2023-24 NBA (Playoffs!) Thread: Message board poster furiously types out one more horrible post before thread closes (1 Viewer)

In a perfect world, the reigning champs and current conference leaders would get two representatives before anyone else to exemplify the team concept.
The simple solution is to expand the All-Star game roster from 12 to 15 players (or maybe even more). I am pretty sure the players wouldn't care . . . many of them get bonuses for being named an All Star. I'm also sure some of the vets aren't really that interested in playing a ton or aggravating an injury, so I don't see why there would be much push back to expanding the rosters. The game has devolved into a three-point shooting competition (168 3P attempts this year) and playing defense is frowned upon. Each year, there are a few guys that want to put up a big stat line, but I don't see why they couldn't even put an unwritten cap on playing time at 20 minutes. That would free up some playing time for the extra players on the roster.
Potentially. But this year three additional "deserving" players could have made the West roster (e.g. Fox, Sabonis, Markkanen) and still not addressed the issue I'm raising.

It should be "on brand" for the NBA to celebrate winning team play. If you're going to take two all-stars from one team, start with the winners.

Jamal was more than deserving this year, as was AG last year when Denver had an 5-game lead at the break.

No matter how they do it, there will always be players that get left off. I understand your reasoning and don't think it's the worst idea in the world, but what happens when one team that wasn't in the finals season before and has two All-NBA players on it? Dame and Giannis. LeBron and AD. Tatum and Brown. Maybe the solution is they expand the rosters, and the championship team automatically gets 2 players (which sounds like what you are advocating for).

Regarding the all star game:

As a Celtics fan, we all know Denver is a formidable foe. The Nuggets won a nail biter in Boston when the Celtics didn't shoot very well (42/31/71). The good news in that game was Boston held a slim lead in the last 4 minutes, only turned the ball over twice all game, and only gave up one point in the final three minutes. The bad news is, that despite all that, they still didn't win.

Last night, they once again didn't shoot well (45/28/64), yet Tatum had a chance to give them the lead with a wide-open corner three with 45 seconds left (and missed). Denver made two buzzer beaters that accounted for 5 points. No doubt DEN executed better last night, but Boston again was in it until the very end. "Almost winning" sounds very much like losing, and there are no moral victories.

I wasn't a fan of the officiating last night. I'm not saying one team was affected more than the other. It just seemed that some players on either team going to the basket got mugged and no fouls were called. Many trips, the offensive players initiated contact to move a defender out of the way, and there wasn't a call (Brown and Joker did this a lot). Yet other times, guys barely bumping each other 20-30 feet from the basket would draw whistles. As a fan, I don't care if refs want to "let them play" or if they want to "call things tight," I just wish they called things the same consistently.
denver shot 19% from 3pt line. celtics had 3 more ft tries.

Mind boggling that the Nuggets only had one player on the all-star team
are you saying that they should have had more or that their ability to reach such high levels with only one all-star is mind-boggling?
Both, really. But more the former.

Each of the other four Denver starters consciously subordinate their individual stats for the team concept.

Jamal Murray in particular has multiple 50+ point playoff games (one of only 8 players in NBA history). However, there is no way the Nuggets would be where they are if Murray insisted on being the scorer he is clearly capable of being.

In a perfect world, the reigning champs and current conference leaders would get two representatives before anyone else to exemplify the team concept. This year, inferior teams including the Lakers, Suns and Clippers all had two.

But of course I understand the realities of the selection process.
I think Murray has ramped it up after AS voting. I don't think he necessarily deserved to be selected. At the same time, I think he'll be close to deserving of an All-NBA nod if he keeps this up.

Hmm. That's gonna be a tough one considering he can only miss one more game in these last 19 games (assuming my math is correct, which may be a poor assumption)

Great finish in Cleveland. Gobert = idiot but some great Wolves D down the stretch.
Weak tech call there. NBA refs are such babies
Didn’t he do the money thing with his fingers to the ref (basically accusing him of fixing the game)? That’s pretty much a guaranteed tech no matter what point of the game it is. Plus, he was complaining about a call that was 100% correct (he mugged the Cavs player). He doubled down after the game saying gambling is affecting how games are refereed. He’ll be getting a nice fine for that.

$100k fine

The sad part is he makes $500,000 per game, so the fine amounts to what would essentially be considered a parking ticket (0.002% of his annual salary).

I don't think that math checks out.

He got fined $100,000. His annual salary is $41 million.

gotta move the decimal point

Piston GM Troy Weaver sat in the stands and a fan tells him "You suck at your job" Weaver threatens to kick his *** and then gets the guy who is a season ticket holder ejected from the arena. Nobody goes to the Piston games and he kicks out a season ticket holder.

Piston are 10-53 in Weavers 4th season as GM. 70-230 overall. The fan was not lying.

James Dolan has found his next GM.

LOL at you guys (and gals). I haven't checked this thread since yesterday, and I come back in to learn that my math really was off. Now, if we were on accountingguys.com or mathguys.com, then I would admit to being a total dufus and worthy of public mockery. But we are posting in a BASKETBALL thread on a FOOTBALL site. I wear my 210 SAT exam math score with pride and as a badge of honor. Guess I will have to start posting in the forum on mathfordummies.com, where my limitations would be met with positivity and encouragement that someday I might learn and be able to do better. #mathematicallychallenged

a kid that went to my HS transferred to another across town.

when we played them in sports a decent number of kids would chant his ACT score. it literally broke him. he was good against everyone else. but when playing his former school the ACT chant just ruined him.

it was rough to watch. felt bad for the guy because he was a nice dude, just dumb.

Alpe Sengun out with a bad knee and ankle injury toward the end of the win versus the Kings. Left in a wheelchair. Hope it's not as serious as it looked because he's the nucleus of this Houston team: https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/39703604

Dude was coming off some amazing games lately putting up 45/16/5 (steals) against Wemby and 23/19/14 against the Clippers :kicksrock:
Now being reported as just a bad ankle sprain and a bone bruise, fortunately

Probably will be shut down for the year but that is kind of an amazing result. I thought for sure he was ****ed.

Huge sigh here. Love that kid. If Amen can learn to shoot they can be quite a dynamic tandem.

The Nuggets looked like absolute **** in the first half against the Raptors last night and were down 22 at one point but posted something like a 165 ORtg in the second half to win by 6.

Jokic put up one of his craziest stat lines of his career - 35 points, 17 rebounds, 12 assists, 6 steals, 2 blocks

He's such a savant. I've been trying to teach my son the value of just consistently making the right play every time and Jokic is the poster child for that.

There are so many games within the game and he clearly works on all of them. I know I've pointed it out before, but the quickness with which he decides to not contest a shot and instead position for the rebound is something I've never seen before. Rebounding is one of the most overlooked things in basketball today but can absolutely make or break a game. Blocking out, off-ball defensive positioning, defensive communication, ball movement, off-ball movement, etc. are all things that kids nowadays don't even think about, much less practice and work on. Also shot selection gets pushed down the list as kids work for that Tik-Tok highlight more than a higher PPP shot. I've heard good coaches talk about "winning" plays and that is what Jokic does time after time.

I wish Tatum would figure that out a little bit more. Sometimes I see it and sometimes he reverts back to a juvenile game and just coasts on his high skill set. Jordan focused on the little things, Magic, Stockton, Isaiah, and Bird as well. Those guys had skill, but their ability to win the smaller battles throughout a game and improve those around them made them greater than even their own skillsets.

I like what Jaylen has been doing lately and what Tatum did last night. They both were going hard to the rack and either making layups or getting fouled most of the time. Of course, it helps when they make the free throws. But much more aggressive, pushing the ball down the court, and backing guys down and imposing their will to get 3- to 5- foot shots. Even when they don't go in, the opponent still has a long way to get to the basket and whoever else is on the court typically does a decent job slowing down the break.

Where things start to go off the rails is when these two start chucking up threes off of iso looks in late game situations, miss badly, and then the other team goes off to the races on a long rebound without anyone back. The closeout strategy should just be to either pick and roll teams to death or go four corners and have Tatum or Brown just drive the lane. That makes way more sense then dribbling out the shot clock and chucking up a buzzer beating, off balanced heave. They should also continue to use KP / Holiday / White as well . . . but not always just on three pointers. I have never understood why they don't use the same action that got them the lead in the last 5 minutes.

I don't think anybody had seen it before which is why he was consistently being called a terrible defender while his defensive advanced stats have always been relatively high. Making that decision also keeps him out of foul trouble which is very hard to qualify with advanced stats, but he's only fouled out of two games in the last 5 regular seasons (although he's been ejected a couple times as well).
