It was interesting for about 10 minutes but no way was I going to watch for 5 hours.

Yeah we moved to gymnastics

They’re always looking for the obscure, like “hey let’s watch women’s sculls or doubles badminton” which is cool for awhile until it isn’t .

Props to Kirani James (Grenada) in the men's 400m semi for going out of his way after the race to fist bump all the other contestants.

That 400 m hurdles final was insane. Even the Silver's time beat the old WR by 0.5 sec.

I've read a few articles, as I didn't see the event, but is the gist of it the U.S. women's soccer team got beat 1-0 by Canada, and Canada's only shot on goal was the penalty kick that resulted in their 1 point?

Yep....

That was unreal. I ran 55m and 100m hurdles in school. I can't imagine a human running 400m hurdles in under 46 seconds and yet that guy just did

alright thanks you convinced me to pause sailing, watching the replay now

45.94

lowered it 0.76

not knowing anything about the athletes prerace, when I saw him punching himself I thought “that dude is on crank or sumtin”

then he did the hulk thing post race and tore his own jersey off

well anyway let’s just believe he had an amazing day

from Twitter

Best 400m times in the world this year...

1. 43.85 Randolph Ross (USA)

2. 43.88 Kirani James (GRN)

...

142. 45.94* Karsten Warholm (NOR)

*with ten hurdles in his way 🤯

Yay 🇨🇦!

US dialed it up on defense to finish the second half, tied at 43. They shot it about as poorly as possible, so that's very encouraging.

- waiting on a Brasil goal here like patience on a monument.

looks like Mexico is gonna force this into ET -

Yeah...obviously I am in no way an olympic athlete.  I ran 400m in HS and was pretty good then.  That time is absolutely nuts to me without hurdles...doing it with is crazy insane.  And the Warholm guy looking like he is pulling away/speeding up at the end of that (may just be the American was gassed and slowing)...it was awesome.  That guy went out with a style I used to try running with...go out fast and hope you can hold on making everyone chase you.  Except he is super successful at it.

I ran 100 and 300 hurdles in high school and the 400. I was very good, we were superstars to break 59 in the 400 with no hurdles. This dude would have beat our State Champion by nearly 100 meters.

I was good (3rd best in Knoxville my senior year by a tiny amount from top 2). Got caught in the last strides by a rival and had a teammate who was incredibly fast took first by just a little over me and the other guy.  51 flat was my best relay split. 52.2 was I think my fastest individual.  relay we were very good…excellent when our superstar would run with us (but he was usually a 100m and 200m runner then would switch around on some relays or the open 400).

Pretty good second half for the men’s team. If Durant is hitting them like that it’s over.
They really started to crank it up on D, which allowed them to get out in transition, and it was curtains at that point. Spain was collapsing whenever we got into the paint, so just tons of open looks. Rubio seriously played the game of his life. US would have won by 20+ if it weren't for him going bonkers.

The remaining 4 games should be awesome. This is by far the deepest bball tourney of the Dream Team era. If the US win, it will be well deserved.

I'm seeing US favored by 15.5 against the Aussies - that's laughable imo. I probably won't bet it, I'm invested enough without money on the line, but I love the Aussies getting that many points.

EDIT: 15.5 is the line for the women, who play Australia in the quarters tonight. The US men are favored by 10 in the semis. That makes a lot more sense.

Thanks for all the updates, guys (and gals)! Just back from vacation so wasn't able to keep up and post at the same time, but have been watching the breaking news updates.

I'd just like to say, and eat some crow on, the Covid situation at the games. I'm very impressed how they've managed it. From what I've read, it's absolutely due to the measures they have taken, such as frequent testing and stringent isolation and contact tracing. Well done, IOC (or whoever is in charge of that). Gold medal for your efforts there.

Yeah even if he didn't hulk his jersey in half, I would have still thought the same as you. That time is just unreal. Some say the innovations in the track materials and even the shoes is leading to these world records being smashed. Sure maybe. If it was completely natural, that's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in track and field, just as astonishing and impressive as Bolt's 9.58 in the 100m. These are times that are out of this world. Simply amazing.

IMO, that's still a pretty big line for the ladies.

I’m a huge Cycling fan, so I am a bit of a cynic.  Take this with a grain of salt.

Testing during the pandemic began is 45% of normal. That means, for athletes so inclined to do so, they could train harder with quicker recovery times using PED’s.

I am not an expert. I’m just like you, just a guy reading stuff on the Internet.

In 2013, Karsten Walholm was running the 200 sprint in 22.25, which would be a very good h.s. time in America. A year later he was running world class sub-47 second 400s. It was a remarkable progression.

Lot of allegations out there, no proof. He does come from a country (Norway) which has a history of systemic doping in several different sports. Not as bad as ROC but way worse than most. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe people are just jealous. He’s tested clean for 8 years.

If it was clean, that race last night was one of the greatest in history, at any distance.

Same, I'm a huge cynic. I'll assume it was clean unless proven otherwise. But it's like hitting 70 home runs instead of 49. Somehow a guy went from elite athlete to superman. It just makes you wonder.

Some nuggets about events this past weekend:

  • In the pool, American Katie Ledecky became one of the most decorated female swimmers in Olympic history, picking up her sixth individual gold. Ledecky is undefeated in every 800-meter freestyle race she's competed in over the past 11 years and sits behind only Michael Phelps in swimming gold medals. Separately, Australian swimmer Emma McKeon tied the women's record for most medals in any event in a single Olympics, picking up seven (four gold, three bronze).
  • On the men's side, American Caeleb Dressel joined Phelps and legend Mark Spitz as the only US men's swimmers to win at least three individual gold medals in the same Olympics (he tacked on two more team gold medals).
  • On the track, Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah extended the country's sprinting dominance, posting a 10.61-second 100-meter dash. The time topples a 33-year-old Olympic record set by Florence Griffith Joyner. Thompson-Herah—who celebrated short of the finish line (see video)—was joined by teammates Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson, with Jamaica sweeping the podium in the event.
  • Italy's Lamont Marcell Jacobs took over the title of World's Fastest Man following the retirement of Usain Bolt, posting 9.8 seconds in the men's 100-meter dash.

Two straight hours of swimming in a pool is nuts, but to do so in open water?  A different level of insane.  Unbelievable fitness for those athletes.
I had to turn the volume down. The announcer yelling while everything happens sooo slowly was annoying.

“She’s making her move!!!”

*losses two places *

USA won the first women's gold in the 800 m in over 50 years.
Jarmila Kratochvílová's 1:53.28 back in 1983 when the Eastern Block countries were all doping like crazy is one of the records I thought would never fall, at least in my lifetime.

Caster Semenya had a shot at it but I'm not sure that  would've/should've counted if it had. Athing Mu running 1:55.21 at 19 years old may have a shot.

Usain Bolt's 200 meter may be in jeopardy in a few years. 17 year old Erriyon Knighton has already broken Bolt's under 18 and under 20 World Records. He's already run 19.84 and ran 20.02 in the semi's tonight while looking sideways the last 75 meters. Kid just finished his junior year in high school
