***2017 Cakeleeg Leeg Thread*** - let's just call it a day (5 Viewers)

closers are different strokes for different strokes.  me personally, I want a guy with a job because I subscribe to the theory that they don't pitch enough to vary that much from one to another; however, I have not nerded up like the 2 above.  in 60-65 innings, will 30 more Ks matter?  will ERA or WHIP be greatly effected in 1400 inning leagues?  additionally, no guarantee these guys actually get more saves than other closers.  I think its a 1 cat play and i'll wait it oot.

I waited and drafted LaTroy Hawkins and Joe Nathan a couple years ago.  Never again.  That said, I don't think 3rd/4th round is where I'd take a guy either.  I guess I fall somewhere in the middle.

Most years I'm with you on this re: moderation is the best place to be on closers. I could be making this up, but it feels like there is less stability in RP 16-30 than there has been in a long time. If you don't get two of the top 15 in a big league like one of these, it feels like you are destine to fish for saves at some point this season. Of course, both of the guys I drafted may end up on the DL and I'll be fishing for them anyway.

Do I have enough on account or do you need a retainer?
I think we are even or close.  Let me look.  I recall owing you $25 but you owed me $25 for playoff contest.  Surprised neither of us has an accurate accounting methodology for our drunken wagering on crappy bowl games.

I thought I was up 4-5 units, but I could be wrong. I lost my phone. Do you have our old text exchanges? I think we did a running total

Drafting from my least favorite position was a handicap. It forced my hand on which direction to go early.

Took Bumgarner 1st and reached a little for Tre in the second.

I decided to stock up/win pitching, then get all the speed I could find, and fill in power in the second half.

====================

C Murphy - a shot at cheap power
Cervelli- Tucker probably won't get that many at bats, so FC with his abive average OBP will be a non-harmful fillin

1B/CI/DH  Bird - not very confident, but love the power upside. Carter - looking for 30 hr in 350 abs. CJ Cron could have a good year and 30 hr would not surprise me.  AJ Reed and Kendrys both have lots of pop if they can only get enough abs/consistency to deal it

2B/3B/MI - Segura, Trea Turner, Bregman - should be solid with lots of steals and moderate power and strong obp
Kendrick, Shimpf, Valbuena decent backup or even enable a move to the OF for Trea. 30 hrs for Valbuena is realistic if he can get the ABs, The more likely Pujols returns healthy. the less  likely it will happen

OF - Pollock, McCutchen, Puig, Beltran, Granderson - no depth, relying of returns from McC and Pollock. Hit or miss, will likely deploy some IFs with OF eligibility

SP Bumgarenr, Maeda, Salazar, Greinke, Musgrove, Keuchel, Morton

RP Melancon, Giles, Greggerson

=========

Drafting 14th, I like what I cobbled together. Much will depend on returns to form from McC and Pollock. A little luck with some longshots Bird, Murphy, would be nice. Lots of Astros, but only two in pivotal roles (Bregman and Giles) most of the rest were just late value plays with upside.

I should do very well in Pitching and if I can stay mid-pack in hitting, a chance for money is possible.

Overall Grade - B, with decent chance of C or possibly an A

so is there a period every day where add/drop is FCFS, or do add/drops always process overnight based on waiver order?  me personally I think there should be FCFS up until games start and then waivers process overnight.

the reasoning here, is that sometimes I'll want to make a move for that days games (say one of my hitters is sitting and I see a good matchup that I want to pickup to replace him).  can't do that if you have to wait for waivers to process overnight.

I think in past you couldn't pick up guys for same day start anyway

Main Guys:

Y Molina - 2016 was most PAs in his career and he bounced off an injury with a .360 obp.  Will gladly take a repeat out of an end game C.

Hosmer, M Franco, Suarez - Not thrilled with the OBP drag potential here, but they are 20-30 HR guys still in their prime.  Hoping for thumping.

Dozier, Carpenter, Reyes - A couple of 2b guys with 20+ HR potential, dozier off of a pretty awesome year, need him to chip in 15 steals and carpenter to pile up PAs with a .370+ OBP.  Reyes has been a grab of mine in multiple leagues, as I am a met homer and know he will play everyday, likely 3b.  I would expect 90 runs, 10 homers and 20 steals.  I likely took him early, but I get to watch him daily.

Betts, Cruz, Cespedes, Eaton, Melky, Gardner - Need this group to be awesome.  Betts, Gardner & Eaton need to get me 60 steals at least.  1 takes up a UTIL spot.

Gregorius, A Gordon, Arcia, Etc. - Likely gregorius to fill a UTIL spot, but will see if steals are needed.

Quintana, A Sanchez, Smyly, Happ, Roark, Cobb, Wheeler - I went offence over pitching, as I always do.  SP is random and I am not willing to spend on a top guy.  I prefer to finish last and grab mid level guys for some reason.  Quintana, roark, a sanchez seem a decent enough top 3.  happ won't repeat, but he seems to have something going up there and I couldn't pass up his 2016 where I got him.  smyly is a wildcard, but has decent stuff.  wheeler a flyer for when Harvey and Matz and Syndergaard get hurt.

Famlia, Kimbrel - 2 entrenched closers.  familia will miss some time, likely similar to chapman's 30 games, but I would still expect saves in the 30s from him.  the bottom 15 guys in MLB might be ever changing, so maybe I get more saves elsewhere.

My concern is pitching and steals.  But I guess everyone has a concern somewhere.  I should do better than Cos, his team looks like afterbirth.

got a lot of requests for this, so here goes:

C Yasmani Granfal: An OBP monster.  Big season last year and should be even better now that he's 100%

1B Joe Abreu: Like him to take it to the next level this year.

2B Ben Zobrist: Great OBP skills, batting 1st or 2nd in a great offense, should continue to mash here in his twilight years

3B Kris Bryant: One of the best to do it and something tells me we ain't seen his best yet

SS Franc Lindor: My best bet to finish the year as the #1 ranked shortstop

MI Cedar Hernandez: Several other owners were pissed when I snagged him several rounds later than he normally goes, and I think that says it all.  Blessed to get this guy at MI, would have gladly played him at 2B.

CI Mike Moustakas: Great value here, have already fielded several offers from owners looking to plug him in at 3B.

OF Ian Desmond: Drafting a month before the season starts.  Nice league Capella

OF Adam Duvall: One of the premier power hitters in the game today and we should see that walk rate reach double digits this year

OF Starling Marte: 30-30 not out of the question for this guy.  would have spent a 1st rounder on him, but Bryant was still there.

OF Matt Joyce: Saw a career resurgence in '16 and when Billy Beane is interested in another fat OBP platoon guy, you gotta take notice

OF Andrew Toles: The living legend

Util Joe Mauer: The guy just knows how to get it done

Util Byung Ho Park: Should take the next step in his second year facing MLB pitching

SP Carlos Martinez, Jerad Eickhoff, Jake Odorizzi, Jameson Taillon, Rich HIll, Taijuan Walker, Ivan Nova, Tony Desclafani: Tons of upside here.  Hard not to be excited about this group, should be in the top half in all cats

RP Wade Davis, Sam Dyson, Cam Bedrosian: Davis might win me saves alone this year but went with two other strong guys for insurance

C - Gary Sanchez:  Rookie of the year.  By season's end, people will be saying "Yogi who?"
1B - Miguel Cabrera:  Triple Crowns are just what he does.
2B - Devin Travis:  A full season of production will make this the value pick of the year in that potent lineup.
SS - Javier Baez:  Best player on MLB's best team.
3B - Ryon Healy:  Brings the bash back to Oakland.
MI - Jose Ramirez:  And this is why I'm winning Cake this year.
CI - Wil Myers:  30/30 from CI?  Yes please, all day long.
OF - Charlie Blackmon, Jackie Bradley Jr, Nomar Mazara, Hunter Renfroe, Tyler Naquin:  Just an embarrassment of riches, really.
UT - Yoan Moncada:  Gary Shandling says this is the next Jose Altuve.  What a get!
UT - Jurickson Profar:  Eligible at every position but catcher.  He may even spot start at pitching for the Rangers.

SP -  Jon Lester, Mashario Tanaka, Gerrit Cole, Julio Urias, Jordan Zimmerman, Junior Guerrra, Sonny Gray, Lucas Giolito, Seth Lugo:  This is why I've already spent your money on drugs and cobalt.  It's mine already.
CL - Aroldis Chapman, Brandon Kintzler, Santiago Casilla, Bruce Rondon, Randaell Delgado: My strategy was to punt saves, but I ended up with five closers anyhow.

WINNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best team you've ever drafted alone.

Should be good for 11th

There is so much juicy talent on the wire.  Just got Storen and Reynolds this morning.  This is going to be so easy.

Nope, waivers will run every night.  Even when we had free agents, you couldn't pick up for same day's game.  This is a shark league, you'll have to do some planning.

without question this team is good enough to be in the top half of the bottom quarter.
