2014 Oakland Raiders Regular Season Thread (2 Viewers)

Well I guess they are going all in, makes the decision to waste a draft pick on Schaub even more glaringly stupid. That's two horrible QB decisions in two years, here's to hoping for Raider fans that the third time ( :drive: ) is the charm.

On the road vs Jets is no joke, but this is pretty exciting to see.

#starttheCarr
Their pass rush and blitz packages will definitely be very tough, but their secondary looks bad. I am always excited for the first game, but Carr over Schaub bumps it up a notch.

I went back and watched the Seattle game AFTER reading all the reports/coverage, and was impressed with how Carr played. He had zip on his passes, made some nice throws (also a few bad one bad ones). Sure there were some good bounces that went the Raiders way and maybe Seattle wasn't amped up for their 4th preseason game, but it was night and day from what we've gotten from Shaub so far this preseason.

#StartTheCarr

Seriously? Does Barnes have some dirty info on the staff that forces them to start him? Watson did fine in preseason and there is no reason for Barnes to start over him. This is a step backwards IMO. Like I said previously, the day that Barnes isn't starting for the Raiders will mark a step in the right direction.

I liked Watson in the preseason as well, I wonder if it's in the name of a stabilizing vet who might be better than Watson right this second, to protect the shiny new Carr. Otherwise, I am not sure. If Watson isn't starting at some point, I will be surprised.

Austin Howard quietly has looked very good this summer, and Jelly had some nice moments in the Seattle game. He looks a lot like Grady Jackson to me.

There was a recent poll of NFL players, and Oakland was listed as least desirable place to play. Not surprising, and that thinking is a big reason why I liked the short term contracts for 30-year-old vets. We had a ton of cap room, and would have had to pay through the nose for a top vet.

I am really hoping the team can win 7 this year, and Carr looks good. Going into next offseason, looks like 60+ mill in cap room again, and that's assuming we don't bounce an Antonio Smith, or a Lamar Woodley, thus creating more room. If the team is headed in the right direction, hopefully we'll be able to corral free agents for market value.

Caught something on the NFL Insiders just now. They were talking about Carr, and the guy from the Senior Bowl was there, and said his experience was Carr was this: First one to register when invited, worked after practice every day (which he said he had never seen--that blows me away), and requested Jalen Saunders to switch teams, so he would have a familiar WR to play with. Really interesting.

Derek Carr, QB, Raiders
Owned in 4 percent of Yahoo leagues

In the past couple years, the bungling Raiders have traded for Matt Flynn, drafted Tyler Wilson and traded for Matt Schaub. They finally made a good decision Monday, using Schaub’s “sore elbow” as an excuse to name Derek Carr their starter. It was obvious to anyone with two eyes that Schaub was done last year when he was benched for Case Keenum, but better late than never for Oakland. However, let’s not go overboard on Carr. In a normal organization, he’d be a developmental prospect that could sit and learn. Our Evan Silva described Carr’s arm as “Cutlerian,” but also noted mechanical issues and struggles when under pressure as he came out of Fresno State. Even against a rancid Jets secondary, I’d keep expectations in the bottom-barrel QB2 range for Carr.

Recommendation: Should be owned in 14-team leagues as a backup

The Raiders kept Denarius Moore and other receivers on the final roster over former Brown Greg Little because, coach Dennis Allen said, fourth-year veteran Moore … regressed.
“D-Mo, I think, has really kind of gotten back to where he was maybe a couple of years ago when we first got here,” Allen said. “I saw a different demeanor out of Denarius Moore this year and he’s been a lot more consistent. I think he’s beginning to take that next step, which is really a positive sign.”
Moore caught two touchdown passes from rookie Derek Carr in the preseason finale Thursday to loudly cap off a consistent preseason.
“I came in here this year with the mindset that I am not going to try and control things that I really can’t control,” Moore said. “Just catch the pass. That’s something that I can control.”
Moore had 618 yards and five touchdowns in 13 games his rookie year, then 576 yards in his first eight games with Allen’s staff in 2012. But he has flashed hot and cold since.
“I was worried about being the go-to guy, building up that pressure on myself when I didn’t have to,” Moore said.
While the Raiders were intrigued by Little’s big-play ability, Allen said they also kept Brice Butler over him because he was more consistent, and Andre Holmes because he is also a key special-teams player.

After the Seahawks game, Carr spoke glowingly of Moore and joked to him why aren't you in the game all the time? Of all the receivers if would appear Carr has the best early rapport with Moore. Moore will likely still be a boom or bust type of a player but right now he seems to have the most upside amongst the Raiders receivers with Carr at the helm. James Jones played sparingly in the preseason and might not really be on the same page as Carr at least not yet. If I had to take a flyer on a raiders receiver in week one I think I'd go with Moore even if his snap count will be a bit limited. In my opinion the Raiders receiver corps needs to be re-evaluated on a weekly basis early on the season.

I have been very critical of Moore the past couple of seasons. However, if what they say is true that Moore has matured and is taking care of business now then I don't see why he can't be a very good WR for the Raiders.

I appreciate this insight, but seriously, if it's all true, that seems like some sensitive game planning info that this guy is leaking to the Twittersphere. Why would the team feed him this stuff knowing he'd broadcast it?

While I agree with you to some extent, esp. about spelling out the actual trick plays and where on the field they will use them, in general I don't think that NFL gameplanners will be shocked by a lot of this. The Jets should expect Carr to target a rookie backfielder just as much as the Raiders know they will be seeing some tricky blitz packages from Rex Ryan to unbalance Carr.

Anybody want to chime in with win-loss predictions on the year? Here's mine:

at NY Jets L
HOUSTON W
at New England L
MIAMI (London) W
BYE WEEK
SAN DIEGO W
ARIZONA W
at Cleveland W
at Seattle L
DENVER L
at San Diego L
KANSAS CITY L
at St. Louis L
SAN FRANCISCO L
at Kansas City L
BUFFALO W
at Denver L
6-10

Can't believe I have 'em at 5-2 to start the season. But I wouldn't be surprised to see 'em be 2-5 whether Carr is the starter and taking his rookie lumps or Schaub is the starter and pushing the ball out there.

Maybe this will still happen, but I was really hoping they would extend Wisniewski before this season got underway. Wishful thinking I guess, but it seems like the right time to look forward contractually beyond 2014.

I agree, this is rehashing common expectations based on personnel. Earlier in the week Rex Ryan commented on how they were not going to be surprised by the Wildcat. Ground breaking stuff, heheh. I can't believe he cracked that code given Sparano on the staff and McFadden having a better QB rating than Geno Smith.

Ready to get this going. I think the Raiders are going to get the job done today. Run the ball, take advantage with some shots down the field vs their poor corners and pressure Geno. I am not in love with the Raiders corners so pressure on Geno is of utmost importance.

Raiders 24

Jets 17

Raiders have been 0-13 on the east coast for the last three years I believe, plus starting rookie Carr does not bode well for them.

Yes the secondary of the JETS is terrible going into this first game, but their D-line is pretty good so I expect Carr to be flushed out of the pocket on a regular basis, which is not what he is good at (yet?).

The only positive I have seen has been Carr and D.Moore on the deep ball, so there is a chance we can beat their secondary, if Carr has the time to throw.

Our D is piece meal at best and I expect the JETS to run alot to get their ground game going. If we can stuff the run, get pressure and containment on Geno, we got a shot.

The pessimist in me says the final to be NYJ 20 - OAK 13 ...

Three "Eeeek!!!!!" bits from Jerry McDonald about how the Jets have recently handled rookie QBs:

"The wreckage of rookies includes Andrew Luck, who was 22 of 44, threw two interceptions, was sacked four times and lost 35-9 in 2012.

In his first game against the Jets last season, Buffalo quarterback E.J. Manuel was sacked eight times in a 27-20 defeat.

In 2009, Tampa Bay’s Josh Freeman was 14 of 33, threw three interceptions, was sacked three times and fell 26-3."

Jets 31, Raiders 13

Bloom was joking on The Audible about how this would be an ugly 6-3 (or 6-2!) game. I don't see that at all. I think both QBs will take advantage of awful secondaries. Our OL has to sack up and give Carr time to get the ball downfield though.

Home alone, here in NYC, no way I can be among the masses today.

Stream of consciousness thoughts:

Good move by the coaching staff so far. Short passes on first down. Carr has put every pass in the right spot as far as I can see. Running game need to start gashing some people. Gabe Jackson looks like he's gonna be here 12 years, and I think MJD might just hop in his belly button like a baby kangaroo on his next carry.

No pass rush so far. We got lucky that first drive, with a holding call. Jets were marching.

Geno looks like the real deal to me.

Woodson made an amazing pick. INT in 17 straight years. My God.

Jets miscues keeping Raiders in this.

On that fumble, it was pass rush by Mack, and Sio Moore and TJ Carrie popped the ball loose. 'Building through the draft', fellas.

Can't believe how awful the defensive line has looked...

I agree they need to get the running game working to open up some deep shots for Carr.

I think we're watching the definition of "bend but don't break."

But if we can't get anything going on offense, it won't matter anyway.
