Other than the Olympics and the World Cup, what other sports determine third place?

For the World Cup, the main reason they do this is because large groups of fans have travelled from around the world, booked hotel rooms, etc. Its somewhat of a concession to give the fans of the two losing teams one more game so if you've traveled in to see the final four you know you're getting at least two games regardless.

Forgot to mention that I have seen multiple videos of Porzingas at practice. He is back playing 5 on 5. Also been working him a ton on pick and pops and three pointers from all different spots on the perimeter. He seems to be running and jumping normally (granted, none of the players are playing in game mode at full effort). Still a good sign.
Appreciate all the stats - love some of this stuff being collated in one spot.

Porzingis I think has no a, btw.

I think KP is a bigger deal here than is being touted (or maybe there's more media on it than I'm aware of). Boston is an open parade to the rim for this Mavs team if they don't have him. And on offense, pulling Lively or Gafford out away from the basket is critical to getting in there. I think Boston could win without him, but it's much closer to a 50/50 series to me if he reinjures or isn't all there in some meaningful way.
Just so you know, I am not anti-Dallas. Luka is my son's favorite player. We actually have a giant painting of him in our house. He's conflicted, as Boston is his favorite (and local) team. He picked BOS v. DAL in the Finals weeks before the playoffs even started. I like Luka . . . Kyrie not so much (since he ditched the C's, plus he's an odd duck).
Didn't think you were, didn't think I implied it, apologies if so.

Meant a sincere good to see all these things in one place.

I'm obviously super pro-Dallas, but that doesn't mean all facts that indicate Boston is a better team should be ignored for #FANDOM

I think I see a path to Dallas winning, but they are rightfully underdogs.

Soccer also has much different culture with multiple different cups and friendlies and reasons for playing and is generally much less focused on the ultimate champion in a tournament bracket.

Round 1 of the draft will be on Wednesday June 26 at 8:00. They are splitting the 2 rounds for the first time and the 2nd round is on Thursday the 27th at 4:00. Sort of a curious time for the second round.

Maybe they expect the ratings to be low enough that they don’t want to have it in prime time. By the second half of the second round, it’s pretty meaningless.

True, but it seems weird that they are splitting it up just to do it that way. I guess that they will get a lot more traction on social media and the talking head shows with it spread out, so maybe that’s part of it.

The teams wanted a break between rounds to work out trades. That was part of the reasoning as well.

Maybe the league can get rid of the draft pick trades where players are wearing incorrect team hats. Also, graphics all night of players on teams other than the one they'll play on.

It's 2024 NBA, figure it out. It's beyond stupid at this point.

It really shouldn't be that hard. Just assume the trades are good. Way fewer guys with the wrong hat even if every now and again one ends up not going through.

There’s a debate that night so they’re trying to avoid that.
Take it to the PSF
I think he’s referencing the ESPN post-draft coverage where Stephen A, Wilbon, and Perkins will be debating MJ vs Kobe vs LeBron for five hours. Can’t have any picks interrupting that.

But then how could people post all these "Did you know XYZ team traded this star player?!" for normal draft day trades.

Anarchy might have already posted this in his litany of stats, but I just saw this elsewhere:

The Celtics join the 2011 and 2013 Heat as the only Eastern Conference teams favored entering the Finals in the 26 years since Michael Jordan's Bulls.
I hadn't seen that. Nick Wright had something yesterday about teams advancing to the Finals without a player that finished in the Top 3 in MVP voting for the season. I forget how many teams there were, but none of them had won in the past 30 years . . . like 0-13. On the flip side, the season leader in scoring hadn't won a title since 2000.

Say what?

Golden State won in 2022 over Boston. Steph finished 7th in MVP voting.
Milwaukee beat Phoenix in 2021. Giannis finished 4th in MVP voting.
Toronto beat Golden State in 2019. Kawhi finished 9th in voting

What am I missing here? Steph did not finish in the top 3 in voting, yet Golden State won. Giannis did not yet Milwaukee won. Etc.

I probably heard it wrong. Maybe he meant Top 3 in MVP voting at any point. Using your examples, Steph and Giannis were former MVPs and Kawhi had come in 2nd before.

Sorry

Detroit team in 2003 - 2004. Don't think any of those dudes ever finished in top 3 in MVP voting in any year

My bad. Detroit was the only team that won. Here is the full list:

Made NBA Finals without a player ever in Top 3 MVP voting (since 1994):

2024 BOS - ???
2023 MIA - L
2022 BOS - L
2020 MIA - L
2009 ORL - L
2005 DET - L
2004 DET - W
2000 IND - L
1999 NYK - L
1996 SEA - L
1994 NYK - L

Total overall: 1-9

My apologies for the confusion and lack of clarity.

Shouldn't game 3 be Thursday not game 1
No
Ok. I mean I usually like the NBA finals done before July but cool I guess.
Game 7 is schedule for June 23rd. What exactly are you hoping to watch in late June anyway?
My birthday means nothing to you? Rude AF, sir. Rude AF.
Are you suggesting we should be watching your birthday?
Only if you like dot videos!
