Steak-umms yea or nay? (1 Viewer)

I heard the fda made them change their name from steak yum because they weren't technically steak or yum. But umm... was ok because that is most people's honest reaction to calling that steak.

Yes.

Sautee onions and bell pepper.

Steak Ums in....touch em up with a little Worcestershire.

Good in an omelet or on a sandwich

Probably haven't had them in 30 years, but they're just shaved ribeye, right?
I don't know what cuts they use to form these sheets of beef, but there's no way they are wasting ribeye on it. My guess is that it's finely minced/liquified round flattened out into sheets with a binder to hold it all together.

ETA: Nevermind on the binder. All beef baby. Surely round, but beef

Big fan as a kid - now no.
Same here, except I haven't had Steak-umms since the '80s. Hypothetically, I could still like them.

I assume the local groceries still have them ... but they must be in a weird spot, because I never see Steak-umms as I'm shopping for the usual sundries.

Never would have guessed there was nothing but beef in those.

Still eat them from time to time. They aren't as good as a real cheesesteak, but they do the job. Another vote for cooking them in a skillet. Never had them microwaved before.

I wouldn't have either.

I don't completely hate them, but I don't really buy them either. There's an off flavor in there that I don't care for.

If I want a quick, cheap, hot, formed beef product to throw on a sandwich, I prefer to just throw some deli pastrami, corned beef, or roast beef in a skillet.

How many do you cook to fill a roll? I usually need at least 3 of them.
I just use 2. But, did you know that each "sheet" or whatever you want to call the frozen serving is actually 2 pieces? It takes skill, but I always split them while cook, so I have 4 single layers. Chop it up, fills up quite nicely.

I'm shocked there's nothing added to them. Hell, I may go buy some now.

Also shocked about the sodium. Thought that would be through the roof.

Hell, they're practically good for you!

Same ingredient as pink slime

I watch what I eat to the extent that subs are just an occasional treat type thing. I'm not spending the indulgence on Steak-Umms. NAY.

ETA: I practically survived on them for stretches in college.
