2016 Green Bay Packers thread (1 Viewer)

I will say this.  There isn't another corner on the Packers who could have made that deep pick.  Terrible decision by Russell to throw it, but Randall showed some serious closing speed too.  I was glad to see him make that play.  The other pick was a gift, but he didn't drop it.  He played his best game as a Packer.  Now he needs to string two of these together.

On the flipside you can see how missing even part of a good secondary can make a defense look much worse. As well as Chancellor played he was still beaten for a TD and the non-Sherman DBs were exposed.

This was a game where the bounces went the Packers’ way but they also played well. Zero turnovers and one sack that was Rodgers’s fault. No one has thrashed Seattle like this in what, 4 or 5 years? If GB were 10-3 I might gloat over a victory like this but this year it’s not more important than any other remaining game. Time to bully the division.

Agreed.  It think it's pretty obvious who the number 1 wideout is for the Packers now.
McCarthy's play calling relies on that deep ball. We haven't seen it hardly at all this year (definitely not last year with Jordy out). Adams is a gem. I can't believe I'm saying that. But he's won me over.

Yesterday it looked like they were back to having fun. I agree with everything you said about Randall. He had a coming out party, hopefully he will stay out because if he crawls back into his shell that'll be very disappointing.

I believe it was about this time many years ago that Shields really proved his worth and came into his own. It's only been one game but it was very promising. This defensive backfield may not be a complete dumpster fire

On the Randall topic. Yesterday is the example of why they like him so much. He shows that kind of potential to play a coverage/ball hawk type roll. I'm not sure he'll ever be a great tackler.

That said, you can probably put that late Mcevoy TD on Randall, which is why he's a little maddening right now.

Missing games this season didn't help his development. Hopefully he finishes strong and comes back wiser next season.

Cook had a contused lung.  That's right, a lung that got contused.  Expected to be available for the Bears game.  That's a bit of good news.  Now, if Clay and Aaron can progress, and maybe Perry have some availability that would have me looking up.  If Lang got out of the game without aggravating his injury that would be sweet.  I hope Cobb feels alright this morning as well.

TT's drafting recently looks better by the week.  Adams and Montgomery both are looking better each week.  Spriggs looks like a smart choice.  Clark, Lowrey,Ryan, Martinez, all are looking better and better.

I don't believe we'll see Perry again this season. With Elliott and Lowry playing this well, maybe they'll help pickup that slack.

I also like Hundley, Ripkowski, Frackrell, and have hopes for Trevor Davis.  Even Ringo showed a bit of something and I hear Murphy is doing o.k.  Frankly TT may have hit it out of the park the last two drafts as things are now developing.

I'm still suspicious.  I did see him do his usual milling around the pile routine without actually sticking his nose in.

This is quite common. Quite painful. It's basically like a concussion to the chest cavity; everything else inside keeps moving after the bones (in this case, ribs) strike the ground. Lungs bruise by contacting the ribcage. Nasty stuff
Any risk of blood clots?  I've had the pulmonary embolism.  Not pleasant

I've got to admit I had a private laugh and thought of the Shark Pool's favorite Yooper / Randall hater when he got that second ("look what I found") interception.

I'm not certain what happened on the first one, but if its true that he baited Wilson then made the recovery int, that's truly a big-time NFL play.

Maybe he did.  However Wilson made a hugely ill-advise Favre-esque throw rolling left and throwing to the right like that.  It might as well have been a punt for how long it hung in the air.  But Wilson is a very smart player and he must have seen Baldwin just wide ### open to even attempt it.  Credit where it's due, Randall looked great on that play.  Did you notice that he actually fell down before the second pick?  He must have worn his lucky sweater yesterday because I don't think I've ever seen a guy make a pick like that after falling down.

All this said, it's still time to move on from McCarthy, Dom, and Ted.  I hope that transition starts this offseason with Dom getting canned at the very least.

Possibly...but talking mostly about Capers with that.

Sure...Philly and Houston can be written off due to being not so great...But they dismantled Seattle on D even...that with missing even more personnel.
I'm still not a believer.  Russell made some terrible decisions.  They got two picks I remember that were off tips.  Everything broke their way.   They finished Seattle off though, unlike in 2014.   I still think they are going to miss the playoffs.  But Mike is most likely saving his own job.

A couple lucky breaks doesn't fix what is wrong with this team.  Lacking in personnel and scheme.
Their scheme all year has been handicapped by injuries. The last 3 games, when they are starting to finally get healthier, you see them playing better. I think it is foolish to make any long term judgements based on an injury filled season. And you can say they lacked personnel to withstand those injuries but I don't think there is a team in the league that would be able to withstand losing their top 3 CBs and not have it affect how they play their game.

This season and going forward.

Bumps and bruises along the way (both in team health and just poor play).  Has the season gone much different than expected?  I guess.  Thinking if healthy they are a 12-4/13-3 type of team.  Was that crazy?  I don't think so given they can very easily finish 10-6 while beat up.  Games that I thought would have gone differently for the positive side...Washington, Indy, Tennessee.  I guess the other side is not really expecting the Seattle win (though, I think I read that Seattle has not won in GB since like 1999).  Would it all be a mirage?  Possibly...Rodgers still hides a lot of flaws...but some of the flaws early on have been his (and the offense not moving the ball well).  That was compounded by poor play by a defense that lost a lot of players over the year.

What we have learned...

-Rodgers...despite struggles since last season...has come on and seems right back to MVP type form.  If they make the playoffs, he will be in that MVP discussion and rightfully so.

-The OL is pretty darn good.  Probably the best they have had in a while.  With Barclay not in the picture...the depth looks good too.  Will be interesting to see how things play out with Tretter and Lang.  Spriggs is nice depth...but if they can bring Tretter and Lang back...Line should be solid for a few more years and they can focus draft and FA (haha) elsewhere.

-WR...Adams showing why Rodgers and McCarthy talked him up so much.  Cobb is a good slot guy, but can we find that elsewhere cheaper?  I still like the guy a lot...but just seems to have lost something.  Jordy is a possession guy at this point.  Could get back a little bit as its still just over a year out from that injury.  And he is damn good in this role right now.  Kudos to him for always taking team friendly deals too.  Just an all around great player and great guy it seems.  I expect a bit of attention to this position in the offseason.

-RB...who knows.  Is Montgomery an answer there as more of a 3rd down back type roll?  Do they bring back Lacy?  Starks gone.  Said it in the Montgomery thread...I think a Lacy/Montgomery duo is a pretty nice start.  As good as a guy like Cook from FSU would look in green and gold...they have other holes to fill and bringing Lacy back for the right price to pair with Montgomery could be good.  Add another young back here even as early as 3rd round?  or a cheap vet if available.

-TE...how much will Cook cost...can we trust him.  We see the talent and he and Rodgers click from time to time.  Could use another here as well as I just don't see much in Richard Rodgers.

D

-You can never have enough LBs.  Injuries have killed this position this year.  Martinez and Ryan were playing well...but got hurt.  Clay is always hurt in some way.  Peppers getting on in years and Perry is inconsistent.  Another position that will be interesting to watch going forward this season and offseason.

-DL can be pretty darn good...expect a little change there, Daniels and Guion are very good base though to work with and build around.  Have not seen enough of Clark...like to see how he develops.  Lowry has certainly made some noise the last 2 weeks.

-S...some don't like Hyde.  I think he has been in roles he just is not suited for because of the injuries.  HaHa is solid and Burnett has played very well and seems more like he is moving to the hybrid role than Hyde is.  Brice...meh, just a guy IMO.

-CB...a lot of attention needed here.  Injuries just killed them here this season.  nice to see Rollins and Randall play well last week and hopefully a sign of things to come. I won't write off Rollins or Randall...still young and injuries have hurt them.  Shields they just can't count on anymore sad to say.  I expect this will be the biggest focus in the offseason.

Front office...

-Much to the dismay of some...unless he wants to go elsewhere, I don't see McCarthy going anywhere (barring a collapse).  I think they would love to ride out the continuity there with the system and he and Rodgers (despite what is a rocky relationship on the surface at times).

-Dom...has he been trying to save his job the last 3 weeks?  Will it be enough?  Who to bring in?  Change in scheme even back to 4-3?  Hard to predict here.  D has not been very good at all and Id have no problem saying by to the toupee.

-Ted...unless he retires...he won't be going anywhere.  Could be more of a transition thing if he wants a year to work Wolf into the spot.  Wondering how soon they will need to move there though before risking losing Wolf.

I agree with most of this.  I think Mike, Dom, and Ted will all be back barring a total collapse.  Wolf will go be the GM in Cleveland or Jacksonville.  They will not bring in free agents, They will draft a player in the first round who is "versatile" and promptly switch his position.

Well, the die has been cast.  The Packers are pretty much in win or go home mode already.  Wish they'd have taken the Titans and Colts seriously but alas, if they win out, I think they make the playoff somehow.  But if they lose even one game, I don't think they can make it.  Nice having playoff football to watch in mid December.  All or nothing boys.

Well I have my doubts, severe doubts even.  Still, they have reeled off three in a row.

They need another three, three games they likely will be favored in, but not bye much.  Two of those will be on the road, one in extreme conditions, the home game too might be in extreme conditions.  The Packers leaders on each side of the ball are hampered.  If the run continues and they make it into the playoffs, and maybe, against all reason, all the way, it will certainly be the stuff of legends.  They will be attempting the impossible.  I'll be glued to my T.V.

Go Pack go!

They could lose one...but it can't be Detroit...and Detroit would have to drop all 3 (which is possible given they play NY and Dallas).

Did HWY23 leave the game late?  I had to go to my kids Christmas program.  I saw where Alshon beat him for the TD but he's out now.

Detroit crapping their pants & Minnesota is too.

Vikings are next

There was no way Detroit was going to win out with that schedule.

Packers have everything in front of them now. They control their own destiny

Beat the Vikings, then beat Detroit, win the division.

It's that simple

Didn't get to watch (reception to celebrate my in laws 59th anniversary).  Followed thru my phone and got a bit nervous there.

saw the replay of the pass to Jordy...funny seeing him throw his hand up as soon as he sees the safety stepping forward and he gets past the DB.

What a freaking pass too.

Packers CB Damarious Randall, when asked why he was benched, said: "Ask the coach." Said coach Mike McCarthy: "Performance and some things."
My guess is the "some things" were the deluge of phone calls at halftime from Sabertooth.
