that I wasn't a big fan of was the Jester King Provenance Lemon and Lime, as the flavor profile was dominated by barnyard funk, musty horseblanket, and wet hay without much balance from the lemon and lime additions. I typically enjoy some barnyard funk character, but I don't think it should be the overwhelmingly dominant flavor of the beer. Interestingly, the Jester King Provenance Tangerine and Clementine didn't carry nearly as much barnyard funk, even though it uses the same wild saison base. I guess that is how the unpredicability of wild fermentation goes sometimes.

More delicious beers at GABF Kickoff Party at Falling Rock last night:

Odd13 Hawaiian Bartender dry-hopped sour ale with pineapple and mango

Comrade Superpower IPA

Horse and Dragon Scottish Tradesman coconut porter aged in rum barrels

Also at Freshcraft's Sour Monday:

New Belgium Love Felix sour ale aged in apple whiskey barrels

I'm currently on my lunch break in line at Crooked Stave to pick up a few bottles of two different variants of their Nightmare on Brett dark sour ale (which is probably my favorite Crooked Stave beer) -- one which is aged in apple whiskey barrels and the other in red wine barrels.

GABF life.

I land at 1:30 tomorrow. Can't freaking wait. Just as excited to see Denver for the first time as I am for GABF. Ok, almost as. Hoping to round up people to spit a cab downtown, but if I can't work that out it looks like the express bus is the way to go? Probably check in and try to get over to Crooked Stave or Falling Rock ASAP. Winging it...

Hell yeah! I'm excited for you. GABF week is such a great time in Denver.

Cabs from the airport downtown are pretty expensive (usually around $70) if you are not splitting the cost with others. You could call a Lyft/Uber from the airport, which would probably cost around $40 for a trip downtown. You could also ride the RTD SkyRide, which is only costs $11 to get downtown from the airport. Unfortunately, the light rail from the airport to downtown doesn't open until next year.

Here is a great list of beer events and tappings that are going on in Denver this week. I would definitely recommend going to either Crooked Stave or Hops and Pie when you get into town tomorrow. At 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, Crooked Stave is tapping a version of their Nightmare on Brett that is infused with cherries, which should be awesome. Earlier today, I had a Nightmare on Brett version aged in apple whiskey barrels and their Blackberry Dark Origins aged in whiskey barrels, which were both fantastic. Hops and Pie is also tapping a lot of great stuff tomorrow afternoon from Crooked Stave's distribution portfolio, including stuff from Crooked Stave, Jester King, Perennial, Fremont, Ale Apothecary, Melvin, Jackie O's, Westbrook, Boneyard, Cascade, and Societe. If you have never had any IPAs from Melvin Brewing from Jackson, WY, they are definitely worth seeking out. And Falling Rock should be tapping some amazing stuff later on Wednesday night, as they are tapping Shelton Bros. distribution stuff at 9:30 p.m. and Crooked Stave stuff at 10:30 p.m. They typically always tap some Cantillon whenever they do a Shelton Bros. tap takeover.

Let me know if you have any other questions about anything in Denver this week. Send me a PM if you want to grab a beer while you are in town.

Holy####ingdrool.

Tonight was supposed to be my one night off during GABF week, but it was hard to pass up a Crooked Stave distributing tap takeover at a burger bar near my office, especially since I skipped lunch today in favor of dropping $200 on rare Crooked Stave and Casey releases. It turned out to be another great night of beer drinking:

Creature Comforts Tropicalia IPA (really impressive IPA with lots of tropical fruit character - pineapple, mango, passion fruit, orange)

Fremont Bourbon Barrel Abominable (also delicious - tons of bourbon barrel character just the way I like it)

Cascade Blackberry Ale (really good with nice blackberry character, although not my favorite Cascade offering, as I didn't think its flavor was particularly complex - it probably would have been on the lower end of my sour rankings from Sour Sunday)

Here is the list of breweries for the What the Funk?! Festival tonight. The festival features all barrel-aged sour/wild ales and other rare barrel-aged beers. This beer list should be pretty insane.

Triple Digit Chickow. It's a Double Brown Nut Ale made by a small brewery here in town. It has an ABV 10% & is a great beer for the first day of fall.

Everything I had was fantastic, but I would have to say that my favorites of the night were the Casey cherry wild saisons, Wicked Weed Montmaretto, Rare Barrel Ensorcelled, Evil Twin Pappy's Imperial Biscotti Break, Crooked Stave Waelzblood, and Yazoo Cherry Deux Rouges.

I also stopped by Falling Rock after the festival and got my hop fix with a Russian River Pliny the Elder and a Comrade Hop Chops imperial IPA.

Epic night of drinking.

I was at Falling Rock for a bit last night too. I heard WTF was crazy crowded.
Yeah, it was really crowded at WTF and it got really hot in there. They definitely oversold the event for the size of the venue. I'm just glad that I had VIP tickets because I was able to hit all of the hottest spots before most people got in the building. Some of the best beers were already kicked by the time that the General Admission people got in. People are really #####ing about the event on BeerAdvocate forum, but I guess I tend to have a more postive outlook on things. I was able to get every beer that I really wanted (except for maybe one bottle of Cantillon), and the beers were phenomenal. I'd call that a good night.

Almanac Farmers Reserve Citrus - sour ale aged in wine barrels with Buddhas hand citron, blood orange and yuzu. Excellent sour!

Just hit up my favorite bottle shop at lunch for some Prairie wilds and sours -- Somewhere, Brett C., Eliza5beth, and 'Merica. Think I'll hit up Devil's Trumpet for a growler fill of Farmhouse Gypsy on the way home also. My Saison kick continues...

We did another seasonal beer exchange at work. Tonight's samplings:

Penn Brewery Penn Dark (Dunkel Munich Lager) - very good!

Evil Genius Trick or Treat (Pumpkin / Yam American Porter) - Not a big fan of pumpkin beers, but this was good.

Anchor Brewing BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red (American Amber) - my contribution, will buy again.

Almanac Farmers Reserve Citrus - sour ale aged in wine barrels with Buddhas hand citron, blood orange and yuzu. Excellent sour!
I have 9 Almanac sours in my fridge. They came in a package of 12, the other three non sours, and one I just opened - Norton the Emperor. This brewery is killing it.

Keeping it local tonight. Half Acre Gone Away and Vallejo....also keeping it light. 3am will come early....smoking a brisket tomorrow.

Opening night of GABF on Thursday night was great. The festival ran really smoothly and the logistics of entry were better than ever. I had the honor of being served Ocelot beers by Sebowski himself (who generously lent me his glass after I somehow misplaced my glass during a port-a-potty stop). I was really impressed with all of Ocelot's beers. The Two Lost Souls IPA was fantastic, as it featured two of my favorite hops -- citra and mosaic. Sebowski is bringing some serious west coast IPAs to the east coast. Here were some of my standout beers from GABF last night:

Beachwood BBQ Rye like an Eagle imperial brown rye ale aged in rye whiskey barrels

Brew Kettle Kitka Coconut Chocolate Stout

Cigar City Marshal Zhukov Russian imperial stout

Columbus Bodhi imperial IPA

Fat Heads Hop Juju imperial IPA

Firestone Walker Anniversary XVIII blended barrel-aged ale

Firestone Walker Feral One blended wild ale aged in oak barrels

Foothills Bourbon Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate imperial stout with cocoa nibs aged in bourbon barrels

Funky Buddha Morning Wood imperial Maple Bacon Coffee Porter aged in bourbon barrels

Goose Island Bourbon County Vanilla Rye imperial stout aged in rye whiskey barrels with vanilla beans

Great Divide Barrel-aged Yeti imperial stout aged in whiskey barrels

J Wakefield El Jefe Hefeweizen with coconut

Ocelot Two Lost Souls IPA with citra and mosaic hops

Russian River Beautification spontaneous wild ale aged in oak barrels

Societe the Pupil IPA

The Rare Barrel Becoming golden sour ale aged in oak barrels with boysenberries

The Rare Barrel Home, Sour Home golden sour aged in oak barrels with peaches, vanilla beans, and cinnamon

The Rare Barrel Ensorcelled dark sour aged in oak barrels with raspberries

Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with coffee

Weyerbacher D'Tango Unchained Belgian dark ale aged in bourbon barrels with cherries

I also went to a Casey and Side Project tapping at Freshcraft before the festival and had some insane beers:

Side Project Fencerow wild ale with black raspberries (one of my favorite sours that I've ever had, the black raspberry character was explosive on your palate)

Side Project Derivation Blend #1 imperial stout aged in maple bourbon barrels (ridiculous - an incredible blend of dark chocolate, bourbon, maple, and smoky charred oak that had tons of barrel character but drank remarkably smooth for its 15% ABV)

Casey Blackberry Fruit Stand (also amazing, Troy Casey is making some incredible sours out in Glenwood Springs)
