You know, I was thinking about it, and I'm not trying to start a holy war.

I'm trying to go to a great stadium for the first time, eat barbecue for about 9 hours, and watch my team take control of the division on the road, on national TV.  

I'm not gonna wear any gear.  Why risk effing up a football bucket list trip?  My parking lot brawling days are in the past.  

 
While waiting for this game, I was messing around on OverTheCap, and the team has some interesting roster moves coming this offseason.

Players we are going to potentially make moves on:

Derek Carr:  The sooner we extend him, the better, the cheaper he will be, and we can arrang ehis salary in a way as to make it team friendly.  He's gonna be expensive, no doubt, but it sure appears he wants to stay here.  And really, and this is strange to say as a Raider fan, why wouldn't he?  Not many better spots for a young QB to be in.  In theory, we could wait, and franchise him after 2017, and blah blah blah, but I would rather extend him now, and let Kirk Cousins and othet young QBs try and get more money than a superior QB.  

Dan Williams:  No dead money if he is cut, resulting in a 4.5 mill savings.  Williams has not had a good year, hasn't played a lot, and came in out of shape.  Was a good signing, but might be time to move on.  

Donald Penn:  At some point, he's gonna age.  Has played well for us, and I expect the team to keep him one more year.  However, he's 6 mill on the cap, and if the team picked up a LT somewhere somehow, he could be an August cut.  Personally, I hope he plays here forever.  

Reggie Nelson:  4.25 mill in cap, and again, no dead money if cut (because Reggie is the bestest GM evah!).  Ideally, he can play another year, and some young guy we take can be groomed for a season.  But if the team does find a cheaper, younger centerfielder, he could be gone.  Might just be a one year rental.  

Khalil Mack:  He could possibly be extended this year, but I can make an argument that we should wait.  He has a year left, and our option year, and maybe two years of franchising.  Is that the goal?? No.  But waiting a year, exercising the option, and then extending makes the most sense to me.  UNLESS.....he were to take a JJ Watt discount.

Seabass:  He's old, and expensive.

DJ Hayden:  His contract is up, and the team might be ready to move on, but if he re-signed cheap, he might be worthy of a top 4 CB spot.  I dunno how they view him.  I know how Raider Nation views him.  

Menelik Watson:  I think they re-sign him, and maybe get a good deal.  Team clearly likes him, he needs to get healthy, and get some PT before the end of season.

Malcolm Smith:  Contract is up.  Not a special player, but not a glaring weakness.  

Matt McGloin:  We have Connor Cook, was he drafted in order to upgrade at backup QB from the Ginger Sensation?

Latavius Murray:  I think he can forget about a 4 year, 20 mill deal from this team.  I would be shocked if he re-signed.  

Perry Riley:  One year wonder, who has been a nice find.  Here's hoping he signs to a nice afffordable deal.  Not getting big money elsewhere.  

Stacey McGee:  Forced himslef into the rotation, had some nice moments.  He's a UFA.  Are Edwards, Latham, and Jelly enough to let him go?

Mychal Rivera:  UFA, probably gone, I guess.  We could do worse at 3rd TE, but I think Gabe Holmes takes that spot.  

That's a lot of decisions!

Raiders defensive end Mario Edwards hasn’t played in a game yet this season, but the team hasn’t given up hope that he’ll make it back from his hip injury in time to help the team.

Edwards took another step toward that return on Thursday when he worked out on grass for the first time in the rehab process. Edwards posted a video of that work on Instagram and General Manager Reggie McKenzie said “hopefully he’ll graduate” to the next step soon. If he does and the Raiders designate him to return, there will be a three-week window for Edwards to practice with the team before they have to decide on adding him to the active roster.

Edwards wasn’t initially expected to be out for this long, but McKenzie said that the team has been working with Edwards to ensure he doesn’t experience any other problems.

“It was just a slower process,” McKenzie said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “The one thing you want to be is asymptomatic, even if he’s just doing a little rehab with the trainers. But he wasn’t feeling right, whatever the little twinges of pain or whatever he had. We just scaled back from that particular rehab process. So it was all on him on how he felt. The injury is healed now.”

Edwards isn’t the only potential addition to the defense for the Raiders. Linebacker Aldon Smith is eligible to be reinstated from suspension, but McKenzie said Thursday that the team still hasn’t heard anything from the league on that front.

Solid thoughts, as ever, mass. An agree on nearly all -- would love if Penn kept producing, but I see 1 more year as most likely scenario given Father Time. We will need to seek replacement anchors for him and for the other side of the line in the next few drafts/FA periods to keep this O-line as Top 3 in the NFL.

Cut Williams, and cut Hayden. Both are not starter quality, and we've seen the Hayden experiment play out -- no reason to think he suddenly becomes consistently good. 

Agree with putting Nelson on a short leash - he's been a very good addition to shore up the backfield, but not the true impact player I was expecting. Not overextending ourselves here in lieu of finding a better option at safety is fine.

Push the chips in on Carr and Mack. Whether we pay a little more now or later, our primary objective should be solidifying long term deals with studs. When is Osemele's deal up? He should be included in forward-planning of cash outlay.

Agree that Murray becomes more of a cap liability, and think the better option is to let him find his deal elsewhere, but he's actually been pretty productive and complimetary to the younger backs we have. Not sure I've seen enough from either Washington or Richards to make me think either can be our starting backs, alone or in tandem. Murray brings more to the table in that regard so would be open to retaining him if we can for short term and cheap. But likely that's not Murray's goal here.

re: Menelik -- I think he has great raw talent and just needs to be healthy and get a consistent shot, but I've thought that for a bit now. I'm not averse to keeping him as he's cheap and can still be developed. Also not averse to letting him walk if we can fill that with more reliable starter quality guys at the position.

 
Hayden placed on season ending IR. I thought his game has slowly improved since his rookie season. The defense may miss him more than the fan base realizes.

This hurts. While he might not be the lock down corner we all had hoped, he's done pretty well as the 3rd DB and he's become a sure tackler. Hamilton or whomever takes his place is a down grade. It'll hurt even more if Amerson isn't 100% yet. 

 
Hayden has had his moments this year, but he still gets beat a lot and commits a lot of penalties.  Don't see this as an impact loss at all.

Not sure there are many #3 DBs that would be an upgrade.

And he looks to have emerged as a very good tackler.  Seen him lay plenty of good hits this season and ball carriers don't seem to get past him much.

I agree he's got his warts, but if expectations are properly set (CB3/slot) he's got value to the D.  We don't need that guy to be an All-Pro to help us, and he brought some value.  I'd be ok with re-signing him if the money is right.  Anything much more than vet minimum shouldn't happen, and probably won't under Reggie.

I agree that he is a pretty good tackler, but he is a very poor cover corner.  I won't miss his third down automatic first down penalties.

i had a BLAST in kc a few years ago.  look for the guys in red coats.  they are ambassadors for the chiefs and will steer you in the right the direction as a raider fan.  one of them walked me and my buddy over to a HUGE raider tailgate on the southeast? side of the stadium.  it's a dude that drives down from iowa every year.  huge tent, full bar, massive food spread.  we threw him $50 for me and my buddy and had a blast with a grip of raider fans.

we had ZERO issues with fans and were fully geared up.  great people  front row, 50 yard line.  i'm on the right, the couple are from alaska.  bad picture of the tent  moar tent.  sweet seats.  one of the girls at the tent insisted i put on the face paint.  i went with the fu man chu

Good test today against a formidable Buffalo defense in what's a must win / desperation game for Buffalo. 

Im excited to see how it turns out - I'll get to watch the 2nd half after work.  

 
This just made me sign up for NFL Sunday Ticket to go.  I just got a smart TV and noticed it's got the NFLST app on it so giving that a shot.  $40 to catch Raiders games every week isn't bad at all.

 
Yeah but we know that this is who we are.  We aren't winning anything with our defense, the question is how difficult will they make it on Carr?  Good weeks they don't make it too difficult, and others we have TB/Carolina performances to overcome.  Eventually that catches up with us.

Now for the fun part - watching to see how much Carr can fix!

 
Oakland is scarey good. it's awesome to see this. I've always liked them as a distant second or third favorite team.

with new england losing their best offensive position player, I can't think of any other afc team that I'd rank ahead of Oakland as a superbowl favorite.

Oakland vs Dallas in the superbowl. would be a blast to watch

At start of the season I was hoping for a winning season 9-10 wins. Anything more was gravy. Looks as though we may be swimming in it by end of season!

 
I've spent the last 10+ years obsessed with fantasty football because of how poorly the Raiders have played, and now I could give two sh*ts about my fantasy teams.  Well, I still care, but to have the Raiders at 10-2.  WOW.  With so much young talent, and room to still improve.  And still 10-2.  WOW.

yeah, huge game on a short week of rest. A Chiefs win gives them the slam-dunk tie breaker against us if we tie at the end of the season.

Gotta somehow pull off a win.

Keys to victory:

  1. limit penalties and but most importantly penalties leading to poor down/distance situations 
  2. do not allow any big plays by Chiefs special teams
  3. limit Alex Smith's ability to run

 
We're all a little scared of the Chiefs, but they have not been playing great ball lately. 

We need to have a plan for Justin Houston, he can change games like Mack can.

Every game I watch i keep going back to that commercial with Jordan and Bird playing horse. Each week it seems the raiders have to out do the week before with come backs 

i hope their call this week is dominate from start to finish in all facets of the game

they can let Kelce run free though, need those fantasy points

If Edwards can solidify the middle they can be much better. Now QB's can step up to get away from Irvin and Mack. If that is taken away they'll be more effective. Right now they remind me of the Colt's defense of a few years ago, with Freeney, Manning would get a lead and then the pass rushers could tee off.

Right.  The Bills.  Half.  Well except for getting shredded for 80 yards and a TD on the first two plays of said half.  So less than a half.  Against the Bills.  Like I said, not winning anything with the D, just hoping to not put too much on Carr's shoulders.  Color me not impressed. 

Actually, color me quite impressed.  I'm shocked how much this D has gelled and made strides this year.  I expected much bigger struggles and Carr having to do a lot more to overcome them.   Mack is dominant and the secondary has stretches of solid play.  LB play has been average so teams can't just run the ball down our throat and take all risk out.  Nelson is a huge liability but they have disguised that pretty well.  They've improved much over past years when they would allow terrible offenses to have career days - this year they have held TEN, JAX, TBB, DEN, HOU, and BUF all at or below 24 points.  That's solid performance and I'm not complaining about it at all.  It is what it is, and that's fine.

Indeed save those games for our division foes

its not like we didn't dominate our last 2 games though. Just came out slow last week and Carrs injury and a lucky play turned the tables, ever so briefly against the panthers

Houston, Johnson, Berry - that chiefs D might be the scariest in the NFL. 

Gonna be a hell of a game. 

 
My thoughts on the Bills game:

THE GOOD

  • Are you kidding me? Of COURSE Mack.
  • Carr. He's gone from good to great to unbelievable to a jacked up unicorn with dragon wings and sabre-tooth tiger fangs wielding a fiery greatsword aloft in one razor-sharp talon-- literally magical
  • Pride and Poise is back, baby -- if you watched the post game presser, you note that both Black Jack and Carr use similar terminology -- "stacking wins," "staying the course," etc. This team is more than a team, it's a culture. One of insisting on the highest standards, of playing all 60 minutes, of not letting the huge momentum swings get us.
  • Bizarro Raiders -- in the best way. Was a long time when a team got up by two scores that we would lose confidence and collapse. This game, it was the Bills who completely got demoralized and gave up. As for the Raiders, it's unbelievable that we've gone from a team we expected to lose the game at any costs to one we expect to win at any cost -- because they consistently do.  
  • Our ground attack. Lat looked great -- so gratifying to see the big guy rumble so successfully. He was at times nimble, at times a truck. Richard also was fantastic, bringing pure speed to the line, and often lowering the shoulder and bulling forward himself. They owe the O-line another steak dinner.   
THE BAD

  • Our ability to block a delay misdirection run. It was a delay cutback play that McCoy torched us on, and they used it a few times later in the game allowing Shady and Gillislee to gash us some more. 
  • Our ability to contain a mobile QB. Taylor and Bills OC Anthony Lynn threw a lot of college looks at us -- spreads, options, even the wildcat, allowing Tyrod to roam free. Was actually laughing out loud when the Raiders tried to emulate it once with a Carr bootleg run that gained pretty much nada.  
  • Dropsies -- on one series, both Roberts and Crabs dropped sure TDs. Some other key drops later as well. We need Biletnikoff back on the sidelines with some stickum for the boys. 
THE UGLY

  • DeAndre Washington's role? I mean, he'll be involved and is decent depth, but it was the second consecutive healthy scratch. 
  • Jano -- he didn't miss, but he looked shaky. A botched kickoff, a dinger XP. Could have been worse, but he looked his age out there.
  • King -- I've said it before, I'll say it again: act like you've been there before. Not against celebration, unless it's needlessly excessive. No better example of that than his little flag dance. 
  • Crabs's finger -- at one point looked like he jammed it, and he ran over from the sidelines with it looking like it jammed sideways. Far worse than what Carr's finger looked like in that split second, but apparently he was fine.

Agree on all points Tom. Just to add...  Joseph's injury is a concern. I don't like how they're already shakey secondary is losing pieces the past couple weeks. Hopefully he can play on a short week. 

 
Some thoughts on what the Raiders need to do in what likely is the most important game for us in nearly 15 years.

1) Same as every game, from time immemorial, but limit mistakes and penalties. Play clean and just execute, baby.  

2) Cooper vs. Peters. Both of these guys are the creme of their rookie class, and their 1:1 battles will be fun to watch for years. Cooper needs to be more elite.

3) Contain Kelce. This will be on our linebacking corps, specifically Smith and Irvin at Sam and Willie. We're historically suspect, Kelce is a bona fide TE1, and we need to smother and disrupt him, potentially bracket play him high with safety help and underneath by the LBs.

4) Scheme to free up Mack. No brainer here, and Norton has done a good job over the last few games to do just this, though truth be told Mack really is doing most of it all on his own. Still, KC is susceptible to the sack, and we have just the guy to exploit that. Hope Mack is glued to film for the next 72 hours or so.

5) Protect the lead, if we get one -- as fantastic as the Raiders are in the 4th quarter, the Chiefs are comeback kids in their own right.

6) Stop the run. Tall task, as the Chiefs can be dangerous especially against our D that isn't terrific in this phase of the game, and prone to giving up huge tracts of land. But if we can make them one-dimensional, and force long down and distance situations, we can unleash the hounds on pass rush and discombobulate Smith, who isn't the most mobile of QBs.

 
This is potentially a big week for us, but if we lose it's not the end anything. 

The only difference is we would lose control for the time being of home field throughout the playoffs.

We need to really be rooting for BAL this week as well.

 
Good chance this game ends up being for the AFC West crown. I'm sure both teams have that mindset to a good degree. Gives this week a championship feel.

 
To clinch a playoff berth this weekend, Raiders need:

OAK win + MIA loss or tie

OAK win + DEN loss

OAK tie + MIA loss + BAL loss or tie

OAK tie + MIA loss + PIT loss or tie
