Why do we keep putting up with the South? (1 Viewer)

No other parameters. No specific definition of what is south and what is north. Just..... search. And enjoy.
I see a lot of the girls that were hot southern girls on the northern page. Don't try to lay claim to our women folk.
Oh so now northern powerhouse Google is to blame. Of course.
Is Stanford in the north now?
I live a mile away from Google in Mtn View, Calif.. Didn't realize we were acquired by New York.
We need to settle this. Do you guys want to draw an arbitrary dividing line across the country? Or are we dividing along civil war lines? Silly to debate until we know who is on which team.

The strength of the south isn't in her urban cities... don't think the south will win stacking them up side by side. I can't say its in the countryside either; I'd take Adirondacks,VT, and NH over the Appalachians.

South climate is Munich better, I don't think there is any debate here.

Culturally, its different. I'm not one to say NY cusine, for example, is better than Carolina or Louisiana, that's a matter of taste, imho. I suppose NY has more arts (theatre, for example) if that's what you are in to, and certainly better schools, although the south is not devoid of upper-calibre universities.

If money wasn't an issue, I'd rather live in the north, personally. As it is, I'm happy with how far my dollar stretches in Charlotte. I like my 20 min commute, my big house, and proximity to friends and family. I like being 2 hours from mountains, 3 hours from the beach, and a simple 4-5 hours from Florida.
I don't disagree with any of this, except that I think the weather in the north is great. Yes, colder winters and more snow, but snow around Christmas is kind of awesome, and we aren't in sweltering humidity for so much of the year. Give me a place like Maine. Gorgeous.
I've spent plenty of time in places like Wyoming, Rochester, NY, Syracuse, etc. I understand winters in the north. The way I like to think of it is like this: the first snow of the year is great...the snow is clean, the airport has that crispness, its exiting. The last snow sucks - you are tired of shoveling, the snow is dirty, you are depressed from looking at clouds, in general it sucks. In Charlotte, we get one snow storm a year... the snow never gets to the sucky stage.
Yeah but June-August must be hell on earth.
Summers suck in NYC too. Used to sweat through my shirt commuting to work on the train. Don't pretend like you're California. There are lots of things that make NYC awesome. Weather is not one of them.
Weather this week and last is awful. Subway makes me want to jump on the tracks.

Real fast - if the South is the area with the terrible summer weather, why are Northerners the ones who perish during heat waves every year? Because every summer I hear about a bunch of people in the Northeast who unfortunately expire during a heat wave.
I seem to remember 3 college kids dying in a heatwave in Mississippi back in 1964.

Wait, it might not have been a heatwave.

Forecast for the balance of this week - hotter in New York City with equivalent humidity as compared to Charlotte.
and Charlotte won't crap it's pants in a rain storm....snow?? That's a different story, but it doesn't happen all that often down here.
Let's be honest now, You spit on the road in Charlotte and there are 200 accidents in an hour.
If it's cold out

What adjustements do you want to make?

That's not really helpful. I see the South -- which part is the North?

Here's one civil war era map. Doesn't have to be ***official***, but there are a few shown like it on the web.

Let's pick teams before we figure out who wins. Because I concede, if we only get New York and you guys get the entire rest of the country, life here is miserable, we don't stand a chance. That said, if you're stuck rolling out Atlanta and Houston in your starting lineups.... esh....

Holy sheet, you are crazy. Nothing gorgeous about Maine in the winter. Sub zero, parking bans, ice, snow drifts over your car, everything is grey/dingy brown. Used to live there, you can freaking have it. Get the snowblower tuned up for 100" of snow and more snow into April. Sucka.

You could combine Northeast with Midwest in my link to be North and leave South as the South.

It was earlier suggested to keep it East of the Mississippi, but I don't think you're going to get the South to agree to exclude Texas. Let's use your link and do Blue vs Red and split up the Yellows. Missouri goes to the North and Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, DC go to the South. Since the South is going out to Texas, I'd say the North can claim Nebraska and the Dakotas if they want. And the South can also get Oklahoma.

There you have it.

Otis. . Slow down. You're going to have a heart attack proving you're better than the guys in the south who don't get Northeast stress.
I don't know, stress down here is pretty bad. On my 15 minute commute today I had to slow down to almost 20 miles an hour so I didn't hit the family of ducks crossing the street in front of the drive through daiquiri shop.
Greatest invention ever. My life changed the first time I went to one.

I'm a big fan of the NE cities. Love NYC and Boston, and Philly is much better than it gets credit for. Portland, ME, is great. Pittsburgh even has nice downtown now. Urbanism is done much better in the North and I really enjoy just walking around cities. I also like to vacation up North in places like Cape Cod and Bar Harbor.

But, I've lived my whole life in the DC area and my parents have Southern roots in Tennessee and Florida. So I feel like Robert E. Lee here in that I'll fight for the South even though I really feel like I gravitate towards things of the North (except for the Winter).

I thought this was the North v. the South, not north v. south.
Right?

Can we get someone who knows wtf they are talking about to pick the teams?
North

ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MN, IA, MO, KS

South

DE, MD, DC, VA, WV, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, TN, KY, AR, LA, TX

Go.

Like I said before, the North has to take Kansas as well.

Looks like the Northeast has been physically removed from the continent. No adjustments needed.

real southerners don't consider Delaware or Maryland part of The South. Hell I've seen people argue about Virginia, even.

It kinda depends on the criteria used to judge "better" no? For example, CLT is stuck between the 2nd/3rd largest banking city in the country. Given the financial boost that it provides without all the traffic and people, some would consider that a "win" for Charlotte. I do tend to agree with the issues that ATL brings, regardless of the criteria though. They are certainly a "please stop helping" sort of city IMO.

Ok...so lines are "drawn"...now what are the criteria for "better"? Need some guidelines
Weather, cuisines, musical styles, these all come to mind. FWIW, I grew up near Detroit, but my family's roots are in VA, WV, KY, and TN, as well as some Cherokee ancestry.

Weather - South

Education - North

Jobs - North

Food - South

Arts and Fine Culture - North

Music - South

Economic Output - North

I feel like when you are productive (ie young-middle age) the North is better. Better to raise a family, get a job etc. But as you retire, all the arrows point to the South.

About a year ago, I was looking for a change in jobs. Found that pay was higher in the south when compared to cost of living. Not sure "jobs" is all that clear. Then I question the "education" one as well. If we're talking about private institutions of higher learning, I'd concede. However, if we're talking about public institutions of higher learning, it's probably the south (or push at worst). If we're talking about K-12, it's definitely the north.

And speaking of Maryland what the heck is up with that weird western notch that is like a couple miles wide stuck between PA, VA & WVA?

What goes on there?

How communities treat each other, community violence, pace of life, ability to look strangers in the eye on the street come to mind as well.

Where is the majority of high-paying jobs? Not just your experience. NY/Chi beat any cities in the South for number of jobs.
If it costs twice as much to live there getting paid twice as much isn't all that impressive.

Well, for example, my exact same job in the exact same company living in NY pays 10% more in NYC, however, cost of living was 20-25% higher in NYC. For me, that translates to a net cut in money for me. Sheer volume of jobs, you're absolutely correct. Not sure how meaningful that is though.

Nine are in the South. One is in the Northeast/Midwest

Same here. In my industry the difference is about 10% in pay. I turned down a job in NYC partly because of that.
