Looking for a new game. Should I pick up Fallout 3? I've had my eye on it for a while, but part of my concern is that I haven't played the first two. Does that affect the experience at all?

Best game ever. I never played the first 2.Another dimension of nerdery.

Whenever I hear you guys talk about these games I feel like I'm seriously missing out, but I bought an Xbox and have tried playing Bioshock, Fallout 3, etc... I can't get into them for more than a few minutes before I start feeling like I'd rather be doing something else. I've decided to sell the thing as it's just collecting dust.

I can appreciate these games as landmarks in narrative design but I don't have the time or patience to play a 20+ hour game anymore. If I can fit a game of FIFA or a 5 lap race in, it's a pretty good session for me.

It took me well over a year to complete the main story line in Oblivion. I'm lucky if I get 2 hours on a Saturday night these days, but I'll admit I was up til 4 or 5 some mornings playing that game.It took me a while to get into Fallout 3, and when I finally did I had a hard time staying interested. Basically the same engine as Oblivion, but set in a "modern" world.

I've tried getting into Orange Box, Grand Theft Auto, and some other games, but just don't have the time/patience anymore.

Really? I like Team Fortress 2 because most of the goons are off playing MW2 or Gears or whatever the best new game is. I didn't finish Half Life or any of the other games, but I play TF2 quite a bit. I only play 2fort, so if you put me on another map I'd probably suck, but this old fart does pretty well.

When the final mixes come I probably will. Don't really have time for a good analysis on them now, who knows maybe some of it will grow on me, but for now when I sneak preview it, if it's synthesized sounding drums and/or synthesized keyboards as the dominant driving music I simply move on. Not my bag. I did kind of like the Thermals and the !!!s among the bands I've never really heard before (and plan on checking out more) but bands like Killers, Radiohead, Eminem, LCD and others I already knew I didn't like and the selections have done nothing to change my mind thus far. I like White Stripes, Strokes, and a little Arcade Fire for some reason. However, when the mixes come out, a lot of them will be structured to where a song "fits" into the mix and I may like it. I still listen to stuff from the 90s draft that I didn't previously, on a daily basis. It just amazes me how much of the top thus far is inorganic, electronic music and just reinforces my opinion that the 00s was not my favorite decade for music.eta: At least RH sounds like a band making music, not a computer geek playing with a giant Casio keyboard. Don't care for them, but I can respect them for their craft.

Yeah, you can basically just skip my mix entirely then. It's only going to get worse. My personal tastes are all over the place and there's no way I could tie them all together in a coherent mix, so I've decided to highlight interesting electronic and experimental music that might otherwise get overlooked in this draft. That said...3.03 Four Tet - Parks 6:0381:46 of casio geekery left to go.

Yeah, he's going to absolutely HATE my mix. If Radiohead and The Killers are too electronic for him, it's only going to get waaaaaaaaaaay worse. But then again, I'm drafting for myself, and I don't really care if other people hate it. A lot of the traditional indie bands aren't my style, just like the synthesized drums and techno/house music aren't his style. Not going to spotlight one of the bands I'm targeting, but I think I rated a certain album #2 overall with 27 points in the 2008 album poll, and the album didn't get a single vote from the other 24 people in it. I like to see what other people are listening to and find stuff that I may have missed, not to hate on other people for their "garbage" musical tastes, if you will. These polls/drafts are great for that.
