I think he's pulling that from OTC for next year which is not an accurate depiction as it doesn't include like $50MM they are rolling over from 2024. Plus Trent Williams accounts for $34MM alone in 2025 so his contract will almost certainly be reworked, along with 5 other guys with numbers over $20MM that could be adjusted too.

The NFL is the only system in America where new potential employees do not have at least some ability to choose their employer.

As a country we would go berserk if we tried to mandate this kind of anti-capitalist hiring system in any other industry.

What's worse is the NFLPA, who negotiated the pay scale for the rookies, did not have their best interest at heart and destroyed their bargaining power for the benefit of their current members.

I mean...that was kind of the right thing to do. Some of those rookie contracts were getting out of hand.

ETA: I mean this from the perspective of what a union should be doing for their members. They should be trying to funnel as many benefits as possible to their existing membership.

They didn't, really. They negotiated a change of how the revenue they share with the 32 individual teams is distributed. The pie allocated to incoming players was reduced.

They did more than that. They instituted a wage scale based on draft position.

Yes they did. I don't love it but l, again it is a union's responsibility to look after the best interests of their members and seniority absolutely factors into that.

Where they need to push harder is to shorten the length of initial contracts and fight to get rid of the fifth year option. That's going to be a tough fight but that's what unions do.

if I were ownership If that was the ask I'd then ask to limit the max length of a contract to 5 years which would cut down on the number of ludicrous long term deals.

Neither ownership or the NFLPA cares about phony money at the end of deals. They're a "No-harm-no-foul" add on.

The ask is the 18 game season. It's going to happen eventually, the owners are dying for it (because apparently their families will starve if they don't get it). The players will begrudgingly accept it but they need expanded rosters (they also need a second bye week but that's in everyone's best interest).

But the 18 game season is the pain point that may get the NFLPA better contract structures for rookies and, hopefully normalize shorter contracts with more guaranteed money for veterans.

That said, when they do that all the players will start griping at the end of year 3 or beginning of year 4, and we just get the same result a year earlier, no?

It depends honestly. Having bogus back end piles of money that the players will never see is the problem. Shorter, fully (or mostly) guaranteed contracts seems like a reasonable middle ground. But I don't expect to see "reasonable" enter the conversation during these negotiations.

His $14M salary is guaranteed. He isn't getting released, because that $14M would become a dead cap hit spread across the 2024 and 2025 caps, and SF would gain nothing. There is no cap hit to SF if he is traded; that would be a $14M cap savings.

Yes, these are the current terms of his contract. My question was rhetorical to the guy saying he isn't under a contract. Thanks for explaining it very succinctly.

Aiyuk has not exercised his option and isn't bound by the terms.

If he doesn't play the required amount of games this year the contract is re-rolled for next year and he is in the same boat under the same contract. Seems like he is bound to the terms. He also loses nearly $1M per game by not reporting and playing.

When players get contracts like this, and then hold out in yr 4 b/c they are underpaid, I'll then side with the owners.

The only variable that *seems* to have changed in the #49ers/Brandon Aiyuk situation: Kyle Shanahan said Aiyuk was cleared by doctors. Aiyuk was said to have back and neck issues early in camp. That would indicate if Aiyuk doesn't practice now, he'd be subject to fines.

Shanahan was asked if he would begin fining Aiyuk if he refuses to practice. He said he would deal with that potential scenario if that happens.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that the team’s doctors have cleared wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk: “I hope that he’s out there practicing today. We’ll just have him go through individual things like that. Start having him run routes without quarterbacks. Probably won’t let him go against other guys.”

Shanahan said that Aiyuk had told him he was in playing shape, but he wanted to see it firsthand before he threw Aiyuk back into the mix.

If Aiyuk refuses to practice, he could be fined. Shanahan said, “I’ll deal with that when it happens. If it happens.” He alsomade it clear that Aiyuk practicing is not a sign that an extension is around the corner.

As I have posted previously, OverTheCap and Spotrac are the best sources for NFL salary cap info. Spotrac presents the data in a more user friendly format than OTC. If you go to the Spotrac link I posted and go to the bottom, you can see all of the cost elements broken down and you can see the simple math that gets to ~$31M in available cap space. All the data is there, there is nothing hidden or mysterious... it is all facts.

That said, as of today, they aren't accounting for 2025 NFL draft picks or in-season costs. They will start accounting for that stuff when we get into the 2025 offseason. There will also be plenty of changes (e.g., restructure/extension of Williams' contract, same or trade for Aiyuk, etc.).

I don't know anything about Grant Cohen, but maybe he isn't using the best data available. Regardless, you can use it, because I linked it for you.

Watson's contract now calls for him to have $73 million cap hits the next two seasons, as well as $27 million in dead money after his contract runs out (in dummy seasons). As you said, you don't make a move like that unless you are trying to put all your chips into the pot.

And they took Kinlaw & got Aiyuk on the way back.

Aiyuk has been solid, but he’s no CeeDee Lamb. Kinlaw was a bust, so yeah.

Lamb had 1862 YFS and 14 TD on 149 touches last year. Aiyuk had 1342 YFS and 7 TD on 75 touches. I'm not suggesting that Aiyuk is better than Lamb, but projecting Aiyuk's production with a similar amount of touches, he would have had 2666 YFS and 14 TD.
