At some point you gotta say no.
I do think in future drafts you can find a decent replacement for him but he's entering his 5th year option, his cap hit might actually lower if they extend him before skyrocketing next year

Is he worth it? He's pretty good, I think some of his success is the surrounding pieces and the coaching but that's just one opinion
He was a 1st round pick, he's largely been a success, made a nice jump from year 2 to Year 3 and went further last season.

I think how they work around it is to make voidable years (player option) at the end of the contract for a low dollar amount. then when they turn some of the big dollars early in the deal to a bonus it spreads to those years that inevitably disappear.

Depending on who you draft with and your league settings and you can add Puka to that list and Jefferson with his qb situation. That is half the first round picks with pretty significant question marks.

Nacua isn't climbing into the 1st round, JJ will be fine IMO (*but those do vary amongst us) - as I was going more for absurdist than 1st round analysis, I wasn't clear I had in mind injuires only (first round only.) But you're right, there is uncertainty.

Strikes me this is always true, even blue chip.

• gosh I hope Joe Burrow's calf is OK that would suck if he re-injured it week 1.

I agree that they can sign Aiyuk and Purdy, and I think they will sign both--although I do think it's possible that Aiyuk decides to play out the year, if he wants 30/year. We don't really know how strong his conviction is. One thing we already know is that he isn't purely about money, otherwise he would be in NE right now. We can assume he prefers to stay.

If the 49ers really could not afford Aiyuk, they wouldn't be in negotiations with him. Whether it's 28 or 30 per year, from a cap standpoint, the difference isn't much.

I subscribe to the theory that a team can always sign their studs, and Aiyuk and Purdy are studs.

But in looking at their cap, they absolutely have some issues.Pretty much the entire DB room is coming up on free agency. Greenlaw and Campbell are most likely gone (Dee Winters chilling on my taxi squad......) And they have a dozen guys with Void cap hits on 2026.

That is not correct. The signing bonus gets spread to it over the life of the contract.

Sometimes there are extra years that clearly won’t happen at the end of the contract. That lengthens the contract and makes the hit each year less. However, when the player is cut or the contract is manipulated, the rest of the signing bonus that hasn’t hit yet is due. However, the cap is higher at that point because it is years down the line.

You may be thinking of how when a team needs cap space for this year, they change their salary to a signing bonus. The player gets the money up front. And whatever the salary is, say 20 million. It’s spread out of the life of the contract. Say 4 years. Then that is 5 million for the next for years instead of 20 million this year. Creating 15 million this year. It’s essentially, the team kicking the can down the road, hoping the salary cap will get higher so that money is not as big of a deal.

I think how they work around it is to make voidable years (player option) at the end of the contract for a low dollar amount. then when they turn some of the big dollars early in the deal to a bonus it spreads to those years that inevitably disappear.

Money that actually gets paid to the player never disappears. So if you add voidable years to the end of the contract, the signing bonus will be spread into those years, but when the contract ends, there will be a salary cap hit to any portion of the signing bonus remaining on the contract. There may still be ways to have that remaining hit spread over two years (post-June 1 cuts), but it will always be accounted for.

Bosa had a great 2023 season (all PFF data below from regular season only):

• Tied for #2 in PFF defense grade (92.7)
• #3 in PFF pass rush grade (92.6)
• #3 in pressures (95)
• #4 in pass rush win percentage (22.3%)
• Tied for #10 in stops (38)

Bosa had 3 sacks in the first 8 weeks of the season. He admitted that not having training camp set him back several weeks in regard to being in game shape. After the bye in week 9, he had 5 sacks in the next 3 games.

So yeah, it took him a while to get back to his usual self after the holdout.

Per PFF, he had 4 sacks in the first 8 weeks. More importantly, he had 44 pressures, compared to 50 pressures in games 9-16 (ignoring game 17 since he played just 8 snaps). IMO pressures is a much more valuable metric for judging pass rush effectiveness than sacks alone.

He had better game by game PFF grades in the first 8 games than in games 9-16, though it was close 5 of his 8 highest game grades occurred in weeks 1-5.

I'm sure it's true he wasn't as prepared at the start of the season due to the holdout, but he still played very well throughout.
