The Return of the Desert Island Jukebox Draft - Drop in a quarter (3 Viewers)

The purity of this is unsettling. I just love the original too much not to.

Sampled:

Round 32.xx

Artist: Santigold ft. Spank Rock

Song: Shove It

Year: 2008

Sampler:

Round 33.xx

Artist: Jay-Z

Song: Brooklyn Go Hard

Year: 2009

Gonna use my mulligan on the earlier Jay-Z track, I think. I think. My unwritten nerd rule was never having not two 🤔 (Also, using album release date for 2009. It's the Notorious OST)

In preparation for the last Free Play roll, I filled in missing dates for the following

Tell Me Why Our Love Has Gone Cold     Willie Hutch
Stay Fly    Three 6 Mafia ft. Young Buck and 8 Ball & G

I used Wikipedia dates.  Please feel free to change on the sheet if you're using different years
Nailed both. 1973 and 2005.

Wrong thread, don't care

You can do a lot with four American dollars (no matter how much)
You can do a lot with four American dollars (you get to have)
You can do a lot with four American dollars (you will still die)
You can do a lot with four American dollars (and that's the only fact)

Great insight. I was born in '82 so by the time I came up, MTV was still cool but was more aligned with the charts...at least I think
A big change happened in 1990-ish when charts started going by Soundscan, which reflected what people were actually buying/listening to, instead of by reports from retailers and radio stations, which could be fudged, to say the least. Nobody outside the country audience heard of Garth Brooks until Soundscan happened and it turned out he had by far the most popular album in the nation.

yeah, seriously ...i've got several top one-hit wonders that have all have a handful of semi-hits in those years

I recall seeing the pope
Pontiac 1987
Money changing between hands
Outside the Silverdome
Afterwords a riot broke
Old folks turned brutish
Trampling their way out the gates
Towards heaven

I'm trying but the new Protomartyr album and I haven't connected yet

The old Windsor humming
Across the river
From the U.S. of A
Saying,
"Everything's fine,
Everything's fine, everything's fine, everything's fine"

It says want want want want want what you are given
Need need need need need what you'll never have
Never have
And never will

The town this is (mostly) written about, Omemee, is 15 minutes from my house. It is a very rough, poor, very "rural" little town these days.
I always figured North Ontario meant something on the Hudson Bay coast near the Arctic Circle
Well to the resentment of many many many many Canadians, the center of Canada, and therefore Ontario is often regarded as Toronto, so north really just means north of there. Neil has admitted the song is about Omemee, which is not really Northern Ontario at all, but is north of Toronto, so it counts.

I think Toronto is amazing and by any measure is the primary engine that drives the country, so I'm fine with it.

I thought it sent me wild, but then realized I only had two songs written down for this year, one of which I already took and one of which someone else did.  Hmph.
Hmph. That sucks. I think mine just freed up a bizarre love triangle of years, provided I make the next two picks in proper order. The seventies wound up being probably the most heavily sampled decade, with Stax and some other soul labels taking the lead here. Not a ton of Motown, who I think guards their rights zealously.

Are you not doing anyone who influenced the Boss?
Yeah, I've done 4 or 5 of them but others don't fit into the mix as well as his contemporaries and followers.

I'm still good to close this out but something in the 78-82 range would have been better if I was a cheat.

Could have used an '85 free play

Oh, when I look back now
That summer seemed to last forever
And if I had the choice
Yeah, I'd always wanna be there
Those were the best days of my life

I have Adams on my list but don't think he'll make it into the final box.

He's kind of a lesser, poppier Boss but they went to the same tailor for a while.

I deleted all my backup '71 songs. I drafted Famous Blue Raincoat there, so no complaints but I feel like I had a few lined up.
Peak Anne Murray era
If you could read my mind Eeph
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
About a draft that I didn't plan well
NV was parked, in a fortress strong
With chains upon his feet
You know that ghost is me
And now you know I was set free
This Lightfoot song, I wish belonged to me

And I was a Slytherin. No shame in that game.
I don't mess with the dice

The hand of fate is on me now
It pick me up and knock me down
I'm on the run, I'm prison bound
The hand of fate is heavy now
I killed a man, I'm highway bound
The wheel of fortune keeps turning round
Turning round, turning round
I should have known it was a one horse town
