Malcom Smith, former Super bowl MVP, fills a need at LB. Hopefully he works out better than the previous Super bowl MVPs they signed in the past (Larry Brown and Desmond Howard).

I fail to see that. Crabtree seems to have a bad attitude, questionable work ethic and you get the feeling that he is a Moss-esque "Play when I want to play" guy but he has far more talent than Jones and Streater.

I question whether he will ever get right enough in the head to put it all together but if he does his natural ability far outstrips anything on the Raiders roster right now.

We can disagree on on Crabtree's talent level, but how does having a potential malcontent at WR help Carr's development?

I guess in the same way that having a legitimate #1 WR would hurt his development.

Apparently the Raiders are about to sign Lee Smith a 27 year old road grader TE with hands of stone from Buffalo (according to Schefter).

I do consider TE a position of need, despite Rivera's potential I think they could use some help.

I expect every player that doesn't sign a big contract in the next 24 hrs will be linked to the Raiders due to their massive cap surplus. IIRC they still have a 2 year window to spend the required minimum amount under the CBA.

Malcolm Smith is hopefully a good get. Not sure anyone saw enough to say otherwise, but Norton knows him so, we'll see. Not sure I buy the MLB talk. Lofton as a 2 down MLB makes sense, he won't be getting a lot of money. Sio had hip surgery, hope is that he is back for TC, but not a guarantee. Malcolm as insurance for hjim, and as a nickel LB (with Mack at rush end) seems to make sense to me. Either way, it seems like Burris won't be seeing the field much, which is a big, big win. He's a terrible LB, he really is.

I don't know anything about Lee Smith, unless it's the Hall of Fame baseball pitcher. We had no blocking tight end, so that's a hole filled. I'd still like Gresham. We had 1 tight end, we need three. Short story, Gresham is better than at least two of our TEs.

The Knighton thing is interesting. He can't get a top offer from the two teams that know him best. Really surprising.

I'm not gonna complain about Smith's deal, till we see what he is really getting. If he has a 5 mill salary in year three, then, whatever.

To name a few. And I would not have cut Branch to not have to pay him a $1 million roster bonus. Teams can sign good players without ending up in cap hell. What good is $70 million in cap space if you don't use it? I'm not saying sign everyone, but this year there were many good players available. To not end up with a few of the really good ones with that cap space is inexcusable.

Yes, absolutely. This is like the kid at the spelling bee going silent when asked to spell RIJSTTAFEL. Do something. Anything. Overpay and front-load it so you can dump them in a year or two if they don't pan out.

Regarding DeMarco, I would like it, and am fine giving him cash up front, if we can get out in two years, but I don't think it's a must-have.

We do need another tailback, a guy to take 15+ carries, not sure it needs to be the guy that was rode hard last year. Latavius by himself is not a sure thing.

I would rather see L Murray given chance to be main guy & now we have Helu to be a 3rd down guy. I love D Murray's talent but he had around 440 touches last yr & that was behind one of best lines in league. Don't spend to spend. Get Gresham or Cameron who will really help Carr. Sign D Williams or try to un-offend Knighton. Resign McFadden as L Murray's backup - RB mkt is soft there will be guys available. RB is not the place to overspend. Biggest need is WR and ain't it a kick in the a** that Crabtree seems to be best available?

Even with Latavius and Helu in those roles, you need another back. I feel you about the touches he had last year, but if he has two good/decent seasons, it's worth it.

Overspending on DeMarco is not the smart move to make, I agree. However, this team can afford it.

Jordan Cameron not signing anywhere tells me everything I need to know about the fear teams have about the concussions. I'll take Gresham all day, I said so in last years thread. I'd be excited about Cameron, who wouldn't? But we'd be holding our breath every time he got hit.

On the other hand, this team can afford the money to take the risk.

I don't want splashes anymore - Al did that for too long. However, this year seemed like strange yr where a player like Suh was available in prime. I live in WNY so a Bills fan too - they had to overpay for Mario Williams but it also a PR move to show they could bring prime players to Buff. That's what Oak needs now. I'd much rather overpay & make a splash with Suh than D Murray. We've had to fill out roster with older vets who came for the $, now we need to pull in a prime player to wake up rest of league.

I think Bill Polian said the Raiders are cap rich and cash poor, so that may be another reason they couldn't match the contract. Dunno. I am disappointed but it is water under da bridge now.

Strange that the two teams that knew him best didn't make "competitive" bids. Maybe he has overestimated his value? Odrick isn't a done deal yet, unless I missed it, but he would be a nice addition.

Yeah I still like Harvin's ability but it seems like no one has been able to figure out how to properly utilize him for years. Not sure the Musgrave and Co are really the guys to figure him out. And he has always seemed more like utility weapon than a featured WR. Still the explosiveness he has shown is tempting even if it shows up rarely. Bowe has looked like he has been getting slower and slower the past few years. But I guess WRs have never really been featured in Andy Reid's offense so maybe he could still bring it in the right situation and he has the best pedigree of the bunch even if he is now on the wrong side of 30.All three of them have some level of "head case" factor to them, it's like playing Russian roulette with three bullets.

Crabtree seems to have a bad attitude, questionable work ethic and you get the feeling that he is a Moss-esque "Play when I want to play" guy but he has far more talent than Jones and Streater.I question whether he will ever get right enough in the head to put it all together but if he does his natural ability far outstrips anything on the Raiders roster right now.

We can disagree on on Crabtree's talent level, but how does having a potential malcontent at WR help Carr's development?

I'm sorry I forgot about the glut of WRs on the Raiders roster who have put up 1,100 yards and 9 TDs in a season, with mediocre QBs, and are in their prime (27 years old).His talent far outstrips anything on the Raiders roster.

Yeah, he is probably an improvement over someone. So is Bowe and Harvin.

Yeah I still like Harvin's ability but it seems like no one has been able to figure out how to properly utilize him for years. Not sure the Musgrave and Co are really the guys to figure him out. And he has always seemed more like utility weapon than a featured WR. Still the explosiveness he has shown is tempting even if it shows up rarely. Bowe has looked like he has been getting slower and slower the past few years. But I guess WRs have never really been featured in Andy Reid's offense so maybe he could still bring it in the right situation and he has the best pedigree of the bunch even if he is now on the wrong side of 30.All three of them have some level of "head case" factor to them, it's like playing Russian roulette with three bullets.

Harvin had his best year under Musgrave, while Musgrave was the Minnesota offensive coordinator.

I guess it could happen again but I think that could have also have been a case of broken clock syndrome.

Even with Latavius and Helu in those roles, you need another back. I feel you about the touches he had last year, but if he has two good/decent seasons, it's worth it.

Overspending on DeMarco is not the smart move to make, I agree. However, this team can afford it.

Jordan Cameron not signing anywhere tells me everything I need to know about the fear teams have about the concussions. I'll take Gresham all day, I said so in last years thread. I'd be excited about Cameron, who wouldn't? But we'd be holding our breath every time he got hit.

On the other hand, this team can afford the money to take the risk.

What about Forsett ?

Why not throw the guy a front loaded contract for a couple of years to see what Latavius really brings to the table ?

No need to sign Crabtree if the plan is to draft one of the top WRs with pick 4.

Maclin would have been nice.

Harvin is not the answer.

DeMarco is not the answer.

Solidifying the TE spot with Gresham would be nice. He is not great but is decent. This team has plenty of need for decent players.

Not sure why the D has not be further addressed. CB and Dline are absolute musts in FA. Right now.
