2024-25 NBA Thread: “we simply must acquire another top-5 player for next year” Laker GM says after game (28 Viewers)

Canada wait
A lot of salty Canadians up here suggesting the officiating was "the worst ever", which I find hard to believe, but I didn't watch and don't really care for BBall, anyway. Just funny reading all the comments on twitter regarding the foul shot disparity and other things.
France got a friendly whistle, but it was much, much closer to a 50/50 whistle than most Lakers games. 😉

France played bully ball inside with Lessort & Yabusele. Canada could have overcame that, but France also got some timely 3's from Fournier & Cordinier. Add in Wemby doing a little bit of everything on defense and France was just the better team today.

Will be interesting to see just how much Serbia sandbagged in the 2 previous matchups. Obviously we know everything will run through joker but you have to think they saved something schematically to try and surprise us when it matters most.

Obviously they should have lost today, but we still need to come out early and build a lead.

Man, I love vacations but it's gonna be tough keeping up with not just this thread but the games themselves when I'm not around a TV much (gone for 4 days starting tomorrow).

We should triple-team Joker with AD, Embiid and Bam and let those other guys whose last names end in 'itch' beat us. Maybe they could?

I assume y’all are being tongue in cheek, but Serbia does have several other NBA guys.
They have 3 other nba players. One has been around a decade and averages 7 points for the Hornets. The other has a name that sounds like Joker’s so people assume he’s good but he’s not. The other is Bogdanovic who is definitely a good player.

Bog was a good player - he’s borderline good now and in this format is fine. He is one of those guys that could get hot and go like 7/9 from 3. He could also go 0/8. There’s no doubt Serbia could win but the US should win by 15-20 again unless they let Joker just totally dominant them.

Reached the game.

40-20 free throw disparity, clear travel on wemby as he falls to the floor and gets up and scores and no call, key part of the game Murray clearly has his arm smacked and ball goes out of bounds... (no call yet they reversed a pretty questionable out of bounds to France earlier)... Dort clearly rips the ball away cleanly in a clutch moment and they call a jump ball where France shockingly has possession arrow.

People are nice up here, if this happened to the USA team and they lost there would be a boycott of the games. It was pretty brutal man. The reffing was fine in the first quarter and Canada got themselves in a huge hole with awful play and some uncanny 3s by France, so that's on them. But that was pretty wild reffing for an Olympic game down the stretch when the home country is trying to hold on for the win. Wild.

I wish the Spurs could have traded for him at a decent price, but this helps in its own way too, as it probably (hopefully) boosts the Jazz into playoff contention. Would be even better if the Jazz ramped up their 2024 efforts even more and dealt some picks to the ATL for Trae Young, allowing ATL to entertain the idea of breaking down the roster to retool even without their own picks.

US is a staggering 27.5 point favorite. Thought it would be 21ish.

That's interesting. Joker alone should close that gap. He won't let them get blown out unless one of his horses are sick.
The lost by 26 last time they played

Apples and oranges. If I was Serbia, I wouldn't play full speed or show my hand in a qualifying round. Joker is not built like Tatum and tends to rise to the occasion. Should be interesting.

Utah is still a lottery team.
Probably, but I think they removed themselves from the top end of next year's draft (Cooper Flagg et al) by resigning Lauri; and, their 2025 FRP is owed to OKC (top-10 protected), further deincentivizing tanking. Maybe they don't make any moves, but if they do, I want it to be with ATL. Gotta admit, Young and Markkanen would complement one another on the floor nicely as roster anchors.

Embiid suffering from ankle soreness, ducking joker once again

Wouldn’t a top 10 protected pick make it more likely they’d tank?

You know, before I typed that I worked out the logic in my head, but damn if I can remember it now, although I know it had something to do with the copious amounts of tanking we are going to witness this season.

Probably rooted in my desire to see Atlanta pushed into the tank too with the Nets and Wizards of the world. Yeah, definitely this.

Somehow now my book is showing 16.5 so either it was really off earlier (wish I hit that then!!) or something happened.

Yeah, all I'm seeing is 15.5-16.5 which honestly makes a lot more sense :kicksrock:
I had the option to bet it at 27 so idk what happened. I have the useless hard rock app fwiw. I did end up betting US -15.5, that looks too low to me.

Seems like a good bet especially after hearing that 27 number. I was thinking they'd be favored by 18-20.

🥖
Worst looking baguette I've ever seen. French man
After the first few minutes, Germany played a horrible game. France showed their hand last game with the non-Gobert rotation, but their hustle and toughness won them the game today. Germany just didn't seem ready for the crowd and intensity needed to win. Which is an odd thing to say bout that squad, their toughness is normally on display.

France being in the gold medal game despite Wemby's shooting woes in the tourney is wild.
