Source: The Raiders are closing in on signing free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu to a 2-year deal. More details coming soon.
JeffSimon is a fake twitter account. Saw the same thing and looked into it. They got former beat writer Jerry McDonald with the same tweet.

A safety like Mathieu would be a great acquisition, if they can land one of the top remaining CBs like Darious Williams the secondary suddenly looks a lol better.

Playing Abram closer to the front seven feels like it would absolutely play to his strength. Blitzer, spy, covering TEs & intimidating crossing routes. That could be scary.

Doh

I didn't know who that was but I don't follow ESPN much so I figured that could be why his name didn't ring a bell.

When asked about Abram, he did mention something about not being worried about position and moving guys closer to the line etc. I expect Abram to be more like that third LB in the old 4-3 defenses in their "base" nickle D.

Twitter is having a meltdown

basic tweet reads

''Lol my #Raiders and #Yankees having same approach…just stay away from free agency…wtf''

Dude... from the Rapsheet...

Former #Rams DT Sebastian Joseph-Day is expected to sign with the #Chargers, source said. He gets a 3-year deal worth $24M with $15M fully guaranteed. LAC doing work.

Rapsheet...

Source: The #Broncos agreed to terms with DT DJ Jones on a 3-year, $30M deal with $20M fully guaranteed. Big addition.

It is looking like we may get Gilmore. SF likely out now so the reportedly contenders are us and the Jets. A lot of smoke we are close.

I think the move here is to offer a mid rounder for Laviska.
LAVISKA SHENAULTWR, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

ESPN's Michael DiRocco reports the Jaguars may be open to trading WR Laviska Shenault.

The Jaguars loaded up on free agent pass catchers on Monday, inking Christian Kirk, Evan Engram, and Zay Jones. Doug Pederson is the second straight Jacksonville head coach who seems less-than-enamored with Shenault, a fantasy football folk hero whose best chance at success might be elsewhere. Shenault -- a dual threat wideout -- in 2021 failed to score a touchdown on 100 targets in the horrendous Jaguars offense. He could be a useful gadget player in an offense with established pass catchers.

Not to start a panic on day 2 of free agency.  But we currently have 3 WRs under contract:  Hunter, Edwards and Tyron Johnson

I’ll take being quiet and patient on the WR front in the early days of free agency instead of overspending on WRs that I personally don’t think are worth it, like some teams have just done.

Every single WR better than Zay Jones now wants 8 mill+ per year. Allen Robinson should expect 20 mill per.

I would not be surprised if there is a little bit of a slowdown, as teams try and explain to agents that the boneheads in JAX don't run every team in the league.

I have no idea what the plan is, but clearing cap, then holding back is a strategy I approve of. Aside from JC Jackson, not really a bunch of signings I am bummed we missed out on.

We only have a 1/31 chance of trading for Laviska, but considering we just brought in a coach who came from a team known for their innovative screen game, and short passing, it's tough not to daydream about it.

By the same token, the Chiefs making a move for him would be a nightmare.

The money spent in Kirk and Zay? I think the Jags are crazy. I wouldn't pay Zay that. Happy for him to get paid elsewhere like thay because I would be unhappy paying him that in Vegas.

Echo.

Except bummed on Chark.

Agreed. I am more concerned with them not addressing the interior D-Line and secondary.

Missed out on several DTs, DBs & LBs.

I wonder how much they are talking with their own D-Line FAs. Jefferson, Thomas & Philon are a credible group that combined for 10 sacks last year.

Philon had a tweet about hoping his second surgery helps with three angry faces... not sounding good with him. Jefferson and Thomas certainly strong possibilities to return

I'm honestly not sure why people are so enamored with Shenault.

It's also not really a position of need with Drake back on board and hopefully Richard too.

They have stoner and turner and 2 dudes you never heard of.

They have 2 interior DL, that didn’t really play last year.  Never heard of either of them. 1 qb. PETERMAN!!!(costanza voice).  At T they have miller and leatherwood and 2 dudes you’ve never heard of.

Gonna be an unpopular opinion but we way overpaid for Maxx and I hate it.  I love the guy and his story and his motor but he's had 10, 7, and 8 sacks for us.  That's worth $24M a year?  Thats only $4M less than TJ Watt. The only saving grace is that the money doesn't guarantee until the new league years so we can get out of it if we want with minimal damage.

He's young and maybe he figures out how to get home and/or maybe the new secondary holds coverage long enough to help him but man if he's not getting 15 sacks we're going to be hating that contract in no time flat.

Can't look solely at the sack numbers.  I believe he led the league in QB pressures.  That's really impressive especially playing in a defensive scheme that never blitzed.  He probably hasn't even hit his ceiling yet.  I think his extension was a great deal for the Raiders.
