2015 Oakland Raiders Thread (1 Viewer)

Honestly, I wasn't surprised we beat down the Chargers in first half. Our defense has been playing a lot better and I think it has to do mostly with coaching, because the personnel is basically the same with a few tweaks. Of course, I didn't predict this to not jinx them, but I have seen the Chargers a lot this year, and I just think we are better. Their season is over. We got some work to do. I don't think the Jets will be an easy game at all. Their defense just got schooled by the Patriots despite shutting down the Pats run game. It's another game that sets up for the defense to carry the game for us, and the offense has to do just enough to get points on the board and put pressure on the Jets O. We're going into November and the season isn't over for us. :) This is so weird, I can't remember how long it's been that I could say that but maybe it's my memory is fading.

Wow what a half. I have to give Jack and the staff a lot of credit. Very impressive performance coming off the bye shows they put in good work.
Great comment. I can't count how many times we've come out of bye weeks in the past and laid a huge turd, which is a huge sign of a FUBAR organization top to bottom. This is the anti-week 1 result I am looking for. Extremely happy, and building up some big hope for the future.

Great to see a competive product on the field. Carr is showing great growth and the WRs are solid. Looks like Crabs is gonna get a major raise if he continues on this pace. They have to get Penn u dear control. Two very stupid penalties that cost the another TD and FG. Also, they got to clean up that prevent defense. Rushing 3 never works.

Good bump for Page 8, MassRaider, and good analysis here, RF. I was thinking the Raiders would be competitive in the first half, but honestly thought this was going to be another game where the Raiders fall apart in the second half and play down to a cruddy opponent. Would never have predicted they would be so purely dominant -- punching mouths, putting up points, and not looking back.

I also think you are right about the D needing to step up, especially against the run, forcing Fitzpatrick to be one-dimensional. Jets can still be dangerous, but would be good to see the Raiders build from their winning gameplan vs the Chargers with schemes designed to handle the Jets' defensive pressure, and contain Ivory.

Love the bolded part. So true.

Berman mentioned at MNF halftime:

Cooper first rookie with three 100+ yard receiving games in first six, since TE Mike Ditka over a half century ago, in 1961 (OBJ just missed last year).

Walford and Rivera should be big part of the gameplan this week. Revis will probably be shagging Cooper. Rush defense is very strong.

Short passing game all day long. Helu/Walford/Reece/Crabs. Let's make David Harris and Calvin Pryor cover people.

I actually think this matchup isn't awful for the Raiders this week.

Any one else impressed by Cooper going up high to get that deep pass? I thought that was supposed to be a weakness of his (not sure where i heard that though). Looks like he has been working hard at his weaknesses as much as his strengths.

I keep imagining what the defense would look like if Aldon Smith returns to his All-Pro form in the second half of this season.

That seems to be the most logical game script. I am most interested in how the oline responds to the challenge. They have been doing a great job protecting Carr thus far. It will also be interesting to how the DBs respond to the challenge of covering Marshall and Decker. The group seems to be making strides. They got a shot if they limit turnovers and create some off the Jets.

Cooper is uncoverable so far

I think the play action, quick passing game plan has really helped out the O-line and kept Carr upright. I believe he was only sacked once last week. And the Chargers have been getting to the QBs in recent weeks. So I bet we see Musgrave stick to a similar game plan against the Jets.

It seems like Carr is most comfortable in the short, rhythm passing game. He hasn't shown Rivers/Favre gunslinger qualities. Not yet, anyway. He has the arm.

And that sounds fine with me. Get the ball to the playmakers and let them, or the design of the play, break the big plays. There's no DeSean Jackson on this team anyway. I never was worried about Carr being afraid to throw it deep, I just think that right now, the short, intermediate stuff is his bread and butter. And he's so accurate, it works.

I hope we see a lot of the two TE sets. With any combo, come to think of it. If we line up with Coop, Crabs, Clive, and Smith, they have to respect the run, and play action from there could be deadly. The improvement in this position has been big. All three TEs are useful, and it's been a loooong time since that could be said. You have to be excited about what they are saying about Walford. People are gushing.

I'm hoping a 3rd WR shows himself. I don't care who. Crabs is a free agent, and not a kid. Although I'm less worried about that because of how young everyone else is. I have to think he'll re-sign, he's found a home, and I doubt he'll get a much better offer elsewhere.

We had a lot of calls go against us that were BS, and the announcers were saying as much. Weird to see that happen in a game that was a blowout. Normally, if the Raiders don't get the calls, they lose badly. Different team.

I'm glad Hayden had a nice game. Not a great game, but a nice one. He may never be a stud, but I think he's definitely a starter. High draft pick, maybe not a hit, but not a bust. And man, if you look at that draft, that's a win. Bust city. If we can add a legit CB this offseason, and Carrie/Hayden are 2/3 in some fashion, that sounds good.

Thinking about the offseason, if this team winds up 8-8, which sounds possible, free agency is going to feel a lot different. Lot of money to spend, and now considered an up and coming team. 70 mill in cap space for 2016, fellas. Dang.

Oakland Raiders starting safety Nate Allen should be back on the playing field within three weeks barring an unexpected setback.

His 21-day window to be activated to the 53-man roster started Tuesday. Allen, a free-agent signing from Philadelphia, suffered a knee injury in Week 1. He was put on the injured reserve with the designation to return. He began to work Tuesday, and the Raiders must activate him in the next three weeks. TJ Carrie is expected to move back to cornerback when Allen returns.

In other Raiders’ notes:

  • Safety Tevin McDonald cleared waivers and returned to the practice squad. According to league transactions, safety Keenan Lambert was placed on the injured list. Linebacker Korey Toomer replaced him on the injured list.
  • Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie told reporters that linebackerNeiron Ball could be out a few weeks with a knee injury.

ALAMEDA -- Finally, Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie feels as if he's in a fair fight.

His team is 3-3, and while that's a long way from the top of the NFL food chain, it's a significant upgrade from the 11-37 record during his first three seasons in charge of the Raiders' football operation.

"You knew you had to take the punches,'' McKenzie told beat writers Tuesday in his first public comments since training camp. "That's just the way it goes, especially when you're not winning. The key was really looking at the big picture, not to get so down on myself and the team and knowing what was ahead.

"I'm used to being in the playoffs. I haven't been since I've been here. That's the goal. Let's get to the playoffs and it's a new season and then let's try to get to the Super Bowl ... we can go out every Sunday and it seems like we can compete to win games. It's gratifying.''

During a 35-minute interview, McKenzie touched on several subjects including the performance of coach Jack Del Rio, the progress of quarterback Derek Carr, a free agent class that has so far been crucial to a turnaround, what appears to be another solid draft class led by wide receiver and No. 4 overall draft pick Amari Cooper and a remarkable performance from 39-year-old safety Charles Woodson.

Some highlights:

  • Del Rio, McKenzie said, has been thorough and decisive in building on his previous eight-plus seasons in charge with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 through 2011. Del Rio spent the last three season as defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos.

"Bottom line, he's done it before, so that's really helped him seeing things and being able to communicate,'' McKenzie said. "I think that's played a big part in the way he's approached this season. It's been good _ really good.''
  • The quantum leap from rookie starting quarterback to cornerstone of the franchise has worked out as planned with Carr.

"I'm never surprised with that guy,'' McKenzie said. "He wants it bad. He's going to find a way to get it done. Even if he slips and has a bad game, or makes a bad play, he'll bounce back. That's just him. This is his second year, second system. Hopefully he can build on that, keep him in the same system.''
  • Although a believer in building through the draft, the Raiders got competitive in a hurry in large part because of the unrestricted free agent class that included center Rodney Hudson, wide receiver Michael Crabtree, defensive tackle Dan Williams and linebacker Malcolm Smith -- all standout players through six games.

"Those guys have not only produced on the field, but they're really good leaders and locker room guys,'' McKenzie said. "So the guys gravitate toward each other. They're meshing. When you get a lot of new, moving parts, to get them to mesh, you've got to get the right kind of people.''
  • Cooper, who has 33 receptions for 519 yards, has been as good as advertised.

"If you watch the guy play live, watch him practice, interview him, he's a pro-mentality guy,'' McKenzie said. "You don't have to worry about nothing when he leaves this building. He's going to study. He's going to know what to do."

Second-round pick Mario Edwards Jr. has displayed power and potential in increased playing time of late, and tight end Clive Walford and linebacker Neiron Ball have made immediate contributions.

(Ball sustained a knee injury against San Diego that is not season-ending. He could miss four games or more).
  • Woodson, at age 39, not only is a an NFL co-leader with four interceptions, but serving as an inspiration to every young player on the roster.

"He's one of those guys, you just set him off to the side. He's special,'' McKenzie said. "You count on him. Whatever he's lost, he's going to make up for some kind of way. He is the true definition of a football player.''
  • Linebacker Aldon Smith, signed after being cut from the 49ers following the latest in a string of issues involving alcohol, has played well and McKenzie said he is a part of the long-term plan.

"We did a lot of research on that, so when we say we're going to go ahead and go after him, we just wanted him to let him join the family and help him every kind of way that we can,'' McKenzie said. "That's what we're doing.''

Can a homer tell me why Amari Cooper is putting up near zero in the second half of games? I follow the stats and RedZone channel and my late second quarter visions of sugar plums quickly turn to ill-cooked brussels sprouts. Is Del Rio dialing it way back?

I don't really know, but teams are definitely aware of him, and maybe they take him away after he kills them in the first half. Last week was an outlier, they were in clock kill mode.

Thanks for posting this (and fantastic user name, btw). Didn't see the game. Amazing how many Raider faithful were at that game -- there is usually a good contingent that travels down the coast from the Bay Area, but at that first pick by Malcolm Smith, crowd erupted like they were at the Black Hole.Impressive beat down.
Charger fan at the game, what you saw was true. Hell, charles Woodson called for the crowd to get loud during a defensive snap. I just about lost it.

Wonder why Charger fans are not that interested in their team. The Chargers are not a terrible team and the O is fun to watch. Just watching Rivers operate would be worth the price of admission.

Apparently the waves were pumping that weekend

They hate Raider week. Lots of serious fans sell their tickets because they hate the fans that travel south for the game. It's a vicious, awesome cycle.

I was just about to post this. Something always goes down. Thankfully I ran into only the level headed drunk ones and we had some good conversations in the beer line.

That may be part of it but I think it has just as much, probably more, to do with the fact that the Chargers are legitimately trying to relocate to Los Angeles and people are kind of ###### off. Being 2-5 isn't helping either

Crabtree primarily lines up against left cornerbacks and will likely spend most of this game in Jets LCB Darrelle Revis' coverage. Pro Football Focus has charted Revis with just 14 completions allowed on 30 targeted passes this season. Crabtree is an unattractive WR3 play in a brutal matchup. ... Cooper's matchup is slightly better versus Jets RCB Antonio Cromartie, who is having a solid-if-unspectacular year. Cooper is the overall WR18 in PPR points per game. Flashing matchup-proof ability, Cooper exploded for a 5-133-1 number in a tougher draw with Chargers RCB Jason Verrett last week

I'm blown away. Don't even know how to feel. I've gotten used to getting our teeth kicked in for the past dozen years. I thought the Jets would move the ball at will, and I wasn't sure we'd have an answer if Revis locked up Cooper. Fitzpatrick getting hurt helped, of course, but he doesn't play defense. They got rolled. We killed both of their QBs. Felt like the Black Hole again. And whatever flaws the O-line might have is schemed up by Carr getting rid of the ball quickly. Still trying not to get my hopes up too much, but I knew I liked the JDR hire from Day 1. I'm glad he's rewarded the faith. This looks like a completely different football team. They are getting to the point where they expect to win. So great to see.

The line has been playing really well for two years now IMO. I am stunned that they put up so many rushing yards on that defense AND they hit them up for 300+ and 4 TDs?!?!!?! Are you kidding me?

Then again I also remember opening up 8-2 in '95 and 7-4 in '11 and cruising to 8-8 seasons both times. So I think most Raider fans are still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Honestly, my entire goal for this year is to not get beaten 52-3 by the Pats in the playoffs.

Liked seeing Autry flash. He was very active. Malcolm Smith has been so good.

Ray Ray Armstrong may be my least favorite Raider ever. Whenever he's on the field, he's either doing something stupid, or about to. A punk, who plays out of control, and doesn't fit this team's makeup at all. Cut him.

Seems like Hayden is a lot more confident. He was yapping today, which I like from CBs. Still not a Pro Bowler.

Last two games, the offense hasn't turned the ball over or fumbled in the first half. Testament to Carr and Musgrave.

Getting Nate Allen back at FS will shore up two positions, allowing Carrie to slide back to CB.

Nice day from Andre Holmes, but also had a bad drop. Up and down, that's his game.

Rod Streater, what's the deal?

Mario Edwards has shown enough to be optimistic about his future.

PLAYOFFS?!?!? Playoffs?!!? PLAYoffs!?!?!?! PlayOFFs!?!@?!@?!>

playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@!@!!111121211

What really should make people optimistic is that Carr is finally looking downfield regularly and confidently. Today marks his third game of the season with a YPA above 9 and he is now above 7.9 YPA on the season. That is huge. For that particular metric, which most people in here know I put a lot of stock in, he is actually approaching Aaron Rodgers territory. That's nuts.

I know it was against the Jets, but it's been so long since I've seen Oakland (mostly) dominate like that that I honestly didn't know how to process it. Guys, this looks like a real football team.

It's a great feeling to know the Raiders finally found a franchise QB they can build around. If Peyton retires after this season this team could very well be the division favorites next season. Beyond that, looking at the remaining 9 games they have a good shot at a wild card spot. After the Pittsburgh game next week, the next 4 are all games they should be able to win or be favored in.

Lastly, this team has a bright future, with the tons of cap space they have next season top free agents may actually want to play for the Raiders for once.

With you on the sentiment, AW, but what do you mean by the comment about the Jets? 4-2 going into the game with one of the league's most dominant defenses. Their offense is not the Patriots, but Fitzpatrick did put up enough points to keep up with Brady & Co, and Ivory, while dinged, has played solidly all season long.

This was far from a gimme. This was a huge win for the team against one of the top teams this year in the AFC, that put them over .500.

Raiders not only look like a real football team again, but -- sharing your shock -- are also actually competitive and have got back a little "Any Given Sunday."

Poise and Pride.

Anyone still not willing to get in the Carr?

2014 NFL Draft -

Bortles #2; 26 TD/25 INT.

Manziel #22; 3 TD/3 INT.

Bridgewater #32; 20 TD/17 INT.

Carr #36 36 TD/15 INT

One of these kids is not like the other, one of these kids is doing his own thing......

I guess a week is a long time for millennials.

:P

Fitzpatrick went out very early and this was Geno's first game action since last year. They also didn't have Nick Mangold. This was far from the same Jets offense that we have seen all season.

Still a big win but it could have been a much different opponent.

I hope they put some of that cap space towards keeping Crabtree and Aldon Smith.

Bridgewater #32; 20 TD/17 INT (11W 8L, 7.3 YPA - 7.3/7.2)

Carr definitely has taken the biggest jump between season 1 & 2, so far, but I don't think it is decided quite yet.

We definitely caught the Jets right: No Mangold, at home, and Fitz gets knocked out. Would it be a different outcome in NY, with Mangold, and everyone healthy? Maybe. But if so, I wanna do-over on the Bears game, but in Oakland.

Every team deals with stuff. The Jets didn't lose that game because Geno was playing. Their game is defense and running the ball. Oakland's offense put this out of reach in the first half. When you don't punt or turn the ball over in the first half of two straight games, you didn't catch any lucky breaks, you won the game. You were the better team.

Best thing about this game was the offensive domination, with Cooper being a non-factor. Take away Cooper doesn't really seem to be a viable strategy, after all.

Agree on all counts.
