It is an unpopular opinion, I think, because it comes off as a little one dimensional.  Sacks are the flash stat and tell a very limited story. Crosby lived in opposing backfields last year more than any other DE in the league.  Disrupting QB rhythm and having to be specifically game planned against have tremendous value. He is also excellent at setting an edge and holding up against the run. Not to mention how many times he makes plays downfield where no DL has any business making plays.

He's a bargain at $24 mil per year.

 
I wouldn't mind sleeping through FA so far nearly so much if we had comp picks to protect but what are we looking at here?  Zay is gonna be a 5th or 6th.  If Mariotta were going to get a big offer I think we'd have seen it by now?  We gonna see a 4th there?

I allowed for that, and it's also possible a better secondary will force the QB to hold the ball and help here too.  But did he lead in pressures because he's not good enough to get home?  Watt didn't have as many pressures because he was lying on top of the QB with the ball so darn often.  Big chicken vs. egg potential here and I think with a year left on the contract we didn't have to make this move yet.  Let him play it out and then sign the big deal next year.  Hassan Reddick just same off an 11 sack season and only got $15M a year for three years - that's the kind of move we should be after.

Now with Carr also scheduled to be a FA in 2023 this might be the leverage we didn't have to wait.  This is where the contract really shines, in that we now have the FT to use for Carr and with money guaranteeing year-to-year with Maxx that's excellent flexibility to overpay now for that kind of flexibility later.

I think most people would agree the Crosby extension was at worst a fair deal.  I'm thrilled with it.

More likely because the Raiders rushed four on the vast majority of their defensive snaps.

Maybe. Also keep in mind, NE has always liked to have several RB's and has been a perpetual RBBC for pretty much ever. Also, Ingold is gone and I believe Richard is a FA. I don't know how costly he would be. James White resigned and it wasn't a big deal. 

 
The measured approach to Free Agency is the way to go. Sign and/or plan for signing your own core talent first. Then, only pounce on elite talents, and otherwise find value.

I really like the deal the Lions gave Chark. One year, $10 MM, with incentives to make it $12 MM. If he blows up you either decide to pay or franchise him next year. And if you let him go instead, you get a top comp pick.

Maxx contract is an absolute gem - for both sides. He gets a giant immediate payday and added security - Raiders get him at reasonable money for his production for the next 2-3 years and flexibility to get out of the deal as early as two years from now without a monster cap hit. Big money doesn't come into play until years 4-5 and by then Maxx will either be worth that money or he won't and they'll adjust the terms or move him.

Barring and blessing him from injury, I believe he'll more than live up to this deal. And will be satisfied enough with the later pay bump to play out the entire contract. Total win-win and what I imagined for Mack years ago as our defensive franchise player.

I'm thinking Bolden is being brought in to replace Richard.

I know all of that.  His last deal with NE was for 3.7M. I just think the money should be spent elsewhere.  Other than the OL, I’m not too worried about the offense. The D needs help. Badly

On the surface, yes. I don’t know bolden that well. Is he a pass blocking, pass catching back? A quick look at his stats:  he had 41 catches last year, but only had 59 total in the 8 years before that.

The #Raiders are giving safety and special teamer Dallin Leavitt the right of first refusal tender as a restricted FA ($2.43 million). Former undrafted FA had 35 tackles last season and played 22 percent of the snaps on D last year, including one start.

Last year should be bolded as well, since Bolden played for the Raiders new Head Coach, last year. ;)

 
Cowboys are desperate to trade La'el Collins, and may be forced to cut him if they can't find a partner. With all these AFC West defensive additions, maybe the Raiders could trade down somewhere in the late rounds with the Cowboys to take Collins off their hands. Cash and cap hits for Collins for the next three years would be $10 MM per year with no dead cap should the Raiders release him. LC could be slotted right in at RT, allowing Leatherwood to stay and grow at RG.

Perhaps an ingold replacement is more accurate then.  Either way, a body had to brought in to replace ingold and Richard. I just didn’t want to pay too much for that replacement.

Something smart, along these lines would make me happy. 

 
At this moment the rest of the division has gotten much stronger (Den & SD), or remained strong (KC). I like Gilmore and hope they bring him in but it's nowhere near enough help and the Raiders don't have enough draft capital to fill all their needs.

Speaking of the draft, I bet every penny in my pockets right now that Ziegler trades down from #22.

 
Don't be fooled by Mariota not being signed. The rest of the league is waiting to see where Deshaun lands.  After that Mariota, Jameis and probably Garappolo will find their new homes in short order.

It could also signal the end for Jacobs in Vegas. They already restructured Drake's contract so we know he's probably going to be there. I bet come May 2nd (I think) they dont exercise the 5th year option on him. I will say with confidence they won't exercise any 5th year option on the 2019 draft class. Cle, Abram and Jacobs are probably playing their last year for the Raiders.

Seriously though, 

Hicks might be a sneaky pick up. He was a beast in Chicago for years before injuries started derailing him. If he's healthy,  he could bring some stout-ness to the DL which needs it badly.

Two of either Gilmore, Williams or Mathieu.

Then maybe kick the tires in Jack for youth but Wagner is still a big improvement for Las Vegas and probably better than Jack for the next year or two.

Nichols & Hicks are interesting but are they really better than Thomas &/or Jefferson?

Fuller is the Bryan Bulaga of WRs, he may be a good player but what's the point if they're not on the field?

I'd be fine re-signing Thomas and Jefferson.  I like both and was just listing players from other teams.

Valid point on Fuller too.  If he could stay on the field he is exactly what the offense could use and is really good when healthy, which is not often.

 
Also a couple veteran pass rushers in Von Miller & Chandler Jones that would be perfect complements to rotate in and sustain a pass rush for four quarters.

I love Fuller. I would guess that his per complete game stats are impressive. I just imagine that he is effectively a Ruggs repeat, without the horrific tragedy, seven games then gone for the year.

I am a ND fan and have followed him from those days on. 

Great down field threat. He just can not stay on the field at all. If we got a cheap deal near vet min with incentives, throw the dice, but for money anywhere close to fair market value for his talent level? No thanks.

Yea, other than the last two years at age 65 he didn't have much of an injury history to worry about.

My Honey Badger dream got a bump. NO was supposed to be the destination, and they signed Maye. His leadership/vibe would be great for the secondary.

Two DBs, that's all I ask. 

Mathieu, Gilmore & D.Williams seem like the best remaining targets.
