2017 Summer Football Tournament- Tournament cancelled, everyone go home (1 Viewer)

What's the rationale for not having a "golden goal" format in extra time?  It seems like a walk-off goal would be a hugely dramatic finish.  I liked sudden death in the NFL, but there I at least understood the argument that it was too easy to win a coin flip and kick a FG; here you really have to work for a goal and it seems like you deserve defeat if you give one up in an extra period.

The last 15 minutes in most of the OT games I've watched recently have been pretty bad, which is why I'm asking.

They have the talent to play more positive football, yet they genuinely prefer cynical play.
Wrong.  This year, they didn't have the talent...and sharp defensive tactics are just as good as flamboyant, individualistic attacking flair, if you appreciate the total game.

Glad Italy is gone. Boring schmucks. France-Germany should be a load.
Germany today= EXCITING!!

eta: understand how it looks to a neutral...just tired of always trying to explain things.  I'll take boring, if it equals 4 WCs  & 1 Euro title, as well as 4 other Final appearances

Exhaustion.  It's a tournament format with lots of games in quick succession.  There has to be a set end time.

Sorry, I get that part.  I mean do the two 15 minute periods in a sudden death format, and then go to PKs if it's still tied after 120.

I agree that the current format is better than an indefinite death-march.

Ah.  Maybe.  I think it's fine as is though.  It's not often you see multiple OT goals anyway.

FIFA tried that for a few tournaments about 10-20 years ago. Teams played even more defensively than usual in extra time, terrified of giving up a golden goal.

Thanks.  I was wondering if that's what happened.  In all of these games, the announcers take great care to warn the viewer that there's no golden goal, but they never explain why.
