Potentially. But this year three additional "deserving" players could have made the West roster (e.g. Fox, Sabonis, Markkanen) and still not addressed the issue I'm raising. The simple solution is to expand the All-Star game roster from 12 to 15 players (or maybe even more). I am pretty sure the players wouldn't care . . . many of them get bonuses for being named an All Star. I'm also sure some of the vets aren't really that interested in playing a ton or aggravating an injury, so I don't see why there would be much push back to expanding the rosters. The game has devolved into a three-point shooting competition (168 3P attempts this year) and playing defense is frowned upon. Each year, there are a few guys that want to put up a big stat line, but I don't see why they couldn't even put an unwritten cap on playing time at 20 minutes. That would free up some playing time for the extra players on the roster. In a perfect world, the reigning champs and current conference leaders would get two representatives before anyone else to exemplify the team concept.
It should be "on brand" for the NBA to celebrate winning team play. If you're going to take two all-stars from one team, start with the winners.
Jamal was more than deserving this year, as was AG last year when Denver had an 5-game lead at the break.
