Without checking, I'm guessing:
- Hoomanawanui - mostly at FB/h-back
???? - They had about 5-6 TE's at one point.
Gronk is obviously not being pupped.

Its not about the official position, its about the bodies able to play the position.
Vereen can fill in on those routes very easily.

So until Gronk gets back to full steam, whether that means Game 2-3 or Game 6, what does it mean that the Pats will be having two active TE's until then, Sudfeld and Hoomanawanui?
Will both be playing at the same time, or are they moving to more of a '12' type package, with 2 RB and 1 TE?

The Patriots are carrying just three tight ends: Sudfeld, Rob Gronkowski and Michael Hoomanawanui. Drafted Sudfeld behind Witten. Looking forward, I don't think I'm going to play him and just put him out there for trade. Unless Witten gets hurt before Gronk returns, unless somehow Sudfeld has exceptional value with Gronk present, I'm starting to wonder if I'm ever going to actually start the guy in FF.
Done with the summer, looking forward, I'm starting to pause here. I suppose this means I don't think Sudfeld has much value when Gronk returns.

Love his potential in that Hernandez role. But his value is all over the place. He was picked up on BBIDs in most of my 12 team PPR dynasty leagues for the year allowance. But he was also just traded along with a 2nd in 2014 for V. Brown (which seems way too cheap to move him IMO)

all of this talk about the "hernandez role"... what if they go to more 3 WR sets? Is there anything that says they will still run a lot of 2 TE formations? I just don't know if he will get the number of targets that hernandez did.
Heh I got to that point and was clueless. I just did that trade block deal on the league site, and waiting for offers.
I don't think he's athletic enough to emulate Hernandez. Aaron isn't going to be easy to replace.

Hes athletic enough for what he needs it for. Hes only a little bit slower and he looks just as quick as Gronk (who has always looked quicker than Aaron) and hes bigger than Aaron, Sudfeld is 5" taller and has a 4" higher vert.Bri said:

C'mon now...put down the koolaid. Let's not pretend Hernandez was #### now. Sudfeld may be decent in the role, but let's not anoint him the next great UDFA just yet.

This thread has a lot of wishful thinking, especially for a guy who fumbled the only time he touched the ball... yea that's how you win over BB, he seems like a reasonable forgiving guy!

Believe what you want, I never liked Hernandez and that is evidence by my countless posts on the subject leading back into the 2011 preseason... Hernandez wasn't the physical freak people made him out to be - he was a big slow WR that played WR as a TE somehow over time his hands got worse.
No matter what you believe, Sudfeld is a bigger missmatch than Hernandez' slightly faster top end - and thats a fact.

I don't understand this defensive tone. I haven't seen a single person suggest he is Gronk; and your position is even more laughable - Sudfeld hasn't been playing as the inline TE once... he was never going to play the role Gronk does.

Simply referencing statistics, not actual position. I honestly think they'll be running a lot less 2 TE sets this year - I think Shane is going to be the real beneficiary of the current TE situation, just my opinion. He is an UDFA & there is way too much hype for him as of now.Also, if you go to the comment right above yours, the poster not only compares him to Gronk, but Hernandez as well... Which is just insanity as of now.
All I'm saying is that the Sudfeld hype will be short lived. That's my opinion, we'll see how it plays out, maybe I'm wrong.

I'm assuming you're referring to one of my posts above on Sudfeld being a possible improvement over Hernandez, but I still haven't read a single post in here comparing him to Gronk. Outside of their frames they are completely different players.

I believe Vereen will absorb 100% of Woodhead's targets and most of Ridley's. I don't think we will see Sudfeld line up in the backfield ever, which was something Hernandez and Welker used to do and instead will see a lot of 2 back formations. Also I think we will be seeing a lot of 3 wide formations and the WR3 will rotate between all the WRs and Vereen. I'm flexing him with confidence in PPR leagues. I think that backfield is going to be really hectic, similar to the 2011 season when Woodhead would play entire drives and just move all around during the drive.

I guess we have different ideas of comparing people... Height, vert, speed - I'd consider that a comparison. Not even worth debating if you're denying that.
I'm no Hernandez fan, he's a murderer - but he was still very talented... You've gotta be completely over the ledge to say he'll be an improvement over Grand Theft Hernandez!

The only comparison made to Gronk was that IMO they appear to be similar in their ability to get off the line - his quickness. I wasn't denying anything, but your original post made it seem as though people were touting Sudfeld to be anywhere near the same level as Gronk. The reality is I'm high on Sudfeld and my reasoning for that is I was never impressed with Hernandez to begin with. I think if any other TE could come and play in the Pats system and fill the role Hernandez did, then they have a pretty good shot at putting up similar numbers if not better. I think Sudfeld might be capable of that from what little I've seen of him. All he has to do is understand the offense and the rest is just being a missmatch with good hands.
Might be tempering my expectations after this report, as I was thinking he would be a lock to be an every down TE till Gronk got back.

I'm fairly confident they will run more 3 wide, but hernandez was basically a wr on a lot of plays last year, so I think it's kind of semantics.
I think labeling players by position is more useful in fantasy football than real football

League 1 - Have Julius Thomas and can play Sudfeld however I have Brandon Marshall, Calvin Johnson, and Victor Cruz also starting. Leaving it like that.
League 2 - playin Sudfeld over Tavon Austin and Kenbrell Thompkins. Also have Thomas in this league but this decision will be tougher had Crabtree not been injured or Blackmon not been suspended.

You should probably put in Miller. It's funny, in my fppc league I find people overvaluing TEs in a very similar fashion. Don't do it, it's a trap. TE5-12 are still going to function very much like a WR3/low-end WR3.

I'm also operating under the assumption this is 1PPR everywhere else.
I'm thinking Miller totals 80-90 yards with a handful of receptions (2-4). TDs are fluky but admittedly he has less of a chance to score/secure one than Sudfeld. There are question marks surrounding the his workload (with DT saying they'll be splitting snaps) but I think talent will win out as soon as week one.
As for Sudfeld specifically, it's hard to get a gauge on how much he'll be used as well. I just feel like his floor is much lower based on volume (or lack thereof). If I'm trying to decide between two unknown quantities as it pertains to my flex, I'm going to usually choose the one I think will see more work/snaps and I think that will be Miller.
I also do have a horse in this race, and that's Sudfeld. I'm starting him ahead of F. Davis in standard.

Starting Sudfeld as a flex over Ingram, Allen, Cameron, Floyd (SD), Gordon.
I am definitely thinking on it, but with .5ppr for RB's and 1.5ppr for TE's, makes it VERY VERY close to be honest. Just not sure what to think of with Miami's situation and would rather gamble i think with the NE passing game.
Who knows, might change my mind 5 more times before kickoff.
