*** 2013 Oakland Raiders thread *** (1 Viewer)

After the offense actually putting up some points for a change, I can't see how they don't continue with McGloin. Dude looked sharp enough to me. No happy feet either.

And the D played toughest when they needed too. Not sure why the blitzed Keenum like crazy and then stopped when Schaub was at the helm. Either way, very nice win for the Raiders.

A win on the road was a pleasant surprise and shows that Allen still has this team competing. We have matched last year win total with 6 games left. It would not surprise me if they get another W or two, but as long as the team keeps competing it will be progress.

This game might be more of a reality check on Pryor’s limitations than an endorsement of McGloin’s play. The team had it’s highest point total output of the season, but more interesting was the play calling late in the game. The Raider’s needed to sustain a drive in a critical series in the 4th quarter and let McGloin throw the ball deep. I cannot recall the staff allowing Pryor the same liberty, which is more an indication of Pryor’s limitations IMO.

McGloin got the ball out of his hand quickly, had good field vision and moved around the pocket nicely. He may not be our answer at QB, but he definitely has ability as a backup, which solves another need.

The staff was stubborn with the run this week and it paid off. They even had some sets where Watkins played TE. Unfortunately Watkins may been injured again. The rook has to keep his feet moving to avoid getting rolled up. Hopefully he learns his lesson.

The defense continues to play strong and create opportunities for the offense. Jenkins showed up this week. Burnett, Sims and Roach have been solid FA signings and should be rewarded with new contracts. Sio has started to flash his open field ability. I would also be in favor of bring Woodson back as a player/coach. The oold man is still making plays and his presence is underestimated IMO.

For an undrafted rookie QB getting his first start I came away very impressed with the "Scranton Scrapper" Matt McGloin. He moved around in the pocket nice and didn't panic. He threw a nice ball with some zip on it. McGloin had a stat line of 18/32 197 yards, 3 TD's, 0 Int's. If it wasn't for the dropped balls he would have had a stat line closer too, 22/32 260 yards, 3TD's, 0 Int's with the upside of more because it seemed like a lot of the dropped balls came on 3rd down conversions.

I also want to give a shout out to Jennings. He has played amazing the past 3 weeks as the Raiders starting RB. He has shown us that it's not all the offensive lines fault that McFadden coudn't get the job done, its McFadden himself.

Also finally the defense deserves some recognition as well. In the 4th qtr the defense held the Texans to two field goals when they were in the red zone 3 different times.

re: nice zip on McGloin's passes...

When Reese had one of his RARE drops on a short/mid pass, I couldn't help think that Reese was surprised with how quickly the pass got to him.

I liked what I saw from McGloin for sure. I think we start him the rest of the way.

Very pleased with McGloin's performance. Honestly, I thought he'd struggle on the road against a good defense. He gets an "attaboy" from me. Jennings has been a huge surprise. I didn't see that coming. Must be the hyperbaric chamber he sleeps in. Coach Allen has them competing, and that's all I really wanted as an objective this year.

Did Pryor regress over his last few starts? Sure he did. But I also think he wasn't physically right especially after that Chiefs game, where he got mauled for 10 sacks. He had that one nice run against Pittsburgh, but he appears to need to be at or close to 100% healthy to acheive his A-game. I'm not ready to throw the towel in on Pryor, but until he's proving himself to be the most athletic man on the team, it's time to ride out as many games as we can with McGloin.

I think it's hilarious to see the Sunday Night Football graphic with the Raiders "in the hunt" for the playoffs at 4-6. Playoffs? Playoffs? !!!! ?

They easily surpassed my expectations. This team is playing for next year, good to remind ourselves of this truth from time to time. I like McGloin, in the same way I liked Gradkowski. Injected some life into the offense. But not a franchise savior. Pryor could be if we don't give up on him too soon. Or maybe the draft will be the answer. If Pryor's knees keep him limited, they need to shut him down. I admit, as a guilty pleasure, I can't wait to see a healthy Pryor get back on the horse again. The upside is undeniable.

We are of like minds. Regardless of Pryor's health I do not think we get a true read on him, or McGloin for that matter, until we upgrade out WR position. Far too many drops, far too few big plays. One interesting development with McGloin under center was the emergence of Rivera.

Has anyone else noticed the play of TJones on special teams? He has some nice return skills and always seems to be in on the tackle on the punt unit.

Taiwan Jones is a great special teams player. He was really good last year too as a gunner.

I guess I missed that last year. He is really jumping off the screen this year. And it appears the Raiders are going to let him be more aggressive in returning kicks. He took one out about 9 yards deep in the Texan game. I wonder if he can field punts? Ford hasn't offer the same explosiveness he showed his rookie season.

Not to defend Allen, but I don't know how you call the defense any more or less passive than that. Fitz showed he wasn't afraid of taking off and running up the middle, the rush was doing its job of containing the edges so CJ never really got going outside. He burned us late up the middle, but the strategy worked. The secondary has been running on fumes without Jenkins, and while it seemed like Woodson was everywhere, he couldn't be in on that last throw to Wright. It hurt to lose like that. Really felt like we would at least force OT. Sucks, but Allen can't win with the talent as thin as it is.

seabass making me right, more and more. wish we'd signed some youngster for nothing, so as to have more cap space. 'cause we need it!

Nonsense. what was that capspace going to be used for? Name some names, some specific upgrades we'd have got for that capspace. I'll hang up and listen.

didn't read game thread but woulda been happy to see Woodson on Wright at end of game. At least Woodson competes - Porter completely gave up on TD when covering Ten's #1 WR.

Not disagreeing with your take, but you have to admit that Seabass has struggled this year. Today he missed two FGs that are normally money for him.

I'm talking in generalities. We dumped lechler, I think we should have dumped sea bass as well. The numbers don't make sense to keep sea bass. I'm trying to make the argument make sense from a $$$ standpoint. It's weak, especially since we have a lot of cap space next year with or without sea bass. But I just don't see the NEED to retain a guy that costs the max for his position and is merely average+ for his slot.

Janikowski has been sucking this year. You can't dispute that. He is the highest paid kicker in the league he should act like it and make the FG's he should be making. If he made those 2 FG's we win today.

I'll readily agree with all of you that Jano has had a down year. Maybe he misses Shane. Heck I don't know what's up with him these days. It's like his kicking form is all off. He still has the cannon of a leg. For instance, he booted one of his FG's, the 48 yarder IIRC, through the uprights like a heat sinking missle. But it could have been easily blocked, barely clearing the scrum at the LOS and the crossbar on a frozen rope. The other misses where shanks like a bad golf swing. Nothing seems consistent about his kicks. He's had way too many good years to dump on him now in hindsight. If there was some indicator of his falloff this season, somebody point out the post telling us that Jano had to go. It's easy to cry afterward about the overpaid bum on your roster, but it's out of context after the fact. Pinning the loss on Shane is ignoring the fact the defense had the game in their hands and could not make a stop.

Sea Bass seemed to be talking a lot after he missed today. At one point it was with King but i assume he was also talking with Condo? How long does it take to get comfortable with a new peice in that system? how long had lechler condo and sea bass been together?

shane & seabass came into the league together in 2000. condo came along in 06. Seems like forever we've had that trio. The special teams trio really are like their own special clique. Shane and Seabass were good buddies, and they coached each other well. Don't know how King affected that chemistry, but I think seabass misses shane.

i didn't want lechler to go. lechler was our best player for years. king has shown that i was wrong. seabass is in the same boat imho. and it's not after the fact for me. i said this months ago.

Allen said there is a possibility the Veldheer will play on Thursday, which should be a big boost to the offense. McGloin has apparently earned another start. He started slowly and had 4 passes knock ked down at the LOS, but he finished very strong. I noticed he was taking much deeper drops second half eliminating the deflections. I really like how he gets the ball out of his hand quickly.

Losing Jenkins really hurt us down the stretch. What also hurt us was Fitzpatrick's surprising mobility. There where 4 or 5 times when he eluded a pressure and kept drives alive. Hopefully Jenkins, Moore and Streeter can play this week. Getting Rivera back on the field woulgn't hurt either.

Local rag says Valdheer is returning this game and Barnes will move inside replacing Nix. Both moves are a huge boost for the offense. Nix has been a liability at LG and moving Barnes inside gives us more size and power at the position. The article states that the entire offensive line is healthy now, so I anticipate seeing Watson out there as well. I expect to see him playing both T and TE in power formations.

I expect the offense to be stubborn with the run with the return of JV which will suit our oline better and keep the ball away from the Cowboys. Rivera is also expected to return which will help the Raiders attack the middle of the field when the Cowboys are in a cover 2.

Jenkins is expected to play, which is understandable, given he is motivated to show up his former team.

Just play a competitive game guys!

I'm hoping for more than just a competitive game. Finally we get to see what our O-line would have looked like from way back in the preseason when we all held our hopes that we could have one of the better lines in football. Since then, the running list of injuries made it look like a bad joke in terms of the street free agents we were bringing in. To their credit, for the most part, they played fairly well, not a complete disaster anyway. Not good either, just better than I expected.

I know we all pretty much have given up on DMAC, but I'm hoping he can come in and spell Jennings and break off a couple of gashing runs up the middle, with our improved line. And I'm a Jennings owner, but who cares right? Just win baby!

It will be nice to see how the offensive line does this week.

I read that Barnes went to the coaches and volunteered to play guard if they needed him too.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of wildcat plays with Pryor in the game this week.

As pleasantly surprised as I am with the raiders performance this year so far...

Jeez, the draft...dude who almost died in practice is our first rounder. Then an undrafted QB beats out our 4th Round QB, who we then drop outright....

Thank goodness our one year rentals a playing their hearts out.

what on earth did/do people see in Matt Flynn? That gb/det game was brutal to watch.

And why do we not have Taiwan jones returning punts? What brain trust decides, "ford fumbles too much, let's put a guy back there that's never fielded a punt in th NFL".

This team still has too many QUITTERS.

I actually love the effort. I think the team just gets exposed as games wear on.

"On paper" we shouldn't even be competitive with Dallas. Long term, we need 2 defensive tackles, one defensive end, two linebackers, two more corners, and two safeties. And that's just the defense.

I'm a fan of this coaching staff.

No point in raising my blood pressure anymore. This bunch ain't making the playoffs. Might as well get the best draft pick possible.

I hate to think it, but I do as well.

The QB thing to me is everything. Until we get that spot sorted, nothing everything else is just window dressing. Wonder what everyone thinks about Manziel. I don't watch any college football, so I don't know.

I actually like Derek Carr. I know start the David Carr comparisons now since they are brothers and all. However, If the Raiders are picking around the 8-10 range I think that is about where Derek Carr will go.

Mock drafts have 4 guys going in the 1st at least. Going to be interesting.

Just went to the Fresno/State game and got a up close and personal with Carr and Fowles. Both QBs are better at their level than any QBs on our current roster at the NFL level. Whether Carr and Fales can make the jump is the $1K question. Carr would be the prototypical Al Davis pick. A big, strong armed QB with surprising mobility. I actually came away more impressed with Fales. He keeps his eyes up field and reads defenses like a book. He checked down to his third receiver multiple times, which I think is extremely hard to teach. I suspect there will be some very good QB options in the later rounds of the draft, with Fales being the mayor of that town.
