I would love a one-post-per-three-minutes rule in order to slow down the people who give less than ten seconds of thought to each post, but Invision doesn't offer that feature.

Things already have changed. They’ve improved. Basically the mods have gotten tougher and things have gotten better.
Certain things are better but there are plenty of the same old nonsense occurring in many of the threads.  I don't think anyone is trying to get this place shut down but we all know you're going to claim greatness because you fear Joe shutting it down.  Anyway, people gonna do what they want that's pretty clear.

I claim greatness because I’m great! (Damn I sound just like Trump.)

I don’t think Joe is especially impressed by what I have to say.

Completely agree and I’ve chosen to put those people on ignore.  The mods are jeopardizing the future of the boards by not doing anything about it, IMO.
Hey, hey. Let's keep the other boards out of this, eh? The posters on the other boards are actually capable of acting like adults.

Man...I just can't help but wonder when each of us gets to our final days on our death beds if we will regret or appreciate the amount of time we spent arguing with virtual strangers on a message board where almost no minds were changed as an outcome.

I think I will regret it.  I am almost certain of that.
The EAT-OFF videos make it all worthwhile.

With you GB.

I've been thinking a lot about "mental capacity" too. Meaning we all have X amount of mental work and time we can do each day. We allocate it to family and work and friends and entertainment and whatever.

I see the volume of posting from some folks and I see they're obviously smart and capable and my thought is "They should be putting that mental energy and time to work somewhere where it'll make much more of an impact besides talking with / debating with fake screen names". I realize that makes the boards less good. I'm fine with that.

Are you making this statement about the PSF? Or does this apply to the SP as well?

Not sure this is actually true. Unless you equate acting like adults to not reporting posts. The same comments happen in the other forums.

To add, I know the "keyboard warrior" thing is a tired thing but I wonder if there's not some truth woven in with that in how it relates to my thought I'd love to see folks devote more time to causes they're passionate about outside of the forum.

I heard Gary Vaynerchuk say the other day the reason he thinks you should put very little value on criticism one receive on social media is this. Paraphrasing he says "Look around at the keyboard warriors. What they type doesn't match their real life actions. Everyone knows it people are full of it online and their lives don't match what they type. So nobody believes the negative reviews either".

I do think there's some sort of mental thing where if one types something, that somehow makes them feel like they've actually done it. And while it's good to talk about it, it's a lot better to actually be doing it.

Are you making this statement about the PSF? Or does this apply to the SP as well?
I'm thinking mostly about the PSF as much of the stuff that gets talked about, they could actually be doing.

If you're passionate about a candidate, I think time spent volunteering for the campaign is more effective than arguing here. Same with other issues.

For Fantasy Football talk, that's basically pure entertainment. It's not so much like they could go start doing the things they're talking about in the Shark Pool as easily.

Bottom line, I'm always on the side of doing is way better than typing.

And I know there's great value in an online community and friends. I do feel though a little guilty for creating a space for what feels like a not great use of time for a lot of people. And I get the personal responsibility thing. I'm not forcing anyone to post here. I just wonder if I shouldn't encourage more getting out in real life and making a difference.

To some, political talk is entertaining. And possibly more important than fantasy football talk. (curious that you capitalized Fantasy Football in your post. Shows the importance you place on it ;) ).

I also think that we have a perfect storm right now. Lots of political happenings and we are in the dead of winter. And the holidays are over. For me, then next few months are always the least productive.

Yes, you are right.  I didn’t mean for my post to com across like I was blaming the mods but it did.  I said earlier folks just need to act like adults.  My point should be that I hope the mods get rid of those who don’t.

It does come down to a "what's the best use of your time?" type question. I get it.

I think about that more as I'm older now than I used to.

There are a lot of advantages of discussing things here instead of in person.  There is a bigger audience here.  There is a record of the discussion.  It a good trial run for how you articulate things in real life.  Eventhough the board has a slant, there are still diverse views presented.  I think some of the worries about misinformation from poor sorses is kind of silly.  Bad stories get shot down rather quickly.  Really, a lot of these issues are pretty sensitive and stir up emotions in some people which is probably best to avoid in real life.  I find the discussion worthwhile.  Eventhough the names may be fake, there are real people behind them.  My name is basically real.

Oh for sure. Fantasy Football is what allows this forum to exist.

Cool. How about you start posting with your real name and where you live and where you work like I do. Let's be real about this.

Jon is my real name.  I have said where I live and some of the work I have done, where I went to school.  It would not be overly hard to ID me if one chose to do so.  But there is value in having some anonymity which I thought I articulated.

Sigh. Are we really doing grammar police on a Saturday morning?
Sorry Joe. My original comment about it, was that I thought it was a slip up. You obviously hold fantasy football as being very important. I see why you would. But, then you doubled down on it.

Sometimes I over analyze things. (okay, I always over analyze things)

It's the perfect thread where someone should be limited to 10 posts.  If one wants to spend all 10 whining about a link for Obama not notifying the G8 so be it.  But it would be a lot easier to read the good stuff if the same few posters weren't posting the same stuff every 2 minutes.
I think like JB stated the PSF might be reaching the end of it`s useful lifespan for the business side of things and that is understandable.   Sinn made some good points.   Seems like 75% of the PSF posts come from 10% of the members and that gets old fast.

Does the FFA do anything for the business side?

Not sure as JB has stated before the forums run in the red.  In the FFA 10% don`t not control 75% of the posts though.  So like sports if you bring more to the table than you take away you are a plus player, if not you are a minus player. The PSF looks to be on the minus side in the bosses eyes.

Ahhhhh the usual Orangemanbad segment showing up to clutter a good stream of news and discussion with partisan politics as usual.

Perhaps I'm wasting my time sharing news in here.

very  :goodposting: . Unless you profess your hatred towards Donald you will never be one of the boys here. Believe me, you have to hate him
@Maurile Tremblay  These posts were in the Iran thread.  They clearly violate the spirit of your rules in the OP.  Should posts like these be reported or ignored?

It has nothing to do with running in the red. None of the forums generate cash flow.

The reality is, it's the topics that are discussed. It's not even the bickering or personal comments. JB and I discussed, and he admitted that there may be a double standard applied when it comes to moderating the SP vs the PSF.

It's acceptable to attack another fan base in the spirit of sportsmanship, it's not acceptable to attack another political base. (because it's not about sportsmanship)

I don`t make the rules and really don`t care one way or the other as I can go with the changes and flow.  If it stays fine, if it goes fine, it will not impact my life at all.  I will still look at the SP and FFA.

Very little. There are always a few people that say they buy our business product as a way of saying thanks for the forum. For the most part, it's a financial loss.

We intentionally don't overly push the business products that allow it to exist. We'd considered trying ads there to generate some money but I didn't feel like fighting the pushback.

It's purely a fun thing we've tried to offer as community.

I’d like to make a quick comment on this because I hear it a lot and I’m aware that I have more posts than anyone else (people seem to love to remind me of this!)

For me it’s just a quirk of what I do. I’m a commercial real estate agent and property manager, I work in a small company: just me and my dad and one secretary. I make good money but I have a lot of down time, basically hours each day. Things get busy for me several times a month, and I mean REALLY busy, and that’s when I earn my keep. And the nature of my job is that I’m never really off- I can be working 24/7. But again there is a lot of downtime. So I read a lot of books. I play a lot of online chess. I listen to news and sports. And I engage in discussion because I love it. If this board wasn’t around I’d probably find another though I doubt it would be as good: I’ve sampled a few.

Outside of work, I have a happy family: a lovely wife, two beautiful brilliant daughters (though the 2nd one is about to go to college so we will be empty nesters and that’s a scary thought.) I spend tons of time with them. I’m not some weird dude hiding in my mom’s basement feverishly posting all the time, lol. Things are pretty good with me; I get a lot out of life.

The final point I would make is that posting in this forum doesn’t require big commitments of time for me. About 90% of the time I post here it’s on my phone. Takes about 20 seconds, then I’m off doing something else, then I might come back to it. But I can be here conversing and doing several other things in the real world.

So when you think to yourself “he should be putting that mental capacity elsewhere”- well maybe but this is relaxation for me. Like sports and fantasy football. It’s a form of entertainment. Everyone needs a lot of that.

No worries. It's fine. I will say though nothing makes me realize I'm wasting time here more than grammar police.

My opinion would be you're underestimating how much time you could be using productively in a way that made a difference vs just entertainment.

I think GM is right.

This is where our breakdown occurred. I wasn't trying to be the grammar police. I was reading into the subconscious reason why you capitalized Fantasy Football. It's similar when someone posts in all capital letters. There's a reason behind it.

Just thinking about your thread: Be a Better Writer And Poster - Be a Better Person

You make your living off people who spend hours each week playing a game within a game: fantasy football. That’s a pretty time consuming hobby. Would you feel comfortable lecturing your customers about how their time could be better spent productively in a way that made a difference rather than trying to decide who to start at wide receiver next week?

And to add @timschochet - I know I'm likely saying something that would make our board less good.

I do that because I truly want people to make a difference. Not just go round and round with screen names.

I'm a fan of social media. I'm not one of those old guys bemoaning that kids don't go outside anymore. I'm just realizing more and more though that doing stuff is way better than talking about it. And I don't want people to regret not doing more.

If this is just pure entertainment, then maybe it doesn't matter. I just want people to get the most out of what they want to do. Even if that means our boards aren't quite as good.

Sorry if you think that's "lecturing". I will always tell people to make a difference in what they feel is important to them.

I can’t believe anyone is questioning Joe for writing Fantasy Football.

It's a noble effort. But, in the end, it's really up to each person. There could also be an opposite effect. Where people could be making things worse in the real world if they weren't posting here.

It's not a proper noun. (now I'm being a grammar policeman). The reason people capitalize words is because the feel they are more important.
