2015 Oakland Raiders Thread (1 Viewer)

49ers looking for a 6th/7th rounder for Wilhoite.

If Norton doesn't convince team to do it, wonder what that says about him.

Reading the news today, and looks like Bowe and B. Marshall are on the way out in their respective cities.

Let's say the Raiders signed Cobb and another, cheaper, vet. Bowe or Marshall, Andre Johnson, whomever. Pick the one you like best, I don't wanna debate this vet or that vet. Streater gets bumped down to #3, and Holmes and Butler are around.

Let's say the draft went:

Winston

Mariota

L. Williams

So....worst case. Williams is gone, no one wants to trade up because Mariota is gone. WR is no longer a screaming need. Where would you like to see the Raiders go?

In that scenario Fowler might be the guy for me.

@MikeSilver: As for news: I'm told the Raiders are planning to have Ndamukong Suh in for a visit next week. @nflnetwork @nfl

When it comes to a contest between the Raiders and the Dolphins, [Dolphins Owner] Stephen Ross has ultimate ace in the hole — the absence of state income taxes in Florida. In California, the rate for the really rich is 13.3 percent. So if Suh signs a deal that pays him $15 million per year in California, the Golden State will withhold $1.995 million in taxes. Per year. In Florida, the Sunshine State will take the grand total of zero dollars and zero cents from Suh’s game checks.

Over the course of a seven-year deal (if Suh is there for all seven), the difference becomes $13.965 million. In other words, he’d be working nearly one full year out of seven to pay for the privilege of living and working in Califoria.

The only way the Raiders can compete with the Dolphins and $15 million per year would be to enough to get Suh to the same net after federal and state taxes. Which would be roughly $18 million per year.

Guess that's why no California teams ever sign free agents.

Yeah because that was my point. It puts California teams at a big disadvantage and that's a fact.

State taxes is a big part of the reason why Dwight Howard left the Lakers.

Apologies, shouldn't have been so snippy about it. I've thought about what you brought up, this Joel Corry article has been making the rounds. Everyone should read it.

In short, I think it's one factor. I think how important it is depends on the player and his management, and where their priorities lie.

I could definitely see it being a major factor for some players, but I think other factors could push it to the back. Another thought is that it's not really going to be a priority for the agents, and they are really controlling this. If Suh visits Miami, or Jacksonville, the teams will use that as a selling point, but other teams have different selling points.

As an example, let's say Suh came to Oakland, and I was Reggie, this would be my pitch:

New coach: We have a new coach, he wants you to anchor the line. You are gonna be playing Under in our 4 man line, and we aren't changing scheme anytime soon. That guy in Miami almost got fired once already, if the new guy runs a 3-4, they're gonna have you eating blocks for four years.

Location: Bay Area is a great place to live, and it's a quick flight to your hometown in the Pacific Northwest. By the way, if you like a big city, we gonna be the LA Raiders in two years. You may have seen our logo, in every rap video, ever.

Roster: We have the QB, the RB, the edge guy. Our young guys are better than their young guys. We aren't going to put you next to an aging Cam Wake, in front of a bunch of LB that may get cut.

Future roster: The Dolphins may be able to afford you, but what else can they afford? Hartline, Gibson, Wallace, Odrick, all gone? What kind of flexibility do they have to build around you? Our highest paid player is our right tackle, all our young studs are cheap for three more years, the bulk of your contract! We're gonna be adding to this roster the next few years, not subtracting. We have the best, absolute best, salary cap situation in the league.

Division: Every QB in our division is old. Manning has one year left, Rivers two or so. Alex Smith? We hope he stays there forever.

Agree. JDR may be a very big selling point. My perspective is that overpaying for Suh is a better direction than signing one of the lesser FA DTs because they improve two weakness with one signing: A run stuffer and pass rusher.

I still doubt that they are strong contenders. Agents are planting stuff right now, we'll see.

Heck, I'm not sure I'd be just as fine getting Knighton and Hardy for the same money.

As Bill Polian said yesterday on Sirius, we know nothing right now.
He's great, isn't he? His knowledge almost makes it worth listening to Alex Marvez cackle his way through a broadcast. Mark Dominik is excellent also. The stuff he rattles off makes it hard to believe he ever got fired.

Saints not expected to tender Tyrunn Walker as restricted free agentPosted by Josh Alper on March 6, 2015, 9:17 AM EST
Defensive tackle Tyrunn Walker didn’t see a ton of playing time for the Saints last season, but he did well with what he got by recording 19 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 306 snaps up front for New Orleans.

It looks like he’ll have a chance to parley that into a deal with a new team. Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports that the Saints aren’t planning to make a tender offer to the impending restricted free agent, although they would be open to a return at a price below the $1.54 million minimum tender.

That’s not particularly surprising, given the Saints’ cap situation calls for them to cut money rather than add it at the moment, but it also wouldn’t be terribly surprising if they don’t get that chance with a 25-year-old who could fit into a rotation for either a 3-4 or 4-3 team and showed improvement in his third season with the Saints.
This is the kind of secondary signing I'd like to see, with our cap space. Not just the splash signing. We can give a guy like this half a mill more up front, on a four year deal, and he's gonna jump on it. He was a UDFA!

If the Saints weren't in Cap Heck, they would never let a solid young rotational DT walk for such a cheap tender.

I'll just throw this in here, just in case.......

Projecting timeline for Darrelle Revis news

The headline story for the New England Patriots in free agency is the status of cornerbackDarrelle Revis. Here is a projected timeline/guide based on our sense of where things stand at this time (with the understanding that things can change in an instant):

First domino to fall. Revis is due a $12 million roster bonus (paid April 1) if he is still with the Patriots at the end of the 2014 league year. The 2015 league year officially begins at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. It would be a surprise if the Patriots pick up the option based on Revis’ $25 million cap charge. Thus, Revis is expected to be released at some point before Tuesday, where he can test the market as a free agent.
Outside chance of extension. At this point, our sense of the sides reaching a contract extension before Tuesday is a long shot. If no extension is reached, it would be a case where Revis can explore the market while keeping lines of communication open with the Patriots. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter shared his belief, on Sirius XM Mad Dog Sports Radio on Thursday, that the top suitors for Revis will ultimately be the Patriots and Jets.
Hold on for the ride. In any situation where a player heads to the open market, which is where we see Revis heading at this time, there is an aspect of unpredictability. While teams and players might have an idea of where the financial market might wind up, there are sometimes wild-cards and unexpected things that unfold. In that case, for those anxiously waiting to hear about Revis’ future in New England, our sense at this time is that it looks like a “hold-on-for-the-ride” type of situation that has some twists and turns ahead.

Davon House to hit the market:

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers are taking a wait-and-see approach with at least one of their free-agent cornerbacks.

It means Davon House will get the chance to talk with other teams.

"I think he's going to hit the market," House's agent, Kenny Zuckerman, said Friday afternoon. "There will be a lot of interest."

That does not mean House is averse to a return to the Packers, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2011, or that the Packers don't have an interest in re-signing him. It just means general manager Ted Thompson will, in part, allow the market to dictate House's value.

It's an approach he often takes with their free agents. Thompson and vice president of player finance Russ Ball no doubt have a dollar figure in mind for House's value, but if the market greatly exceeds that, they might be unlikely to get into a bidding war.

Last season, House appeared in 15 games (including playoffs) and made four starts. The knock on the 25-year-old has been his durability. In 2012, he appeared poised to win a starting job before a shoulder injury in the preseason ruined that and allowed Sam Shields to grab that spot.

Last season, House fractured his scapula in the Dec. 8 game against the Atlanta Falcons and missed the final three regular-season games before returning in the playoffs.

House played one-third of the Packers' defensive snaps last season, almost exclusively on the outside rather than in the slot. The Packers like a player of House's size, at 6-foot and 195 pounds he's their biggest cornerback, to cover big receivers on the outside. House also might be the strongest of the Packers' cornerbacks. Last season, cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt compared House's strength to that of former Packers cornerback Al Harris.

"I've coached three men that had hands like bricks: Al Harris, him, and another guy named Antoine Sharp, who you've never heard of but I coached him at Louisville," Whitt said last season. "But when they put their hands on you, it feels like bricks on you and they can redirect people. And they're fast enough."

The Packers will be looking for a new starter at one of the two outside cornerback positions if they let Tramon Williams leave. Williams, 32, also is scheduled to become a free agent.

Like all unrestricted free agents, House and his agent are free to start talking to other teams at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, but cannot sign with a new team until Tuesday. Last year, Shields hit the negotiation period as a free agent, but several hours later came to terms and returned to the Packers with a four-year, $39 million contract.

Surprising that Andre Holmes received only an original round tender. Reggie must be very confident in landing his WR targets.

I hope that's the reason.

Holmes also isn't 23 years old. He turns 27 in June. You have to assume he's peaked as a player.

I'm guessing the depth chart will include two new faces, James Jones, and Brice Butler. Holmes looks nice as a 5th WR, but if they lose him, meh.

I suppose it depends on one's view of Butler and Jones. Yes, I'm more than ok with Streater's return, but I'm a fan of neither Jones nor Butler and, if it's your belief Cobb is signed by the Raiders, to me Holmes fits far better than Jones. At no compensation for signing him it will surprise if Holmes isn't elsewhere next season.

I think Jones and Holmes both "are what they are". Jones is reliable, a word we don't get use often in regards to the WRs. In fact we had the complete opposite of reliable in Denarius last year.

Butler, now that I think about it, may be on shaky ground, as he was a hand-picked UDFA of the last staff, and we know how that goes. But he's younger, has great tools. I think he has more upside (or unknown let's call it, I hate the word upside) than Holmes. WRs don't break out at 27 years old.

Reliable? Yes, in a Streater sort of way. I just think you get more range and playmaking potential with a Cobb, Holmes, Streater, unknown rookie arsenal than you get from Cobb, Jones, Streater, unknown rookie. Plus it gets downright unpredictable and unstable with Jones, Streeter, 2 unknown rookies (although if one of the rookies is a Cooper pro ready type it's not as worrisome). That's what concerns me with the minimal tender of Holmes, particularly when cap space is so huge. The thinking must be either confidence in landing the WR targets or sufficient available depth that replacements will bring equal skills.

Sure is. Very logic and linear in his thinking. Add Kirwin to that list too. If the Raiders ever part ways with Reggie hiring Polian isn't the worst idea.

Suh possible spots, Miami, Oakland, NYG and Colts. Cobb... Per a source, "almost destined for Oakland." Raiders & D.Murray's agent will talk

DeMarco would be terrible signing considering our other needs. And I think you bolded the wrong part. Cobb ------> :excited:
Cobb is off the board, re-signing with Pack for 4 years. Maybe we will be a more appealing landing spot when he is a free agent again. Or not.

Rotoworld:

Yahoo's Charles Robinson confirms the Raiders are targeting free agent Jermaine Gresham.

Although the start of free agency is still over 48 hours away, the Raiders have already whiffed on a number of their biggest targets. That means they're going to have to overpay for a host of Greshams as they look to reach the league's spending floor. Gresham would be absent from the fantasy radar in Oakland.

Cobb back to GB.

Suh to Miami.

Julius to Jax.

Good thing we have all this cap room to "target" the likes of Jermaine Gresham and Chris Myers.

And here is me thinking that the Raiders would give Reggie McKenzie his walking papers last year. He just biding his time and waiting to spring into action at any moment.

I like the idea of signing Gresham. Great young TE to pair wit Rivera. I expect Reggie to get Knighton and then sign a bunch of lunch pail types that may not be the splashiest, but will get the job done. I'm thinking of guys like Morgan, Hudson (replaces Wiz and weakens a divisional rival), Gresham, Shorts and Cullivet. I could even see them grab someone like Wallace after he cut loose by the Fins.

I'm still optimistic but definitely do not expect anything bigger than this.
