WR Brandon Aiyuk, SF (3 Viewers)

Hating on somebody would have to go awfully deep to walk away from 30 mil. Wow.
There is more here most likely, nobody in their right mind lays these cards on the table. Concerned BA has gone AB. Slow start after signing the contract compiled with the injury, I imagine social media trolls hit him hard. Hopefully he is not losing his mind. Hard to come up with another sound reason to leave that kind of cash on the table.

He will be a very interesting free agent, who'll probably need to sign a prove-it deal.

Maybe worth the risk to a New England team, with no top WRs?

Something is up here.

A lot to think about with salary cap and if he’s healthy enough to pass physical but for sure won’t be surprised if he’s traded in next few weeks.

Link didn't work for me.
For some reason it looks like he deleted his tweet but he was re-tweeting this

By the time I just tried to view this, it was also apparently deleted. No big deal, I have a sense of what it was.
Wow, did not know that. Seems like some backtracking/bad initial post.

Gist of it was this Chan lady said he had deleted all 49'er stuff from his social and had not been seen in the last two weeks.
Yeah, Niners Twitter and Reddit are now saying it’s a fake story. That said, I haven’t seen an apology from NBC Sports or Jennifer Lee Chan, and the Aiyuk article does say that he hasn’t been at practice. So, there could be some truth to what she was implying with her original Tweet. It would be consistent with Aiyuk’s past behavior.

It does not appear Brandon Aiyuk will make his return to the field for the 49ers any time soon.

The star wideout had been very visible during practice throughout training camp and early this season, running alongside his fellow receivers during the open portion of practice, with his speed and agility during those sessions giving the impression that a return from a devastating knee injury could be soon.

However, Aiyuk has not been seen on the field much in the past two weeks.
Looks like Jennifer Chan was right all along, but the Niners/ NBC Sports Bay Area told her to kill the story.

The only conclusion I’m coming up with is somebody so honest he can’t be corrupted or one of the saddest sports stories I can remember in a looooong time.

Very much hoping for the young man’s well-being.

I don’t know if I’m here saying it but I believed her and wouldn’t trust Lynch or Shanahan if they appeared before me with winged and gilded angels on each shoulder.

I did not think he was playing this season anyway. The injury is more than 12 month injury. The question is, why just let that kind of money go down the tube? There will be more on this story in the coming weeks. The question is what to do with him in dynasty and keeper leagues? I have him in a keeper league and have him under contract for at least another year, with an option to keep him an additional year if I want to. The contract is pretty cheap, thank goodness, and it appears it will remain a very affordable contract for me, but to what end? If the guy doesn't play, it is just a waste of space. On the flip side, I think this might actually be good for him long term with his dynasty and keeper value, or he could go in the crapper.

The Niners must be confident in wide receiver room to make this move. I did read that this was done a long time ago, so they had plans to let him go then. I do not see any reason to let him go in dynasty or keeper. Just have to hope he goes somewhere where he can get a fresh, healthy start.

I think this is good to keep in mind.

Also related, 95% of the stories we see covering the NFL aren't any kind of investigative work, they are publication of information that someone wanted published.

Oooooof

From the Atlantic. I’d link but it’s a pay access article. My friend sent me this excerpt.
After Brandon Aiyuk failed to attend meetings and declined to participate in 49ers team activities, sources say the team responded by voiding the guaranteed money in his contract for 2026, asserting that the absences amounted to a failure to fulfill his contractual obligations.
Here's the Athletic article: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/68...49ers-news-contract-guaranteed-money-release/
And here it is archived: https://archive.ph/iUFlF
Aiyuk, sources say, has failed to attend meetings and declined to participate in other team activities in recent months, and the 49ers have grown increasingly frustrated with the receiver’s lack of communication.
The 49ers, sources say, responded by voiding the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract for 2026, asserting that the absences amounted to a failure to fulfill his contractual obligations. Aiyuk, according to multiple league sources, told NFL Players Association representatives that he did not want to fight the move via an official grievance. That would clear the way for his expected release at season’s end.

Athletic. Oops.

Same thing. Except Athletic probably gets more right.

Who would ever sign this clown now. Just amazed at the supreme stupidity of some of these athletes.
A few teams that maybe not sign him but, clown genes run deep in ownerships blood, so ya never know

Browns
Dolphins
Cowboys
Jets
Raiders

Just off the top of my head.

Guy is a goofball but unless it’s injury ending his career, someone will sign him no doubt

Chiefs may consider replacing Marquise with him, they do not seem to shy away from the troubled,

Like the Pats during the Brady-era the Chiefs have the HC/QB/infrastructure to take chances on those type of guys (and usually at a discount)...if they work-out great but if they don't they just move on...I could see the Eagles as well as I fully expect AJB to be in a different uniform next year.

Can Aiyuk be released now or do they have to keep him on the roster and then cut him Post June 1, 2026?
This sounds like something where we could see Aiyuk unemployed as early as this week, not that anyone would likely sign him
He's still not over his injuries and there are new issues many have not discussed or thought were happening up to this point
Aiyuk's mental state is now being called into question...that's gonna be hard to measure for any of us from our couches at home

Aiyuk could still help the 49ers make a Superbowl run this year, so Shanahan is right to "leave the door open", even if the 49ers fully plan to cut Aiyuk next spring. I mean, the 49ers pass catchers are constantly banged up. When Aiyuk is medically cleared, am curious if Aiyuk is still "checked out", or if he plays hard to make his next contract more lucrative.

It appears he's one of these guys who's "happy / not happy graph" looks like a sine wave. You can just see the next peak or valley coming but there's always a team that thinks this time will be different.

I am deeply skeptical that anyone inside or outside of this organization really believes this.

I believe Aiyuk's salary is guaranteed for this year, and he was a top receiver two seasons ago, so there is no reason not to try and make it work with Aiyuk this year.
Except that he’s disgruntled and isn’t likely to suit up at all. Man just had $26M in guaranteed money voided, & you think he’s gonna come out and play winning football for a team he clearly hates?

It’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for them.

You may be right but there is also a scenario where it would behoove him to play and show the rest of the NFL his knee is healthy enough for a good contract.

I considered that (and Rotoworld suggested this in their update) but for one, we actually don’t know if he’s even healthy enough to play. For another, making sound strategic decisions doesn’t exactly seem to be in his wheelhouse. :oldunsure:

Agree. Just wondering where all the hate comes from. I know he was in the "doghouse" a couple times in the first two years, but that seemed all past. Overall Niners are a pretty solid organization and they paid him big money. I haven't heard a credible explanation of what the issues were/are.

I don't think it's likely that Aiyuk changes his attitude, but still no reason to cast him off prematurely. If you're paying him this year anyways, mine as well "leave the door open" for Aiyuk to improve his mood and play, as Shanahan is doing.

With Purdy coming back, CMC, Kittle, maybe Pearsall can get on track, the offense could definitely round into form these next 6-7 games
I'm skeptical of their defense, but no matter how you slice it or add it up, the Niners bring a ton of experience with them if they make the Playoffs or some how win the West
I know Rams, Seahawks, stranger things have happened, Rams have a pretty decent opponent tonight, and there is something not right in that Seattle/Tennessee game, can't quite put my finger on it but overall there is a lot to like about the Niners, this guy is just 1 of 53 and he might not be that for much longer

Who said good riddance earlier? I'm starting to understand why this was posted
Best thing for the Niners at this point would be to keep him off the field rest of the way
He's collecting checks right now so I think Aiyuk will stay relatively quiet thru this and address it more in the off season.
He might be ignoring their calls but he's not blasting away on social media right now

Terrible situation for SF, that organization deserves the best from the players they invest in
San Fran is relatively a nice place to live, especially if you have NFL money...it would be in my Top 10 teams to want to play for, maybe higher.
The minds of Shanny and the Front Office, just a matter of time before they return to the Super Bowl

In theory I agree. From the 49ers standpoint it’s beneficial.

In practice it’s probably awfully difficult to repair the trust that’s clearly been broken.

I don’t see him suiting up in a 49er uniform again. I could be wrong.

Definitely a winning culture, which makes me question how committed to football Aiyuk is.

On a related note, just imagine how Mike Singletary would have handled this.
I forgot he coached San Fran
Jim Tomsula made a stop as well around that time

What a bizarre situation

“There’s still hope that he’ll be on the field for the #49ers, and 2026 is yet to be written. We shall see. If he comes back and plays well, he could be a 49er next year — but right now, he’s sort of in limbo"

That’s the biggest pile of hopium I’ve ever read. Is there a betting line on this? I’d like to make a parlay that exactly none of these things happen.

And Chip Kelly
OK, you guys served your time
I'm a Phins fan so it's tough to say nice things about SF, I was 10 yrs old when my heart was ripped out at Super Bowl XIX

Yeah, I don't see it either but what if...

What. If. SF get in the playoffs, and make it to the divisional round (I know, highly unlikely but play along). Suddenly they're 2 wins away from another SB appearance...in this scenario, if Auyik was medically cleared to play, and he stayed in football shape, I could see a possibility where it might make sense from both sides for him to play.

Other than that scenario (and again, HIGHLY unlikely), I don't think we ever see him on the field for SF.
