Why did Backstrom and Battle Creek get cancelled? (1 Viewer)

I thought both shows were decent. It doesn't sound like they gave them much of a chance. It seems like networks are quick on the hook more than they used to. You also have shows that choose to end after a set number of years, even if the show is still popular. That happens more than it used to as well. Why did Deadwood end when it did? Why did Justified end so soon? I know some shows end because actors choose to end it and that is shame in some cases. Of course there are shows that drag on longer than they should too, such as Grey's Anatomy (I hate that show) or Law and Order SVU.

I'm you, the fourth rated TV network. I have a show that was getting decent ratings and was different than other shows on TV. Instead of giving the show a second season to see if it could build viewers, I cancel it and renew the low rated 'Bones' for its 11th season. Then I wonder why I'm the fourth rated TV network.

Can't speak on behalf of Battle creek as I never watched it..

But Backstorm didn't break any new ground.. It was basically House but with a detective rather then a doctor.

It was a decent show to watch, and I did watch almost every episode.. But it was never going to hit my "Must see" watch list Like Blacklist, Persons of Interest, Turn, Vikings...

That was a great response. I like that guy.

Backstrom got canned because it went from almost eight million for the pilot to 2.8 million in the finale. Bones is still over four million per episode in its tenth season.

Never watched either but the commercials for Backstrom were terrible. It looked like one of the dumbest sitcoms ever. And sitcoms in general are bad.

I tried to watch Backstrom 3 or 4 times. The dialog was so cringeworthy that I couldn't watch more than 5 minutes before having to change the channel. Some of the worst writing I've ever seen. I really wanted to like it because I like Rainn Wilson.

I really enjoyed Backstrom. I thought Rain Wilson was great in the role and I liked the rest of the cast, especially the ginger chick.

Oh well, one less show to DVR every week next season I suppose.

It wasn't a sitcom, it was a detective show.

I liked it. I didn't care for his brother all that much and the story line about his drinking took a turn for the worse when he went to AA. They should have just kept him the way he was.

I sort of enjoyed Battle Creek. It had likable actors - The dude from Oz, Fergie's husband, Kumar, couple of hot chicks, Dewey Crowe. I could have kept watching that.

I really enjoyed Battle Creek...gonna miss that one.

But the syrup syndicate episode may have killed it.

If you've ever wondered what CSTU is like IRL picture Backstrom married without the drinking problem.

Man, if tonight's episode of Battle Creek had been earlier/the first it might have picked up more viewers.

I liked Battle Creek. I actually think having Vince Gilligan's name on it hurt it. People wanted something like Breaking Bad, and it was nothing like it. But it wasn't supposed to be. It was meant to be a fun cop show. Nothing ground breaking, but enjoyable to watch. And I thought it did a good job with that. What really hurt it was the fact that CBS had sports on prior to the first 4 or 5 episodes and it kept getting bumped back in time. I had it set to record on the DVR and each one of those weeks I ended up getting the show before it and missing the entire episode because it was on an hour later.

Yeah, Backstrom was just terrible.

Not sure I would say terrible, but they had this weird way of speaking that just was disjointed in my view. Watchable at best but that was that.

I agree that networks are too quick to give shows the hook, but I disagree on Backstrom. I was excited for that show, but couldn't make it through 30 minutes.

And while I like the spunk of them going to twitter and attacking the network, I think it's hilarious to insinuate that they were "different than other shows on tv". It was a crime show with a very slight twist. I'd argue that Bones is more unique, in the crime show genre, than Backstrom was.

And house was basically sherlock Holmes as a doctor. So in essence it was a detective pretending to be a doctor who was pretending to be a detective.
