What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (5 Viewers)

#### Brewdogs, Gimmicky mother ####ers. Brew on a train? Under water? ZOMG! They put in like a drop of abalone tears! So crazy! Who gives a ####. #### off.

Yeah, Brewdogs just wasn't that appealing. Beer Geeks was better.
I've never seen Beer Geeks, but I find some of the ingredients and techniques Brew Dogs use fascinating. And its not like these guys are just some random homebrewers who got a show, they've made some serious and award winning beers at their brewery, including The End of History, the beer formerly known as the world's strongest beer at 55% ABV.The idea of the show isn't to make evey day beers, but to make crazy concoctions and to resurrect dead/extint/ancient beer styles in ways that either haven't been done, or haven't been done in a long time. That alone is enough to keep me watching and enjoying it.

Alpine has a tasting room? How far from SD proper?

Where else should I hit for great west coast IPAs? WIll be in SD for a few days in October.
Alpine is about 25 miles due East on the 8. I live at the end of the 8, so it is about 30mins door-to-door for me. They don't have a tasting room really. Just a restaurant and the brewery a couple doors down for growler and bottle sales. Their food is fantastic. Mostly BBQ. I can literally go on a nd on about their menu, so let me know if you are actually going to make and I will proceed. If not, you will have a hard time finding their beer locally. It has gotten better recently, but you can only guarantee some if you drive out. Your other shots at it depend entirely on timing. They are currently contract brewing one large batch a month of their regular beers at a larger facility, so sometimes that one beer is easy to find if the timing is right. When you are closer to coming out, let me know. I highly recommend you make it to Alpine if like IPAs and BBQ, but if you can't and I'm around, I can grab you some bottles when I'm out there and give them to you closer to town.

Non Alpine:

Oh man….

It wasn't too long ago I would just link someone to a google map I made and let the map and my notes speak for itself. But now there are over 90 breweries in San Diego. It is insane. Tell me what part of town you are in, what styles you like, and you transportation/free time and I will give you the best recommendations on beer and food I can. For what it is worth, let's say you have the same exact bar, food, and beer tastes as me, don't miss Alpine, Pizza Port OB, or Toronado. So many other options as well from bars to breweries.

This is the craft beer capital of the world. Hard to go wrong if you try. Let me know how I can help.
Awesome, thanks. I will have to find out where we are staying. It would be great to get those Nelson bottles if I can't get all the way out there.

Mostly I like citrusy IPAs/IIPAs, I've had a few of the Port beers (Mongo, hop15), which I like, but it seems like they do a number of other IPAs too.

Did you check out Sand Creek in Black River Falls? I've heard their taproom is worth visiting, but not been there myself.
Not sure if your travels will take you through Wisconsin Dells/Lake Delton, stop in Liquor Central, which is off the Highway 12 exit. Sounds likethey received some Oracle, Surly, as well as Toppling Goliath.
Was going to stop somewhere in that area on the way home and grab some alesmith since its not available in Chicago. Now I have more reasons to stop. I considered going to Lacrosse for toppling goliath but will just hit this place on the way home.
Ended up stopping here and at Viking Liquors in Lake Delton. Picked up the following:

4 4 packs of Scream IIPA.

1 Dorothy's

1 Alesmith Speedway Stout

3 Alesmith IPAs (can't get these in the Chicago area..any Alesmith for that matter although they are available in other parts of IL)

1 6 pack of Alaskan Icy Bay IPA (meh)

1 4 pack of Alaskan Hopothermia - haven't tried it yet

1 6 pack of Moon Man

1 6 pack of Ale Asylum Ballistic IPA

1 6 pack of Nebraska Brewing IPA - surprisingly decent

Missed PseudoSue by a day. Oh well, I have Zombie Dust in the fridge.

Then had a draft in NW Indiana so stopped in Munster on the way

Case of 12 bombers of Permanent Funeral

1 pack of Alpha King

Then picked up a Pipeworks Sam vs Unicorn imperial red ale here when out and about.

Hope the wife doesn't check the bank account while she's out of town because she's not going to be happy. Shared or gave away a lot of the above at the draft so I made a lot of friends but still have a pretty stocked fridge for Labor Day and opening day of football.

What is the verdict on DFH 120? I sampled one a few months ago on my way to a blackout and don't remember much. There is a shop 3.5 hrs away (SW mileage so not that far) with a supply, was thinking about making a road trip. Is it worth the effort?

It's very good, but not worth the premium over the 90 IMO. If I'm buying a DFH beer in that price range, I'll get Worldwide Stout or Palo Santo Marron.

Just got back from Colorado. Toured the New Belgium brewery and had my share of tasty beverages. Favorites were:

Odell Brewing "St. Lupulin" - hoppy pale ale

Odell Brewing "Looseleaf" - session ale

Ska "Modus Hoperandi IPA" - IPA..very good

New Belgium "Trippel" - Belgian style ale

New Belgium "1554" - dark beer

Equinox "Hail Damage Imperial Amber" - 9.25% ABV...it'll get ya there.

Pateros "Rustic Red" - really solid iresh red

I would certainly not drive 3.5 hours for DFH 120. It's a good beer, maybe even a great beer, but it's not 3.5-hour-drive good.

Agreed. I wouldn't drive 20 minutes for it. It is one of my least favorite DFH beers.

There is zero to compare 120 with 90. They are galaxies apart. Just same brewery and similar name. 120 is a super hoppy barley wine. It isn't an IPA.

I ####### love it fresh on draft. Tastes like over ripe fermenting grapefruits. Just really unique and tasty for me. I do not like it nearly as much out of the bottle. I've resigned myself to only aging bottles. They are a different beast with a few years on them. Very good.

damn, you've got some work to do

Sixtel of Ponto for my draft and a growler of Nelson plus numerous penalty shots of shots.

Beer It Forward Update!
Ilove should be getting my Alpine box this week. It is a 3 bottle shipper. Here is how we'll decide who gets it next.

We're going to tie it back to fantasy football. I just did my local league draft. First one who guesses my first round pick will get Ilove's box. I am picked 4th. No points for catching balls. 1/2 point per first down. QB, RB, RB/WR, WR, WR, WR/TE, TE. D, K.

Tracking says it will arrive Wednesday. I am not totally finalized on what I will be shipping out and am willing to somewhat customize to the person that wins. If you don't have (or have limited) access to Bells, Founders, Shorts, Dark Horse, and other Michigan breweries, I can hook you up. Even if you do have regular access, I can get some limited release beers that may not have made it to your local stores. The only catch is, I get to make the rules for determining the next winner and you have to agree to send that person 3 great beers and start the next contest.

Drinking a pint of Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout w/a shot of raspberry syrup in it...a PB&J they call it...at Rapp Brewing.

Holy crap this is awesome.

8.2% ABV

I recently got a bottle of Avery's 5 Monks bourbon-barrel aged Belgian-style "quintupel" that I think I am going to drink tonight. It clocks in at a massive 19.4% ABV, which led them to call it a "quintupel" rather than a quad. It should be an interesting experience of a beer.

Can't wait to try this, curious to your thoughts.

still Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale. It's been my beer of choice for the better part of a year now but I noticed today they have Little Sumpin' Extra Ale. That bumps it up to 8.5% alcohol, though. No can do.

The Alpine has arrived, can't wait to try some this weekend. Thanks Sebowski!
Nice!

Drink the Nelson last. If you like (and some don't. Crazies…) it will set a new bar and the beers that follow won't have a chance. If you want to do all three in one night go: Duet, Pure Hop, Nelson.

And no one has won the next round yet. I thought picking 4th someone would get in in 5 picks or less. What's a matter with you people! You don't like beer!?

Its a good sour but I'm not blown away...its getting better as it warms a bit though.

Saving the WW Oblivion for another night.

Eta: broke out some Bleu Cheese to try with the Genesis, and they go really well together. I'm liking this beer a lot more with the cheese.

Been drinking Dos Equis lately because a couple cases were left at my house and I've been too lazy to go to the store. I thought I hated Mexican beer but after 6 or so you kind of get used to the taste, or lack of. Anyone else ever take a break from the good beers and drink piss beer for a night or week?
