Why soccer will never be big in the USA....... (1 Viewer)

Make the net bigger for normal play and smaller for penalty kicks.   :bowtie:
Dynamic goal sizing would be even better. As teams build a lead, their goal could shrink while the losing team's goal gets bigger. Would encourage more scoring and ensure that games were always close.

When I first "joined" this thread, there was one who always supported my anti-cracker/Anglo takes.... plus , I think we're tight with limited Linoleum .....MFkgn Bolivians!

Doug B is drawing me off topic, but controlling the ball > 50% has absolutely no correlation to winning soccer games.  You don't get a correlation until you're at 65% or so.
Going to need to re-calibrate.

Liverpool had 81% of possession and 26 shots - but only tested Clarets keeper Tom Heaton with shots from distance.

Thanks, Jurgen!

Another thing they have wrong in US sports. Nothing wrong with a hard-fought game between two teams of equal caliber ending in a tie.
I hate ties but have grown to accept them in soccer....but will let say for the anti soccer crowd I understand how ties are terrible for a sport.  Not necessarily the end result  being a tie but in that many teams are content with a tie leading to a 1 sided crap show of a match that makes for terrible viewing.

Then win.  3 on 3 followed by a shootout is not winning.  Overtime sucks.
I agree. The problem with regular season games is they have to end on a fairly tight schedule and we know hockey (and soccer if they let it) can go on for hours. NHL gets it right for playoffs. As least 3v3 is still the same game. Shootouts are just a ####ty skills contest.

I don't feel the hype that I felt 4 years ago.  I can only speak for my direct friends/co-workers/neighborhood but no one seems to give a crap about it.

I'm out at the bars and the only people I see caring about the games are the kitchen staff.

Never thought I'd say this but...you need new friends

Was wondering about this, with the US not being in it, would the casual/non soccer fan be interested the way they have been (and growing) over last several WCs. The bars in my NYC hood were packed yesterday with people watching...but no idea about during the week. They showed Portugal v Spain in Times Square, but don't know how well it was attended.

Its hard to look at these ratings lists and compare numbers with so many people ditching cable year to year.

From that article:

"Since the 2014 World Cup, Nielsen has adjusted its methodology to account for streaming viewers, an attempt to better capture the entire audience as digital and mobile options become more popular."

You're hanging out with the wrong people.

The only reason I can watch these games is because I’m a telecommuter. Otherwise, I’d have to catch recaps in the evenings.

I’ve been watching them in the evenings on YouTube TV. Just have to avoid the scores during the day.

I've been DVRing the games and watching at night.  Pick the 2 best games of the day and watch them after work.  No halftimes or delays, it's not bad at all.  The hardest part is avoiding Twitter spoilers and score updates if I'm listening to sports talk when driving.

One thing I always notice and maybe I’m off base with this but it seems like the WC and soccer in general is much bigger with women outside the US.  Maybe it’s a generational thing but my wife has zero interest in the WC but she’ll watch the Olympics even though she doesn’t follow any of those sports.  The stadium and live shots from other countries always have a lot of women.

Soccer has been steadily gaining momentum in this country for decades with no signs of slowing down...MLS continues to gain popularity and fans, not to mention soccer is increasingly becoming the most popular youth sport.

You old farts will go to your graves missing the boat...and nobody will care.  Time to go tend to your lawn.
