I can't find where I read that a franchise player could be given a larger salary or bonus in the franchise year, after the deadline passes, so long as it's not more than one year. I am doubting that premise now, but even if it's not the case of being able to do that post-July 15, they could've offered the option pre-deadline as an olive branch to keep the player happy. E.g...
Offer 1 - long-term deal, with the guarantees at minimum matching the first two years of what would be franchise player money across two seasons (for Jacobs, this would be ~$23 MM guaranteed), with little or no money guaranteed in year three or beyond, given the attrition of the position; or,
Offer 2 - one-yr deal, with a salary bump beyond the $10 MM franchise figure, to let's say $12.5 MM. The benefits the player and the team because now he presumably reports to camp on time, and hopefully is a lot less bitter.
I highly doubt they offered something like the above, given Jacobs cryptic Twitter responses the whole time. He's been basically calling them liars without coming out and spilling all the dirty laundry. This isn't how to treat a franchise player - even an RB - especially one in his mid 20s who absolutely carried the team the year prior. Crosby and Adams are better and more valuable than Jacobs, but Josh was last season's team MVP.
Yes, this post is yet another indictment on the Ronald McDonald show we have running the Raiders now. I hope they prove me wrong. We'll see.
