What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (6 Viewers)

I don't think I had a beer since Christmas until last night. No reason. Still drinking wine, tequila is always medicinal. But craving smooth malty beer last night I went with Scotch Ale. It was exactly what I wanted. So I want recommendations for more.

Screw bitter hops. Scotch Ales, Doppel Bocks, and I guess Barleywines are what I seek. I've always enjoyed Newcastle and Fat Tire was a staple for awhile, but I'm looking for more substance like the AleSmith Wee Heavy I had last night. I've gone on a chocolate stout binge in the past and want to avoi them too.

Watcha got? :banned:
Here are a few more:

Unibroue Trois Pistoles

Unibroue La Fin Du Monde

Tripel Karmeliet

Belzebuth Pur Malt - these were sold in like a 3 pack with maybe 12 oz. bottles. I think they were around %13 - %14. The name Pur Malt is a good description
Had this last week at the Libertine Bar. Very crisp. I don't know how I've not had it before. I'm going to add it into my rotation now.

where are you located?

Very few of the recommendations were available. I am loving the Delirum right now though. Belgian style or whatever, this is what I am craving. Thanks Jutz, a forgin' $10 pint. I got a six pack of EG suggested Old Chub. A 16.9 oz Primator Double Bock, a Firestone Abacus for too much money and a Maltopia Double Scotch Ale on sale for cheap. This should get me through the holiday just fine.

Headed to "An Evening of Fine Beer and Gentlemanry" at a buddy's house tomorrow night. (not gay)

Everyone is supposed to bring a beer or two to share. I picked up these three big bottles...

Unibroue Trois Pistoles

Unibroue La Fin Du Monde

Green Flash Tripel

I'll leave one at home but haven't decided which one yet. Probably one of the Unibroues just for the sake of variety.

But realistically, I suppose it will be whichever one I drink tonight. :banned:

Nice. Let me know how it's doing. It needed some time when I had it fresh. Was just thinking about cracking another one (have two left). Did you have the Ichabod yet? That was kicking ### when I had it a month ago.

You just opened up a whole world right there. You will not regret the Abacus. A fantastic, phenomenal, beer. I wish I had a pallet of it.

I gave the Ichabod a 3.9 at Ratebeer. Good stuff. Really drinkable for a sour.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on the 9000, I had one about a month ago I thought the taste changed, I felt the taste actually improved.

Currently picked up a mix:

Brooklyn Summer Ale

Victory Prima Pils (really good)

Magic Hat Wacko

Boulevard Single Wide IPA

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

Victory keeps on impressing me as does Brooklyn. Boulevard is new to the Chicago area though I had it in KC back when I visited. The Magic Hat is interesting.

For Chaos Commish asking about Scotch Ales - Three Floyds Robert the Bruce is pretty good.

The store down the street from me just started carrying Bear Republic, picked up a six of Racer 5 and a 4-pack of Hop Rod Rye. Both are seriously amazing brews
Have a 4 pack of Hop Rod and drinking one now. Pretty good. Was out earlier and had Founder's Red Rye on tap, so Hop Rod is at a bit of a disadvantage.

Pretty good, and definitely better than it was at release. I only got a 4-pack of it, drank 1 at release, 1 last night, and I still have two. I remember thinking it was disjointed and very black licorice-y - but now it tastes like a great combo of stout and barleywine...very sweet and silky chocolatey, but not too overly sweet. Very good.

$15 dollars for 22 oz would keep me from ordering a pallet but that was awesome cervesa. Drinking it at my sisters with lots of company yesterday, I felt like I had this wonderful secret nobody else could have because I sure wasn't sharing. The rest of my purchase didn't compare. Her boyfriend, a south african beer snob who loves Arrogant ******* (yuck) brought some Port Brewing Co. Old Viscosity for my wussy taste buds. No one drank it and my sis insisted I take it home. I'll probably try it for lunch.

Ate there on Saturday night and enjoyed:

Jolly Pumpkin Maracaibo Especial

Hanssens Ouede Gueuze

Mikeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel

Brasserie Dupont Saison

The Saison was probably my favorite. The JP was interesting- had a real barnyard smell to it and a well balanced sweet/sour bite. The head on the JP was the longest lasting I had ever seen. I was down to the last few sips and it still had a solid head.

 I am always surprised at how difficult it is to find malty beer. The whole hop craze caught on, and you can find IPAs everywhere. But finding a malty beer is difficult, especially in a bar.

I poured the Old Viscosity at 9:45 am. The joys of being self employed. This beer has my attention. I could do the pretentious descriptive thing about the long lingering head, the creamy roasted coffee bean, brown bread and caramel I am getting, or how a touch of honey mingles with a barely bitter aftertaste sort of drying my inner cheeks and making me want more, but I'll just spare you all that and say for the money, and for what I have been craving, this is the best so far, though it lacks the big malt bang I'm still seeking. Would I pick the Tremmens or Abacus over this? Yeah, but those are really pricey and this is nearly as yummy, different in good ways, and currently $3 a bottle at Whole Foods.

Its beer week in Milwaukee and I was at a cool event put on by Goose Island earlier this evening:

We welcome in Brian Loughrey from Goose Island to host a very special tasting for Milwaukee Beer Week. On Monday, May 2nd from 6-8pm, you will enjoy a flight of 5 different Goose Island Reserve Beers, finishing off with a sample of Bourbon County Stout - straight from the barrel itself!
They brought the Perre Jaques, Matilda, Sophie and Fleur. He also brought an oops version of the Matilda in which the brett went a bit crazy and produced a really cool super sour beer that they had to recall (if you ever see a 4/17 or 4/18 2010 Matilda, buy it). They used this "bad" batch of Matilda to make the Dominique last year by putting it it bourbon county casks for a few days to sweeten it up a bit. Of course, the bourbon county stout was the highlight the night. He cracked the cask open and handed out samples to the small crowd for an hour or so using a turkey baster. I think there was probably about 2-3 gallons total. The beer was uncarbonated and at room temp and probably about 20% abv I think. It had bits of oak and other floaters. I kept going back for more until it was gone - nectar of the gods.Tomorrow night I've got tickets to a tasting put on by a master brewer from New Belgium featuring their Lips of Faith line - really looking forward to that one.

Have a few to select from:

Tyranena Scurvy (IPA with orange peel)

Founders Double Trouble

Left Hand Brewing Stranger (american pale ale)

Pretty excited about all of them.

How did it go? Did they have Le Terrior? That is a super unique beer. Had some again last night. Its like chewing on hop pellets.

They did have Le Terrior - first time I've had that one and it was a great surprise. He started with Fat Tire and Ranger, which seemed really strange to me for a master brewer to come 1,000 miles and give us those. Finished strong with three greats - Terrior, La Folie and Abby Grand Cru.for me last night was a Mud Puppy Porter from Central Waters.

Thanks to those here who have recommended Racer 5. I found a six last night and really enjoyed it. That is a damn nice IPA. I still like 2 Hearted and Founder's Centennial better, but this will definitely be purchased again.

As for Victory's Hop Wallop, I was honestly disappointed. Hop Devil was good and Hop Wallop has such a beautiful color and poor, but I found myself wishing I had cracked open another Racer 5. Hopslam it is not.
