Why soccer will never be big in the USA....... (2 Viewers)

Is the fundamental reason that us mnt is not more competitive the fact our best athletes play basketball and football (and maybe other sports)?

or do we not have a good enough infrastructure to nurture the best players that we do have?

or something else?

I think that's pretty obvious. Soccer just broke into the top 5 of youth sports. Hard to develop players if they are playing other sports.

. Somebody explain this offsides to me. Where's the Blue Line? Do they actually penalize a team for being quicker?
There needs to be either the ball or 2 defenders between the attacking player and the goal line at the time the ball is struck. Offsides is called when the offending player touches the ball or influences the play.

That is not the fundamental reason.

The US has 100 X more youth playing than Iceland, yet Iceland is more successful.  Same is true for a slew of other countries in the current World Cup.

We have 300MM people. Belgium has 11MM people. We can afford not to have our best athletes playing to be competitive.

Not to nitpick, but it's not like Iceland are historically more successful than the US.  Every country goes through up/down cycles.  I would agree that they are as good as, if not better than, the US is currently, but just a few years ago they were consistently ranked over 100 in the FIFA rankings.  Your point is valid in that the US has a much larger youth player base than many of these countries.

The whole clock thing annoys me. As a spectator I should know how much time is left in the game.
On the one hand, I enjoy that the referee allows an attack to progress if it's nearing the end. But if I was a defender the arbitrariness of it would drive me nuts.

sure, I used Iceland as an example because of its exaggerated player pool difference.

A better example is Uruguay.

Soccer has been steadily gaining momentum in this country for decades with no signs of slowing down...MLS continues to gain popularity and fans, not to mention soccer is increasingly becoming the most popular youth sport.

You old farts will go to your graves missing the boat...and nobody will care.  Time to go tend to your lawn.
Is it ok to not give a rip about it and yet let you have your fun? Is that possible in 2018?

So what is the reason?  I’m sure this is well-worn territory, but I am thinking about  it now.
Start with love of the game. You work harder at and have a greater interest in something you love. Love is learned. I have a good friend who doesn't care about soccer. But both of his sons played soccer through HS. It was the only sport they played in HS. Now that their playing days are over they are more interested in watching football, basketball, and baseball because those are the sports they grew up with on the TV at home and going to the games with their old man. It will take some time before the Chicago Fire supplants the Bears, Bulls, Cubs, Sox, and Hawks in Chicago sports' lore no matter how many kids are kicking soccer balls around the parks here.

I knew that flopping is comical in soccer, but now I'm noticing that even goalies flop to make their saves look more dramatic. : lmao:

I made the switch to the beautiful game and spent a couple years trying to convince family and friends, all of whom acted as if I’d joined a cult.

Ive since given that up and just enjoyed the game.

Sure, but soccer fans don't go into the shark pool and talk about how sucky the NFL is.

Every World Cup, us soccer fans have to deal with the same asinine questions and comments.   How ####ty diving is, our best athletes don't play soccer, blah blah blah.

There are plenty of people who post about how horrible football is now

Congrats? Did you want me to scour the entire internet for every single article? You asked for a link i gave you the first one that came up. I'm not trying to win some dumb internet argument. I couldn't care less what the most popular youth sport is.

I don't care whether people like the sport or not.

I find it a touch strange that some of those people are so insecure in their hatred that they have to post constantly about it, almost as if hoping they can some how stem the tide of the rising popularity of the sport.  But in the end, it is a message board and people are going to post their opinions no matter what.

What, for the life of me, I will never ever understand are the people who don't like the sport, still watch it and then complain.  We have a billion entertainment choices today.  Why in gods name are you watching something you don't like?

I would never waste my time watching a baseball game and I certainly would never waste even more time telling people who like the sport how bad it is.  It just makes no sense to me.

The World Cup, like the Olympics, is pervasive.  You can go into a day with the intent to avoid it and still be confronted with it.  Pretty much any city across the globe.   You don't get that with a baseball game.  So if people want to get a rant in and complain about it, it's fair game IMO.

Good thing that flopping would never trickle into our beloved NFL football.  Oh wait..
I'm a fan of soccer - not nearly as much as a lot of you guys in here, but I enjoy watching and am loving this World Cup so far. But I think you guys defending it are better off just acknowledging that flopping and feigning injurt is just a part of the game that you get used to rather than the "it happens in football and basketball, too" argument. I mean, the sheer volume is worlds apart. The NFL and NBA videos linked earlier were highlights from a season or even across seasons, and a similar video could be made from a single soccer match (or even a half).

Anyway, I guess I'm not saying anything new, and I realize it's probably just a fun way to respond to the usual complaints.

Gaining momentum for "decades"?

Why isn't it popular yet then?

Does it annoy you enough to give up those 30 seconds of wonder/anticipation for constant stoppage of an arbitrary clock and a bunch of down time and comercials?

I like watching soccer but hate when non British people suddenly speak British English when talking about it. Side instead of team, match instead of game, come on...

The worst is how city or country names suddenly become plural. “Belgium are going to win the World Cup.” Sorry but that is just wrong.

It actually only takes like 15 seconds. :)
