Weight classes are there because there is an assumption that the competitors has similar skill sets.
I think it has more to do with heavier opponents having an advantage
No way
Way. It's why there are 14 different weight classes. Because even a small weight differential is a huge advantage/disadvantage. Let me know if you have any questions.
You serious?

In grappling tournaments, there are weight classes and divisions based on skill. If you happen to win your bracket, you move on to the absolute division. In absolute, there are no more weight classes or divisions - it's all one big bracket. Light weights will compete directly with heavy weights. Winner of the absolute division usually walks home with $500 or something.

So, there is a well-established practice within the combat sports world competing outside of weight classes.

I voted "beat the living crap out of me" then I googled her size, 5'7" 135lbs. I thought she was bigger/taller... I may be able to last a round with her until I am gassed and she gets me in some submission.
Can't believe only 20 of us think we could beat her. I got her by 6.5 inches and 140 pounds. I'd destroy her.If we were equal sized she would chew me up and spit me out. She's a great fighter.
What is your plan when you get in the ring with her? She certainly isn't going to be afraid, so intimidation isn't a factor.

Are you going to do a running belly flop on top of her and hope you crush her with your obese body?

She could literally just run around and escape all your feeble attempts for like 90 seconds and you would be so gassed that she wouldn't even have to do anything and you would keel over.

Most of the time heavies win... not every time just most of the time.

In the early days of the UFC when there were no weight classes, the heaviest fighters had no advantage over the lighter fighters.

You would see all shapes and sizes win over all other shape and sizes.

As many know Royce Gracie was one of the big names in the early days of MMA, beating opponents much bigger than him.

This was not by accident.

The Gracies were a big family with many sons and at that time, Royce was not considered the best fighter in the family. He had two older brothers that were absolute animals.

But old man Gracie wanted to prove a point. He was a 140 pound kid soaking wet and could not learn the fighting technique he was being taught so that is when he started to incorporate items from many different martial arts fields into what became to be known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu (or more commonly today as Brazilian JJ) which allowed a smaller opponent to take advantage of a larger opponent.

The whole point of the first UFC was to prove that his fighting style could work against other styles and sizes, so instead of choosing his best fighting son to represent the family, he chose his smallest, which was Royce.

I am blanking on the name right now but early in her UFC career, one girl got her back and it looked like she was about to be choked out but she stayed calm and got out of it.

That is the only time I can remember her being in trouble. Tate is the only one to go more than 1 round with her (she made it to the 3rd before getting arm barred).

Because the fights were fixed, bro. :lmao:

One of the reasons weight classes, timed rounds, no nut shots and gloves were introduced to MMA was not because bigger fighters were winning (as history shows they were not), but because John McCain went on a crusade against MMA trying to have it be illegal in every state.

Eventually that forced the state sports governing bodies to put some rules down. In the beginning, every state that allowed MMA had different rules.

It was not until 2000 when the Unified Rules of MMA were developed by New Jersey and they were eventually assimilated into all states who allowed MMA.

To this day MMA is still illegal in 3 US states, including NY.

It's to save the big dudes from being embarrassed.

Don't know enough about her fights. She ever been in a fight where the other girl put up a fight?.
I read that the Correia chicks previous fights had been against opponents who had a combined record of 1 win and 7 losses.
Seems the jury is still out on what happens if she does get punched in the face.
What we know for sure is that Floyd Mayweather prob wouldn't be able to get a shot in, and even if he did (mind you, without gloves), she'd eat it and just choke him out.

I see. So Chuck Norris is the only man that can hope to defeat her.

This is silly. No man alive could defeat Ronda Rousey.

I guess Ali wouldn't have a chance either...

I heard someone say she would destroy Mike Tyson in his prime

What you think ref?

I knew you in highschool and you were a big ##### then. Has anything changed?

:) kidding about all that, for I know you would have kicked my ### then, and now, obviously.

But seriously. you are a big dude, but you would get your as handed to you my friend.

Royce Gracie is 6ft tall and 175lbs.

She's a girl. Lol at people speculating about weight classes. Last time I check men didn't compete against women while weight classes are sometimes forgiven to make a fight happen.

She would kick the crap out of a lot of dudes but not everybody is a out of shape tub of goo. Most dudes who have been in a few fights in their life would mop the floor with her.

It's my experience that conditioning has nothing to do with the ability to defend an arm bar. Strength? Sure, but you would be surprised how much strength great technique can overcome. The other side of the coin, though, is by defending one submission, you open yourself to another. A skilled grappler will simply transition to something else. Bicep crusher, triangle, and belly-down armbars are all viable options when someone much stronger is able to keep from getting extended.

When you say, "most dudes who have been in a few fights would mop the floor with her"- do you mean barroom fights, amateur MMA, pro MMA, what do you mean by " a few fights"?

Most of you have seen women athletes right?

They are still feminine. Weaker, slower and smaller than men of the same size and training. Skill can help mitigate that some, but the differences are striking when fully confronted with the comparison.

RR could not defeat FM in any forum where he is allowed to punch her. She cannot defend against his speed and power. He is a world class athlete and fights other world class atheletes and wins. The argument is ludicrous.

This also brings me to the potential unidentified FBG. Can she defeat ANY average Joe no matter his size, strength or skill? Of course not. There are untrained men who by sheer size and strength would not be beaten by RR. Now the only question is, does a man like that post in the FFA? I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm 6'2", 240 lbs and somewhat athletic, but I've never been in a fight in my life. Someone my size with some kind of fighting/MA training could get it done I'm sure. 7" & 105 lbs is not only a lot, but factoring in the muscle mass and natural male developmental advantages, an insurmountable advantage.

Uhhhhh no. I used to say I had a better jump shot than LeBron. Now he has improved it vastly over his career so that is no longer the case.

Of course, you've never seen me play ball, so you have no basis for any discussion on the matter.

So what would RR do when Kamala lands on top of her? What type of hold or move will vacate the 350 pound mass off of her little 135 pound body? Everyone is focusing on all of the advantages that she holds with her skill and speed, but seem to forget a couple of obvious issues that she will have with a much larger opponent.

I think Kamala passed away last year. He wouldn't tap out but would probably be counted out before she got into position to submit him.

Arm bar the pounds away. She name it the Full Bar diet and sell it on early morning TV between rounds of her PPV to Oatis for $99.99 plus shipping and handling.

I'm a better dunker than Dominque ever was. Since you've never seen me dunk, you have no basis for discussion on the matter and you just have to accept that it is true.
