Why soccer will never be big in the USA....... (1 Viewer)

I wanted to take my kids to a Sporting KC match a couple weeks ago, but I could only get standing room tickets for less than $50/pop. KC seems to be supporting the team pretty well.

I just bought tickets for Sounders/Fire this weekend that were at center field, 2nd row for $40 each.

Stupid Fire never should have moved the team out to the burbs.

The only reason anyone goes to see a baseball game anymore is because there's plenty of time to sit there on their phones scrolling Facebook and Twitter.
I love going to baseball games because I can take my kids and its really no problem if I miss several innings entertaining them, walking around and having fun at the park. I'll never watch a baseball game on television, but I'll often have a game on the radio as background when I'm doing other things - driving, grilling, working in the garage. Soccer is the opposite - I need complete focus on the game. I've already declined invites to World Cup parties or gatherings at bars because I can't stand any distractions when the ball is in play.

Baseball is the only sport where the announcers need at least 20 prepared anecdotes to make it through a game.

I think certainly the older generation, say 55 and above obviously like baseball more, to an enormous percentage, 90% or more.

But it is pretty obvious (to the point that you have to have you head stuck in the sand to not realize it) that when you start looking at the younger people in the country the balance changes dramatically especially once you factor in the massive hispanic population that is under 25 years old in the country.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread. KC plays to SRO crowds almost every home game. Fantastic turn around down there. I still remember when there would be barely 5k rattling around Arrowhead.

The answer to this question is very simple:

We currently have 4 existing team sports that are much more entertaining. There is always at least one running at any given time, and for the majority of the year, more than one is going.
You're telling me, with a straight face, that baseball is more exciting than soccer? Seriously? You seriously just said that???
Yes
Well, I think we have our answer right there. Something in your brain is broken.
I'd say well over 90% of Americans would much rather go to a baseball game than a soccer game.

90% is generous for soccer too, as the real number is prob closer to 98%.

I don't know how not liking soccer over baseball makes my brain broken? Sounds odd.
Closer to 50/50
This is the delusional .
Ok lets do a survey here on FFA. You say 98% of people would choose baseball over soccer. If the number who choose baseball is less than 95%, you don't post for a year, if 95 or greater, I don't post for a year.

Is it a deal? If you say yes, I will set up the poll.

Problem with losers to such bets is that the results are often tainted by people wanting x poster to take a vacation.

I am willing to risk it.

This should be a slam dunk easy yes for him, I even gave him 3 extra points and did not hold him to his 98% prediction.

He could also opt out of the bet and just never post about soccer again. That would achieve the same purpose.

But lets see what he says.

how do you even qualify that though?

rather go to "a soccer game" vs "a baseball game"?

what if it's like the World Cup final vs a low-level tee ball game down at the neighborhood park?

With a 98% number it really should not matter but maybe just a generic question like this

Which would you rather see (in person or on TV) a pro game of:

Baseball:

Soccer:

=============================

I personally think 98% is high but I am willing to take the bet to see if I am wrong. Hopefully he will too.

Yankees/Red Sox

LA Galaxy/Barcelona
If you use Yankees/Red Sox, it would be more akin to US/Mexico or Barca/Real Madrid imo.

But we should not bring specific teams into the picture. He was very clear in stating 98% would choose baseball over soccer. The question does not need to be that specific with numbers that high.

Agree, figured I'd put LA in there so it's not 100% for soccer ;)

You can't get 98% of people to agree that water is wet. This is a slam dunk for you Andy.
If he had said 75% I would not have said a word but saying numbers like 98% deserves a questioning imo.

As I said I would be just as willing to not do the poll if he promises never to post in a soccer topic again. I don't really care either way.

We can use two examples to help people in the poll

World Cup vs World Series

Yanks/Red Sox vs Barca/Real Madrid

kc has done a lot to make soccer happen here.. when it was the Wizards and we were in Arrowhead no one gave a crap.

But they built an amazing new stadium in the right part of town (read: where white people go and live) and they also have a good team to boot.

It's a good atmosphere out there. i've been to 3 games and I've enjoyed them.... except that 2 of the 3 were ties... so it was like I went and nothing actually happened.

the 3rd game was in a downpour of rain so bad that I found myself wishing it was baseball and that they would delay it or move it to the next day

This is the delusional - To back this up go check out the cost of tickets... Mets (& I use the ####tiest local franchise bc using any other makes this argument that much more laughable) front row seats are around $500, and nobody in NY gives a #### about the Mets (Yankees Legends Seats are nothing less than $1,000 and those aren't even close to the best ones). I can get front row center field Red Bull tickets for 80-90% cheaper. They play less games in a much smaller stadium which should make the price disparity in favor of soccer... If 50/50 was even the slightest bit close, these costs wouldn't be so far apart.
It's closer to 50/50 that 99% and that's MLS. If you had a match here with Real Madrid v. Manchester United, it'd be 98% in favour of soccer over baseball.
In Southern Florida, probably. In pretty much every other area of the country people would wonder if the fake Madrid team was coming next week.

South Florida has a decent soccer following but lags well behind Texas, California, the Pacific Northwest (good god is the sport huge up there) and the North East corridor.

If 95% is the number you think is fair to use, you are already conceding my point.

If the USA really wanted to it could win a World Cup in the next 12 years. That said it would need to be a country wide effort and someone would have to put hundreds of millions into it. You can tell me how great the rest of the word is till your blue in the face. But if Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, AJ green, Lebron James, Etc Etc of all the truly great US athletes and athletes to come took ten years and dove head first into winning a World Cup I'm sure we could do it.

The best player in the world is 5'5 and about 95 pounds, how could all those big/fast guys not be the best in the world?
Do you mean if we took those guys now and trained them or do you mean if they started playing soccer at 4 years old?
If we are talking American athletes past and present that would have made amazing soccer players, the list begins and ends with Barry Sanders. He would have been the next Maradona.

I think the 95% number is foolish, but I am willing to test it, are you?Are you willing to stand up for what you stated and take the bet?

Hell, if you really believed what you said lets use the 98% number and make it a life time ban.

You have two choices

A) accept the bet

B) admit your were severely exaggerating and we will drop it

You came up with the 90-98%, not him.

I guess math isn't your thing... But I'll happily lay 2-1 on a financial wager at 50/50. Name your price. Public pollETA: he came up with the wager
Wow what a fraud you are.

First you claim strongly a 98% number then you back off and try to change it all over. You are pathetic.

Sorry you guys love some fairy sport with a group of foot fairies that would get beaten up by a mediocre high school football team.

If we are talking American athletes past and present that would have made amazing soccer players, the list begins and ends with Barry Sanders. He would have been the next Maradona.
The size, the balance, the speed, the quickness, he had all the perfect tools.

Of course it is impossible to gauge whether he would have had the foot skills.

The best Italian player of his generation looks like he could run a 40 in barely 12 seconds so skill can supersede physical gifts.

Notebook:

Fantasycurse42 is the biggest fraud in the FFA.

He makes foolish claims and then acts like a scared little girl when asked to back them up with the simplest of bets.

Embarrassing.

I never thought I would see anyone sink below LHucks but congrats, you actually found the bottom of the barrel.

Bottom line:

Americans don't give a #### about soccer... The World Cup draws marginal interest every 4 years from the United States and that is all... I'm done talking soccer, it's just terrible... Enjoy your 90 minutes of 1-0 action

Notebook:

I did not make the claim, you did. Hell I even clearly stated had you said 75% I would not have said anything.

Why won't you stand up to your own words of the 98%?

What are you so scared about if you believe what you said?

Why not be just a man and say you were obviously exaggerating instead of digging deeper into the barrel?

Could it be that you were completely talking out of your butt and you got caught and now look like an idiot and have no way to fix how foolish you look to everyone reading the thread?

I will not respond to your trolling any more unless you accept the simple bet I outlined BASED ON YOUR CLAIMS.

Take any odds he gives you. Enough people will want to never hear from this guy again to vote the right way. He makes me miss Lhucks.
