CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Then please allow me. I just read these posts from yesterday.Albini has described the song as an extended metaphor for getting what one has always wanted, but under circumstances that make it unenjoyable.

The song's narrator is the last man alive on Earth. He has always wanted to be a broadcaster and can finally fulfill his ambition.

The odd, disintegrating rhythm whacked out primitively on Trainer's snare drum and Weston's repetitive 2 chord line simultaneously evoke feelings of loneliness and urgency while belying the narrator's fake-professional DJ-speak ("This is the sound of modern moonlight!" "Signing off for Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea . . ."). The song briefly coalesces around the "choruses" as the narrator becomes increasingly aware of his condition and the tension created is released in howls ("Can you hear me now!? CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?")--but falls apart again as the narrator realizes that his ambition is meaningless, that he is alone on Earth, that radio has come to an end.

This kind of dramatic irony isn't new to Shellac--they've mined similar territory in "The Billiard Player Song", "Squirrel Song", and "Canaveral"--but "The End of Radio" is the most complete realization of those ideas. Musically, the song is fascinating to me because it barely functions as a "song". Held together by a simple bass line and some arythmic thwacking, it creates all of the anxiety and tension/release the more "difficult" or technically accomplished playing. It is kind of incredible to me that a drummer as amazing as Todd Trainer can play that intentionally awkwardly.

The song is best experienced live, I think.

I've been following along (though a few pages behind) and I've been forcing myself to listen to every song drafted in it's entirety. It's been pretty fun because I am hearing some new stuff that I like and will want to explore further, and I'm also hearing some stuff I really don't like which makes me wonder about the person that selected it as the best of the 00s.

As I've been listening, I've been making short comments on the songs and ranking them according to my favorites. Of course, this is all a matter of taste, but you may find this entertaining. At the very least you'll enjoy the youtube comments I've read and included occasionally.

So, without further ado, here are my rankings and comments for the first two rounds:
