Yet another Pitt Bull attack (1 Viewer)

Look, I'm pretty moderate about this. I don't particularly care for the animal. But there are other considerations, such as:

  1. The proliferation of the breed in mixes. It's almost impossible logistically to ban this breed
  2. The sociopolitical implications of coming after pit bulls
  3. The science behind the breed - are they really attacking at a higher rate, or is this a media-driven narrative?

The problem is when they attack it's brutal.  An attack by a poodle is not the same as an attack by a pit.  The above article someone posted listed the attacks that caused bodily harm.  The pitbull blew away all the other breeds combined.

I totally agree. Eating your owner is pretty ####### crazy.

I have a friend who rescues and fosters too many animals. She had a Maltese for a couple months. A few days ago it went vicious and attacked her after several less severe incidences. She needed 12 stitches. She's fine today. She returned the little ####. If it was a Pit she'd be fortunate if she was still in the hospital.

Honestly, you need look no further than the intersection of this thread, with the people fighting viciously for their right to own assault rifles, to see everything that is so very wrong with this country.  There are some bright lights, but on average, jesus christ we are not smart people.
:goodposting:  Ignorant is a good word to use for this thread

not to rehash the same argument for the 100th time, and yes that number is certainly significant. But what are the total number of dogs, and what is the total number of each of those 22 breeds. I saw German Sheppard was #3. Also, how many people go to doctor/hospital for a bite? i was bit long time ago by a dog, went to pet it and it bit me right in the ### as i walked by. Wasn't a pitbull, think it was a labmix, but didn't report it so it wasn't added to these studies.

Well, I mean, it wasn’t reported because it’s bite was a nuisance more than a danger. If a pit bull bit you in the exact same way it probably would have been reported because you probably would have been pretty ####ed up. That’s kind of the point here.

If a poodle causes a death 1 out of every 10,000 attacks, and a pit bull does one of every 10, who really cares if the poodle attacks 100 times more often? I’m making these numbers up but this is the thing I don’t get when people don’t get.

If I have a toaster that explodes and kills my kid well that’s pretty messsed up and awful luck. If I have a grenade in the living room and my kid  gets blown up well, that’s pretty much on me.

Yes I am 100% comparing a live grenade to a pit bull type dog.

That sounds a little hyperbolic. Personally, my three-point little post was taking into account mentally the damage done when an attack occurs. That's important. I was advocating a certain way, not going point-counterpoint. It's impossible to ban this breed without slaughtering a whole lot of animals and angering certain communities.

But the counterpoint about the damage done by these attacks is certainly taken and was thought about. I'm just not sure we can do anything about it other than make breeding illegal, which if we're going into analogies, might work as well as the prohibition on alcohol or drugs. It'll just send certain breeders underground where they might value the more demonstrably violent dogs.

:clyde:  i truly hate this thread. I can't speak for all pit bulls in the entire world, but in my experience i have met plenty of other dogs that are more similar to a live grenade then my my pit bull. I really don't know how to answer anymore, and i really don't care to fight this fight forever, just can speak from personal experience that i have met plenty of pit bull types that were better behaved dogs, and showed more restrain, then other more common dog breeds. Had a lab attack my pit bull once years ago at a dog park. dopey girl was on her cell phone, so i don't know if blaming the dog is the best, but my dog was attacked and did not kill anybody.

I mean, i think i already apologized to you bud, but how many times do i need to apologize for the Eagles kicking the living #### out of the Vikings. You guys think pit bulls are bad, the beating the Eagles put on the Vikings in the NFCCG should be banned. that was not fair.  :coffee:

Yes yes we know. Your pit bull is super sweet and nice and lovable and wouldn’t hurt a fly. It would be totally stunning and shocking if it got loose and murdered your neighbor’s kid. Honestly you just had no idea. You didn’t see it coming and you feel awful about it. Tragic.

Uh I mean your dog is super sweet and cuddly.

If you didn't have to see a doctor, did it really do "bodily harm" as those numbers are tracking?

Pretty sure we can say with statistical certainty there are not more pit bulls than the next 20 breeds combined.

So then we agree that we slaughter all the existing ones and ban the breeders and breed statutorily, which is not only impossible and cruel but also sounds weirdly like a ton of court challenges.

I do understand your point and where you are coming from.

That was completely uncalled for and now we are fighting.

Pit Bulls have been banned from owning in my county since the 1990s, but there are definitely some living in some streets around my neighborhood.  When I take my dogs for walks they run to their wooden fence and bark viciously.  I haven’t reported them or said anything, but one of these fences is on its last leg and I don’t want to be the neighbor that has to fight a pit bull for getting out of his yard.  Any thoughts?

If you have a HOA report it, they might make the neighbor fix the fence more quickly than any animal control agency would.  If you don't have an HOA you could file a report with your local Humane Society or SPCA for a nuisance dog, they should look into it.

No HOA, I might type a note and leave it in their mailbox.  By no means do I want to have any dogs euthanized, but I also don’t want them loose on the streets either.

I'd call Animal Control. I have called them in a similar situation. They responded in an area where Pit Bulls are common (not banned). The owners cross fenced the side yard so the dogs could no longer see through to the street. I liked the solution so much I did my own yard the same way.

My wife told me my BIL who has two small boys just got a pit bull. You can imagine how that set me off on a tirade for 10 minutes. I lost it a little bit.

For the record, he has neck tats and lives in a trailer.

Grease a sponge and throw it over the fence.

Some woman posts this on FB today:

”Please help! Duke got out this morning. We live on •••• Street, behind ••••• School. He's a fat black and white pitbull. He's very friendly; great with people, other dogs, kids, and even cats. He's big, but very sweet so please don't be afraid of him. If you see Duke, or even think you might have, please call or text me at ****”

All I keep thinking is “hopefully Duke gets hit by a car.”  Is that mean?

Best part is not only did she irresponsibly unleash her one stupid death machine on the world, as she tells us how sweet and harmless it is (novel, we have never heard that before, and surely we can believe it), but in the pics she has another one shown in the background. Only thing smarter than a family with one of these things is a family with two.

Thanks Murica.  You keep doing you.

Milwaukee, WI - After a 49-year old woman was found dead at her home over the weekend, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Monday she died due to "maulings by dogs." Hong Saengsamly was found dead at her home in the 500 block of North 28th Street late Saturday after her son, Jack, stopped by for a well-being check. When Jack entered into the home, he encountered her three dogs guarding the body and growling -- two pit bulls and a chihuahua.

The medical examiner listed Hong Saengsamly's cause of death as "multiple puncture and blunt force injuries" due to "mauling by dogs."

Jack tried to get the dogs away from her, but one of the pit bulls became so aggressive, he had to shoot it multiple times, according to the police report. Saengsamly was found in the kitchen. In a separate room, connected to the kitchen, a large black and white pit bull was lying on its side after being shot twice. There were two more bullet holes in the north wall of the room, according to the report. Jack claimed none of the dogs were violent and "had never attacked a person before."  :wall:

South Texas Boy, 4, Fatally Mauled By Family's Pet Dog

Wanna take a guess at what kind of dog it was?  Go ahead. We'll wait. :wolf:

Hint1: Bit in the neck.

Hint2: Not a golden retriever!

4 year old was left alone in the backyard with the pitbull.....more outrage should be shown towards the parent's horrible decision of leaving their child unattended than the breed of this particular dog.

Who says there isn't? If there was a stupid parents thread I am sure this would be in there.

You cant have it both ways though bucko. You cant argue it isn't the breed, but then call it a bad decision to leave a 4 year old alone with the cute cuddwy wittle guy.

It doesn't matter the breed. A child that young shouldn't be left unattended....let alone with a large, powerful dog.

By the way, I noticed this dog was chained up outside. Not sure of the laws in that town, but it's illegal here to have a dog chained up outside.

Parents leave 4 year olds unattended quite often unfortunately. It is why there are stupid warnings on 5 gallon buckets. Somewhere along the line California mandated that the dumb drowning warning go on the side of 5 gallon buckets and then it spread from there, yet somehow people can just go get deadly animals and expose them to other people without any required warnings or steps.

How messed up is that?

Just cringeworthy.  Idiot owner should go to jail, and/or pay hefty fines.  Dog should be put down.  End of discussion.

Frankly, I'd be OK with putting the owner down too.  But, baby steps.

This wouldn't have happened if she'd had a dog class in high school.
