They don't dislike Mazzulla, but they don't understand what Ime did that was so awful that he can coach the Nets but not the Celtics. I admit I wonder that myself. It's unclear what the players know (or think they know) about what Udoka did (or didn't do).

i obviously have no idea what Ime did but the Nets have a much higher risk tolerance at this point as they try to salvage their dumpster fire.

"We hear a lot about "culture" with companies, kind of an amorphous term. Today I heard what I thought was a fascinating definition of culture: "Culture is the worst behavior an organization will tolerate." Clear and accountable. And yes, I thought of the Commanders and Nets."

Sounds like Celtics simply set the bar higher than the Nets.

The more I try connecting the few dots we have to connect, the more I think that someone internal to the Celtics was none too pleased about what was going on and threatened to expose state secrets or file a huge lawsuit unless Ime was removed from the organization. That's the only thing I can come up with that would make him toxic in Boston but not in Brooklyn. Think about it. If Ime did whatever he did, and the party or parties involved went to management / ownership. Potentially they knew about it, ignored it, and let the situation continue. Very bad look with potential liability concerns.

I get the feeling that the Nets put up the entirety of the donation and tried to help Kyrie out by attaching his name and he could not humble himself enough just to say a few key words to the press to put the entire thing to bed.

Now if he digs in, it could get really ugly.

i'm familiar with this shtick. some people can know absolutely that they are wrong, or mis-spoke, or said something they should not have in certain company.. whatever... but they are never, ever, ever, ever, ever going to say "i was wrong". never. ever. never.

never. confronting him about it just makes him dig his heels in even deeper. he is never, ever, ever going to believe he has done anything wrong.
 
The way that press release is worded - I think he's done with the Nets. He's not going to complete whatever "objective remedial measures" they put in front of him. Guy is dumber than a box of rocks.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like the straw that gets him released/traded. Not a good look in general and definitely not in a place like Brooklyn.

Strictly looking at the situation from a contractual basis, Irving is an expiring contract making 37 million this year. He also has a 15 percent trade kicker, so as "salary ballast" in a potential trade, he's close to impossible to trade at this point. The projectible salary matching options with the other 29 teams is close to impossible ( i.e. they would only take in an expensive veteran to put them over the top, but the loss of players needed to aggregate 42.5 million would mean that team would be stripped of so much talent, that it would be pointless to trade for a player meant to push them over the top in the first place. )

The Nets could stretch Irving's contract, so that would be three years at 12.4 million in terms of dead cap hit.

If the Nets put him on waivers, what kind of team has 37 million in open cap space to absorb that contract? He'd clear waivers.

If Irving is not traded but waived or released or negotiates a buyout, or under the Chris Bosh Rule, negotiates a medical release ( Good luck trying to deal with insurance companies with that kind of claim as the CBA has close to no provisions based on mental health) , then he loses his full Bird Rights in the process. That creates a limiting factor in getting onto a new team that is a contender unless he signs for the Designated Veteran's Minimum Exception ( i.e. the vets minimum)

Irving's agent is his mother in law and he is her only NBA client. So he can't be dropped from a large representation agency.

Can Adam Silver and NBA HQ and Joe Tsai and the Nets rescind Irving's contract? Unlikely. The Ron Artest/Malice In The Palace situation set precedent that the NBPA will have no choice but to consider. Ben Simmons and the Sixers and Kawhi Leonard with the Spurs will be talked about, but likely won't apply. The Jason Giambi/New York Yankees situation will be another precedent in Irving's favor. You cannot suspend someone indefinitely without pay without league and commissioner review. You cannot stack short term suspensions as means to proxy suspend someone for a season without league and commissioner review. These are protections that Irving has in the active CBA.

Irving is getting paid not to play. He will likely be paid out not to play for the rest of this contract. That's the technical and logistical reality of this situation. I'm not getting into what Irving actually said or didn't say or that part of this controversy. People can decide for themselves if they feel Irving's decision was "smart" or not.

Again, let's look at this from a legal basis, sports law basis and contractual basis.

In late 2020, during the "NBA Bubble", in late August, every team and every player in said Bubble refused to play. Why does that matter? In order not to fine every team and every player there, who did that, and were eligible to play (injured players could only be punished for not showing up to the court itself) , Adam Silver had to give everyone a formal amnesty. Because "accrued service time" impacts potential player pensions, post retirement health benefits and league contract incentives. Even if it's just one game. Even if it's just one minute. It needs to be documented and formalized.

This happened under the broad authority of the Commissioner's Office, at his discretion, overriding the then CBA and all team's individual contract provisions. So now, if the Nets attempt to send Irving home for good, with or without pay, Irving can say Silver has established himself as the overall authority on whom can and cannot play while "medically cleared", even overriding team's internal and individual contract provisions, and that he should be weighed against the standards of the Chris Bosh Rule, and not the Commissioner's discretion. Players who are suspended do not earn league service time. That Irving is already a league fully vested veteran is irrelevant here. The dispute has to account for all NBA players now and in the future, not just Irving.

If Silver and Mark Tatum are nuts enough to allow Irving in front of a league medical review board, i.e. when a franchise and a player are in dispute over his medical clearance to play, then the Ron Artest precedent comes into play. David Stern did not follow through on his fines and financial penalties for Artest, which was meant to salve some PR controversy at the time, but it lends issues into how mental health is a giant grey zone in the CBA, even the active current one, and that the review board was designed for physical capability only since there are no formal league standards for mental health. ( This is why Ben Simmons/76ers conflict was a huge problem for the NBPA) Then any dispute over a suspension pushes into the purview of the ADA 1990.

In terms of general sports law, IIRC, the MLBPA filed suit on behalf of Terry Pendleton against the Cincinnati Reds, this was in the mid 90s and post Atlanta years, when Pendleton was put on the injured list without him actually being injured, and he was told he couldn't travel with the team nor practice nor engage in team functions while he was on the injured list. The design was for the front office to call up another player without dropping anyone from their then 40 man roster.

The 2020 NBA Bubble is a hot mess for this current situation when it comes to players who are considered medically cleared to play. The Nets aren't required to play Irving on the court during games. But to ban him from team activities and from the practice facility at a certain point requires league review. As soon as it crosses Adam Silver's desk, and he affirms that Irving be banished, then Irving has a potential suit on his hands. That Silver has stated in public that he is going to "meet" with Irving, but clearly he didn't with other players and other controversies does not help his cause. Of course Irving could just sit at home and not bother. But what if he decides to make this as ugly as possible from a CBA related stand point?

100% Kanye and Kyrie have amplified this. Twitter is a cesspool. I have a few "friends" who believe this as well as flat-earth and other conspiracies and they are feeling vindication and being loud.

I agree he will come back but I think everyone seems to know he did not write the apology (he writes enough online to see that he does not construct sentences like that).

Steven A. just reported the Nets ownership is completely done with him but are also stuck with the contract.

I expect he will play but the Nets were already a bit of a dumpster fire and this situation is unlikely to help them turn things around.

Kyrie is really running the full playbook. Flat earth, anti vaxxer, this latest thing and god knows how many others.

And this is a guy who will tell anyone who will listen that he is the smartest guy in the room. And I think he really believes it. Very cringe worthy.
