WR Malachi Corley, NYJ (1 Viewer)

Intriguing if he can somehow become the Jets WR2...if Mike Williams stays injured or he passes him on the depth chart - and they don't trade for Davante etc.

The Coachspeak Index
#Jets HC Robert Saleh on Malachi Corley:

“He’s heavy, in terms of, you can feel him when he’s getting up there and he’s running with the football and you’re trying to tag off on him, or in the run game when he gets his hands on you and he’s blocking. He’s gonna be a fun player… We’re looking forward to seeing him in game action to see how it translates.”

The Coachspeak Index
#Jets HC Robert Saleh on Malachi Corley:

“We all know what he can do with the ball in his hands, and we’ve been able to kind of manufacture some situations where he does get it, and he’s as advertised when that ball’s in his hands. So, he’s been growing. Still a long way to go with his route-running”

He's Deebo Samuel with the ball in his hands. But here's the problem:

1.) He's behind Garrett Wilson and Mike Williams.
2.) All he's good at is getting the ball in space. He's not winning on routes downfield.

It's easy for me to stop Malachi Corley if I know he's catching 75% of his passes near the line of scrimmage, right? If he's not beating me down field, then I'm just going to play the screen.

If you're looking for 2024 production, it's not here. He's too raw. Once he becomes a good route runner and he can beat me 20 yards down field, sure. But I have no fear over a guy who's only going to be catching screens and slants.

We'll practice against that all week before playing the Jets.

"Malachi Corley, WR. His route running is a work in progress, but he can contribute immediately as a screen/gadget player, a la Deebo Samuel Sr. Right now, he projects as the WR5. He can solidify his standing on the game-day roster by landing a role as a returner."

LOL.

This guy languishes for half his rookie season. Inactive for weeks on end.then on literally his second career touch he makes a great play and has a brain fart on the way into the end zone and lets go of the ball too early.

Nice job, Einstein!

Brain fart? He got cocky and decided to release it as soon as he thought he was in.

Not sure why he still had his helmet strapped on the sidelines after....was he let back into the game?

I have no idea why players continue to do this. There’s a bunch of incidences of players letting it go too soon and not crossing.
Was it Desean Jackson from the Eagles who had a big one like that?

Yes, it was as stupid then as it is now. All you have to do is hold the football. There’s nobody around you. Do the Nestea splash. Do whatever. Cross the goal line with the football.

This guy should have a flight to Kalamazoo or something. First class ticket the **** outta wherever the team is.

It makes it seem like there are bonus points for dropping the ball as fast as you can. I really don't understand why they are in such a rush to drop the ball. I mean, in Corley's case I would hold onto it as I would likely want to keep it as my first NFL TD. Gotta pry that thing out of my hands.

I honestly do not understand why players do this. Is it intentional? Is it for rizz? Reminds me of these young UFC fighters that try to constantly have the walkoff knockout only to have their opponent get up. Anyway, back to yelling at clouds I go...

It was stupid but hes a kid who got really excited - Desean did it and had a pretty great career after.

kid has talent and should be working in over stiffs like Mike Williams and other JAGS.

I saw him playing the first series of the second half so it looks like Ulbrich agrees with you.

It was such a well executed play. Great call, awesome blocking, great running by Corley and then the drop.

Good point. My first NFL touchdown would be mine to hold on to forever.

But I still don't understand why excitement would lead to trying to drop the ball as fast as you can. That doesn't make sense at all.
if you look at him closely he was ridiculously excited - it was literally his 1st NFL touch and he "scored" a TD - while you cant make sense of it I think he just brain locked and went into early celebratory mode. stupid and luckily didnt cost them the game but assuming he learned from this the kid is a much better weapon than the other non Adams/Wilson Jet WRs.

Yeah he will undoubtedly be in the doghouse for a little bit but all the “cut him immediately” stuff feels reactionary in a “how bad teams are managed” way. Feels like the type of mistake you remember forever in a way that makes you more likely to do things the right way going forward.

If he does it again and makes clear he’s learned nothing? Sure, cut him. But they call em “rookie mistakes” for a reason

Worth a shot, although IDK about Fields, Wilson will be the #1 obviously, and I think they lean on the run game a lot more than last year. But if he can be WR2, he's worth something for sure.

was drafted by the previous coaching staff in believe he could assist the previous QB; I think this one might be toasted. The kid gotta prove himself

I think this is spot-on. Developmental receiver with a new staff and without the QB he was supposed to help.

I said it then. It was a terrible, terrible pick even back when the thinking was plausible. How do some GMs have jobs when Joe Average can see your pick sucks? I think they traded up to get this guy, IIRC. I’ll double check that.

Yes. He cost them a fifth-round pick to trade up from 72 to 67. They traded up and they reached. Truly stupid.

Sure looking that way. Plus everything else is stacked against him.

When I read the headline, I thought, "Oh brother. We all know there are drones in the sky everywhere these days, and people still make a big deal about random lights in the sky?" But I watched his videos and I have no idea what that could be. Obviously it's not some alien spacecraft. But curious what the heck it is. It's like blue light in the pattern of a grate. It would seem that it's huge.

Gee, if only our 41 year-old quarterback had this gadget player who was good at WR screens and nothing else I think we'd certainly finish better than 4-13.

*confetti*

When the regime that traded up for him and compared him to prime Deebo didnt play him all year - I cant see him making inroads with the new regime.- however there is opportunity here if he somehow improved in offseason.

I haven't got past him having a zillion percent pass caught behind the line of scrimmage and within five yards.
I've tried to like this guy predraft but....
Last year bump.

So do the Jets have to throw this guy screens for him to have success?
He had atypical highlights and I kept think of Miami. Mike McDaniel would use this kid on screens and have Tua do his basketball behind the back handoff and...

Rodgers doesn't play like that. What happened last year in camp and before Davante came to town? Was he looking like he's making progress as a legit WR?

Over the years, I've praised too many UFL XFL CFL WRs and people oh so often point out to me that they're not running NFL routes, that's college and maybe high school stuff. Corley is about the same type as we were discussing so the Jets either gotta develop him as a sincere WR or send him to the Fins or UFL. NFL offenses just don't match his style.

And he's as much Deebo as Treylon Burks is

That emoji wasn't laughing at you. It was this comment that did it. Oh, Treylon Burks. He killed so many rookie drafts. I stayed away from that cat in my drafts, thankfully. I hated how they were talking about him pre-draft, and when he went to the Titans I thought, "Wow. No way is this team going to figure out how to use a guy that really has no defined traits or position and who they call an athletic freak but runs a 4.55." It was just never going to happen and I'll pat myself on the back for that one.

I hate project receivers like Corley and Burks who didn't win running routes downfield. Laviska Shenault and company. Just don't give me that. Even if you're a deep ball specialist at least you're that. These guys, as you point out, weren't even running good routes in pro offenses. They're just standing there getting the ball thrown to them so they can tote the rock, lower the shoulder, and stomp all over the field after they get a first down in college. On Saturday.

Big deal. Try running a good, solid professional route and get back to us for the Sunday affair.

There have been some like TO and Moss but it takes some thought to think of a better situation for a rookie WR than Burks was handed.
Learn from a hall of famer(DHop) who replaced a hall of famer(Julio) and step right into a starting role. Oh time to develop? Take your time, no rush. Asthma? Rest up and learn by watching.
It doesn't get any more custom made than that in Nashville

This X2, have him 2 leagues on Taxi Squads... bet he'll be floating in many FA Pools by mid season
