Stopped into Community Beer Works for a growler fill last night, looking for a fill of The IPA, one of my favorite beers of all-time. In talking with the brewer who was pouring, and after reading their weekly blog, he confirmed that this was indeed likely the LAST BATCH ever of The IPA. The beer that finished #2 in a national competition two years ago and beat some of the big boys head-to-head might be dead forever.
The IPA is mostly a mix of Galaxy and Simcoe hops, and they've finally been hit by the Galaxy shortage. All orders for the hop are contracted and filled through at least 2018. He claims that the majority of the purchasing has been from InBev, who are throwing insane amounts of money into the market to - his words - hamstring the craft brewers. InBev, and some of the other larger players as well, have bid up the price of Galaxy to where smaller brewers can't afford it. And the hop growers don't want to expand production and cut into their prices now that they have a stranglehold on the market. He was pretty fired up about it. He also predicted that we're going to be seeing a lot fewer Galaxy beers among the smaller players in the market. Sam Adams and some of the bigger "craft" guys can handle it, but breweries like Community Beer Works (5-barrel [i think], on tap only, local distribution only, no cans/bottles) can't.
Bottom line is that they don't know if/when they will ever get another shipment of Galaxy. And that's a damn shame, because this beer is one of the best beers I've ever had. Period, full stop.
So I have a final growler for consumption today, released yesterday for the maybe the last time. RIP.
