Your seven favorite movies ever. Go. (1 Viewer)

What did people like about the Fifth Element?
Add in Inception and Memento to that list.
Inception is interesting but overrated IMO. Not sure what people wouldn't like about Memento.
For starters, unless the guy was a tattoo artist or watched a How-to-tattoo-yourself video every day I take issue with the tattooing to communicate/remember concept in general.
He didn't do all of his own tattoos.
He at least did some.

Clerks

The Big Lebowski

Lost Highway

Braveheart

Friday

Mulholland Drive

Twin peaks-fire walk with me

The crow just missed out.
 :X

Shtick, right?
My favorite list....but I REALLY liked the TV show and David Lynch. I didn't know the show or the movie existed until I was in college and watched them ... altered ... could have something to do with it. Mallrats probably is 9th after The Crow. Really really liked Eternal Sunshine too. Royal Tenenbaums, No Country for Old Men, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Fargo, Inglorious Bastards, etc...those are my kinda flicks.

Different strokes, right?

Seriously? That is a bizarre thing to be bothered by IMO.

Sammy Jankis wrote himself notes but it didn't work. He didn't have a system. He'd just get them all mixed up.

Goodfellas

Godfather

Godfather Part II

Pulp Fiction

Lone Star

Layer Cake

Swingers

Honorable Mention: City of God, Dr. Strangelove, Snatch

Not when the uniqueness of the movie is based on his ability not to learn or remember new things. It would be like Bruce Willis in Sixth Sense interacting with people/things even though he is a ghost. It poisons the entire movie.

No it's not really like that at all IMO. It seems quite easily explained.

He visited tattoo parlors to get his tattoos, it was in the movie.

Chronological order... first 10-15 minutes he is making some jailhouse tattooing tools, rapidly finding information in some thick file, etc. etc.

Well yea. When he needs to remember something before he forgets he's got no time to get to a parlor.Still a very odd thing to get hung up on for this movie when theres plenty of other stuff to pick apart.

I only watched it once - when it first came out. I recall it being full of plot holes but that was one that stuck out to me.

Wings of Desire

The Third Man

Bladerunner

Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

The Lives of Others

The Seven Samurai

Before the Rain

He didn't do all of his own tattoos.
He at least did some.
You consider it a plot hole that he can do simple tattoos on himself?

Based on the premise of his condition - yes. I mean, I suppose that during his spare time working for the insurance agency that he and his wife thought it would be great to become amateur tattoo artists using basic household items. However, I doubt that is the case. I remember that being one of many issues I had with the movie.

I think your issue on this specific point isn't with the fact that he was tattooing himself but rather you felt the tattoos were of too high quality for a self taught individual using homemade tools.

Again, that really doesn't seem like a big issue to fault a film for taking artistic license.

It is both. They were seemingly pretty high quality for a guy who had to reteach himself every day but also the needing to reteach/rethink the knowledge to assemble said tools and prep himself for tattooing. I only watched the movie one time but I do recall him remembering some things with no problems and not others. When the hook of the movie is a guy who can't create new memories.... you can't have him creating new memories. The movie has to remain internally consistent otherwise it is just a mess. Cool idea - poor execution.

He didnt forget his skills. He had no short term memory. Skills like driving, reading and writing dont go away.

Can't create NEW memories. Everything he did before the accident, he could recall. Like knowing how to make a tattoo device at home.

I think you should have watched it more than once.

Goodfellas

The Usual Suspects

Running Scared

Beautiful Girls

Busty Cops

Godfather

In the line of Fire
Not near my top 10, but I really like this movie.

Frank Horrigan: Oh, he'll call again. He's got, uh, "panache."
Lilly Raines: Panache?
Frank Horrigan: Yeah, it means flamboyance.
Lilly Raines: Mm, I know what it means.
Frank Horrigan: Really? I had to look it up.
:lmao:

Not the sort of stuff I was referring to.

So jailhouse tattooing with household items is common knowledge? That is just the tip of the iceberg.

I didn't need to watch it more than once... I saw a ton of flaws the first time through.

Such a gift must make it difficult to enjoy many movies.
Depends on the movie and how the movie tries to sell itself. Inception and Memento try to be intelligent, thought provoking, movies. They fall flat because they are either nonsensical or internally inconsistent.

I think you'd enjoy them more if you'd just look at that stuff for what they're supposed to be - a MacGuffin.

While I really enjoyed Pulp Fiction and it does have some great memorable scenes and lines...I really feel it has not aged as well as I thought it would. I recently watched it again and was kinda ok...been there done that.

Yet Reservoir Dogs is always fantastic and has aged great.

Thats just me though.
