You guys know I love following the salary cap minutiae, we might have won this game because the Saints are bad at cap management.

That Lutz kid missed two FGs, and was kept over a vet who made more money because they were trying to save money.

 
Watched the condensed version of the game, and Jihad definitely looks like he belongs.  Hustling, and quick.

He's going to give up some plays in the running game, but looks like a keeper.

Short passing game continues to be the way to beat us.  With our pass rush, it's the formula.  

 
Latham got more snaps than Jelly and Dan.

McGill started at safety and played all but two snaps. Allen played 5 defensive snaps; Joseph 0.

 
What a game. Great win, we deserve it for hanging tough and keeping a "never say die" attitude. 

Lot of things to improve upon -- certainly the defense was not playing to potential -- on the line, or in the d-backfield. Let's face it, we got extremely lucky, too, with that flag on 4th and 5 on Craig Robertson against Richard. But we capitalized, and executed, and won a tough shootout on the road. And as you guys already called out, had to face a lot of injury and shuffling on the O-line but still kept Carr clean and uninhibited from making plays downfield.

We also benefited from some cruddy time management by Sean Payton, who burned a time out in the third for no apparent reason, then again late in the 4th after that huge bomb/fumble/recovery to Snead that put the Saints on our 2.

Either way, love the outcome and the fight that the team showed.

This, all day. To really get to a next level, we need to win the games that are winnable at home. Atlanta isn't a cupcake matchup, given they can move the ball through the air and on the ground, but their D let Winston torch them through the air, so looking for big things out of the AC/DC connection, and from Crabs and Roberts.

Starting at 2-0 before going on the road again for two weeks would be huge. And the teams that we face through the next stretch until we get KC at home in WK 6 are beatable.

 
^^^ The move he made behind the LOS to fake right and then go left in order to get the DT to commit to the wrong gap was veteran as ####.

This kid looks like an absolute gem.

Yeah, there's a chance.  But no one knows.  That's the short version, and really all you need to read.  No one knows.  

Beyond that, I would say that it looks like we have a keeper here.  Training camp buzz/practice reports (which I find more important than preseason game explosions) were very positive.  However, they were very positive about Washington as well.  Washington has looked very good whenever we have seen him as well, and both are behind a, for the moment, clear starter.  

I love the story, tho.  Richard is the definition of an underdog.  He was not even a UDFA.   He did not receive an offer from the Raiders after the draft, or from anyone else.  Richard was a tryout guy.  After everyone signed their UDFA's, they give a few guys tryouts, let them come in a workout, and they maybe sign one or two, to fill out the roster, and most get cut quickly.  This kid comes in, makes the team, and tears of a 75 yard run up the gut on his first carry.  Awesome.

 
Watching the ATL/TB game on replay, and it looks like a good matchup for us, IMO.

The Falcons were pretty imaginitive on offense, a lot of misdirection, screens, shovel passes, etc.  I think it's a matter of them not having the horses up front.  Defensive discipline will be big, because aside from Julio, they have no real weapons.  Tevin Coleman is dangerous out of the backfield, he has the speed to take it home, but he's not a special runner, almost a DMC-lite.  Long-legged, exaggerated cuts, no real wiggle.  Freeman has wiggle, but little power.  Sanu is not a terrible 2nd WR, but he looked good against the midget CBs the Bucs had.  Jake Matthews, the LT, is a problem for ATL.  Mack or Irvin against him will be juicy all game long.  ATL will be passing it quick on Sunday.

We might have two backs with 12+ carries next week, because I don't think the Bucs can stand up to the inside running game.  I would make those rookie LBs take on Gabe and Ose in the running game all day long, just wear them down.  They don't have any size on defense.

Whole team looking flat. Classic let down game.

OTOH they should be down by a lot more than three at this point so it's not a crisis yet but they need to wake the **** up.

 
Agree Bruno. Z E R O sacks and no pressures. Pass rush has stunk the first two. In turn it has exposed the secondary. Very disappointing. JDR's decision to go forit on 4th diwn at midfield was stupid and cost them any chance to win.

 
Funny the selective memory going in here. Bad game overall even for a team that had two X country trips this week, but JDRs gutsy calls are clearly about developing a confident, brazen team that believes they will overcome any situation and has the complete faith and confidence of the staff. So while I found the game disappointing on many levels I am not bothered in any way about the 4th down call at midfield.

I don't mind the decision to go on 4th...but the cookie cutter run play was terrible.

I'm OK with the call.  If they would have made it , it would have been another "gutsy" call by JDR. It's the horrible defense I have issues with. How can they be this bad? There was no resistance at all. Ryan and the rest of the offense pretty much imposed their will on the Raiders D. Shoot, they didn't even send their punter out on the field until the final 30 seconds of the game. That's unacceptable. For those who think preseason doesn't matter, if anyone was paying attention, there were signs all preseason long the defense was going to have issues. They aren't getting any pressure up front at all. And again, what the heck is it with the opposing TEs? Can't they find any LBs and Safeties that can cover? And while I'm venting,  they should have gone after Jenoris Jenkins instead of Sean Smith this past off season. 

Trying to be positive. The OL overall is keeping Carr clean,  and the running game looks formidable. And I really like the stable of RBs they have and the way they are rotating them. Murray has surprised me this year,  he's definitely running harder and it's showing at the goaline.

This is spot on.  The O has taken a step forward while the D remains awful or worse.  How can there be no pass rush?  Norton is gone soon.
