2018 NCAA Tournament/Shtick Thread: TBS cameraman focused on crying kid who just happens to be up too late (1 Viewer)

This conversation makes me wish science would get off of it's ### and give us the ability to see what players would be like with modern nutrition, PEDs, strength training, coaching, analytics, cocaine rehab facilities and whatever. Obviously guys like McHale might still not translate to today, but guys like Bird and Magic would be monsters today (special note: I've never seen anything more than ESPN Classic games or highlights but still).
We see it in every sport where players are timed (track, swimming, etc). Athletes are better, stronger and faster now. If it weren’t for a stopwatch people would still say Mark Spitz was better than Michael Phelps.

Also, the ball movement and shooting in the nba now is spectacular.

To the contrary, Isiah Thomas would be really good in this up-tempo style of the nba. Probably even better than he was in the 80s.

Bird would have to make some adjustments. The emphasis on 3s now would be huge for him though. But his talents were more unique in the 80s than they are now.

nBA sucks and Loyola going to Final 4 is awesome.

im at a bar, taking an Uber, had Fries with ranch, old bay, and hot sauce. Only thing good about living in Maryland.

I loved old NBA.  Hated Knicks/Heat/Riley era NBA.  Love NBA now.  Love college always though.  Even garbage teams like Syracuse who make games ugly because they want to are beautfiful.

Yeah, the NFL is short on QB, but like 75% of D1 have barely functional quarterbacks at best.
I agree, which is why CFB is only good with selective matchups.  Alabama Clemson is better football than a lot of NFL games, but the Jets vs Browns is better than the average CFB game.

So the take away from Syracuse's zone is that Short corner knows more about basketball than Jim Boeheim, and Tom Izzo, Where do you rank against Coach K, John Wooden and Dr. James Naismith?
Newell > Wooden ftr and possibly the GOAT.

If anyone wants to discuss video where Syracuse is playing match up I'm game.  The Beilein video I posted earlier is a pretty convincing argument that they don't play match up.  Pitino played match up on and off with Louisville and even implemented it into his FC press (see the Black/White press).  Watch the two side by side and tell me they are the same thing.

I don’t pretend to be a basketball expert, but it seems likely to me that, over 40+ years of coaching, Boeheim has varied his system somewhat from time to time. He’s probably made a few adjustments from year to year, game to game, and possibly even tweaked a few things at halftime now and again. This discussion about what specific style of zone defense “Boeheim plays” seems silly.

Depends on what you mean by varying. Pretty sure every year some reporter writes an article about syracuse maybe using man to man this year. They might see syracuse practicing it and run with it. Has it ever really happened?

These guys aren't talking about a man defense.  They're arguing about Boeheim running a "match-up zone" as opposed to some other slightly different zone defense. For me, its like saying a football team runs a 3-4 defense, but in reality that's just their base and they line up in nickel or dime 80% of the game.

Still trying to figure out why FSU didn't foul last night. Obviously Robinson wasn't the ideal candidate, but even if he makes both, you're still only down 2 3's with ~11 seconds to go.

Are you like 98% likely to lose at that point? Yeah, probably. But its certainly not impossible for FSU to run down, make a 3 with like 6 to go, foul someone (ideally Simpson) immediately on the catch, (and of course, there's the possibility of a steal or a violation or something on the inbounds pass) have him choke at the line and throw up a prayer to try and tie it.

Just bizarre. I certainly dont buy into the idea that the 4.5 point spread is involved, but its just a very odd situation.

I think that Hamilton must not have known what the clock was.  Maybe he thought it was 1 second, not 11.  He may have then realized it after the fact, but didn't want to admit how dumb he was, so he had all these weird blustery explanations to distract from that.

Hamilton's act when Dana Jacobson pressed him on that was pretty terrible.

KenPom has had Duke rated a few points better than Kansas pretty much all season.
I'll still take a veteran guard oriented team over the streaky Grayson Allen and the puppies.   Duke better murder them on the glass because if Kansas shoots well, they're going to have a field day against that Duke d.

Michigan has played 1 good game in the tourney and is headed to the final 4. I will take it.
Their defense is what makes them different from past years. They would have got killed in round 2, they may have even lost in the 1st round, but that defense is so good. Best of luck to the other team from Michigan the rest of the way! :P

Agreed. It's easy to say they have gotten lucky playing bad teams but those bad teams looked against other teams. Michigan is probably playing the best defense of any team in the country right now. Their opponents continuously look inept on offense.

I find this sentiment odd. "Best of luck to FSU" is something I would never say for any reason.

I have a friend that is an Auburn fan that loves Nick Saban. I just can't wrap my head around that. Well technically I can't wrap my head around anybody being able to stand Saban, but especially an Auburn fan.

Capella and frosty think Isiah Thomas and Larry Bird would be bench guys in “today’s NBA.”

Hilarious and ignorant

Simpson is a great defender, Rachman very good.

Matthews is a really good..tough player. UK could have used a guy like that.

10 years ago I would have been the same way, but my husband likes Michigan over State. He does root for State too, but never when they play. Also a lot of my family and friends are Michigan fans. I guess as I have gotten older I see no reason to hate on the other team, they played better than us this year. In the end it is just basketball or football and I feel like I am rooting for the state of Michigan to do well.

Yeah I don't see why anyone would "hate" an in-state rival. I want MSU to be successful.

Michigan has had one of the ugliest paths to the final four ever.   But a physical hustling tenancious defense doesn't always make for a pretty game.    Michigan in turn has played against some very good defensive teams.   Texas A&M and Florida State were both teams that were playing better than their seed.  Michigan is going to have to have both sides clicking to win theNational championship, especially if they make it to the finals where they will have to beat a powerhouse team like Duke or Kansas.

It looks like it is going to take a perfect game for someone to beat Villanova. This is their title to lose.

This Nova-Tech game is a snoozer.   Tough to watch Tech try to play offense. :bag:   Hopefully the Kansas Duke game isn't such a :toilet:

Haven't seen Villanova play much this year, they always this bad shooting 3's?

They look real good at everything else.
No they are normally good at the three ball.  Texas Tech is the third best defensive team in the country though.  Villanova looks really good in every aspect of the game, I think I would consider them the NC favorite at this point.

:goodposting:  Nova checks a lot of boxes.  The three-pointers aren't falling today, but they are making for it by shooting a lot of ones and controlling the glass.

:lmao:

edit: sorry, they are one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the country and supposedly statistically one of the best offenses of all time.
