2024-25 NBA Thread: defeated Minnesota fan ready to move on to next crushing disappointment (158 Viewers)

Full trade:

Spurs: De'Aaron Fox, Jordan McLaughlin

Kings: Zach LaVine, Sidy Cissoko, three first round picks (2025 CHA, 2027 SAS, 2031 MIN), three second round picks (2025 CHI, 2028 DEN, 2028 own back)

Bulls: Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter, their own 2025 pick via SAS

Dallas got tired of watching fat Luka gas out in the playoffs and knew he wasn't going to get in better condition as he got older

that's all i got

Yeah Spurs looking like clear winners on paper with this deal. The Charlotte first rounder is off limits with top-14 protection and will be conveyed as 2026 and 2027 2nd rounders.

Spurs still badly need a big who can absorb about 25 minutes a game. Expecting more moves, but less noteworthy.

Spurs imo. Getting a star, keeping your core and only giving up a few 1sts which will likely be mid to late round is

I thought Cissoko looked like an interesting prospect coming out but seems he has done **** all?

The Chicago pick is probably unlikely to convey also

Gafford probably available now. Dallas shipping out fan favorites who are wildly productive for way below market value.

Earmuffs Frosty:

I think that 2031 pick is pretty juicy.

Spurs the obvious winners, Kings get some assets and don't downgrade much if Lavine stays healthy. The Kings quit the last couple of games after Fox's trade demand, the thing I'm interested in is if this reinvigorates them and makes the rest of the season watchable at least.

I think it's a pretty good trade all around.

It was top-10 protected in 2025 draft, and restrictions were relaxed to top-8 protection in 2026 and 2027. Its value was interesting for sure, but it makes navigating the tank a lot simpler for Chicago.

...starting to get a little excited about this.

I love Cissoko, but he's a long shot at best. Well, if he develops a 3, he'll have a nice NBA career. Kind of like me.

Spurs future looking as good or better than the Thunder.

Two young stars that are great fits together in Wemby and Fox

Didn’t have to touch their young core of Castle, Vassel, Keldon, and Sochan

They have tradeable salaries for upgrades this year in Barnes and CP3

They have cap space this year and next (I believe)

They’ve got 6 of their 7 own upcoming 1sts, plus 2 unprotected from Atl (25 and 27) and a few juicy future swaps (including one from a now older Dallas in 2028). The ones they gave up in the Fox deal were the worst of their collection.

Plus everyone is going to want to play with Wemby.

They’re looking great going forward.

If I'm keeping track correctly the Spurs negotiated this deal without letting the Kings off the hook for a 2031 swap. That seems mean.

As a Houston fan, I hate thinking about this. As a source of Texan pride, I was looking forward to the future NBA having the three best teams in this state (and OKC) but Dallas had to make that move.

So what are the fan rules? I've loved Luka since he was an insane 15-year old and we were marveling in the film room wishing he was recruitable. It was amazing that we got to have him in Dallas through a frankly insane turn of events that took three teams being remarkably dumb (about as dumb as Dallas) for him to fall in our laps.

Why does it have to be LA? Like if Utah pulled this off I'd probably immediately become a Jazz fan. My USMNT one time switch LOL. But switching to the Lakers seems so gross.

Listening to Simmons and Goldsberry on the Fox trade. I said earlier it's a no brainer for the Spurs and it is, but the media seems to be under the impression that Fox is a distributor and loves throwing lobs. Monk is the lob guy on the Kings - Fox is a tunnel vision scorer. Fox is excellent at it, but I think they are overplaying synergy with Wemby.

I found it odd that Goldsberry asked if there was anyone better to be throwing Wemby lobs in SAN.

for me—the only other alternative may have been Gianniis—but I don’t know if Milwaukee has any current ancillary piece as good as Max Christie (who I think is a nice solid young player).
Dallas isn't getting any ancillary pieces in this scenario.
Max Christie—who is a promising young player. Being in Southern California and being able to watch the Clippers and the Lakers regularly—I’ve seen enough from him to see that he has nice potential on both sides of the court. He can shoot 3’s, he can attack the rim, and he’s energetic on the defensive end.

Looking at the the standings this morning...
  • The longest winning streak in the Western Conference belongs to your Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers are 4 games up (with two teams between) on the 5th worst record. They are going to be just competent enough to keep them from getting a difference maker in the draft.
  • Dallas is 1 game up (two wins) on #11 Golden State and only 3 games up on #12 SAS.
  • The Lakers are 9 games over .500 with a negative point differential.
  • I think the top 8 in the East standings are all but set (CLE, BOS, NYK, IND, MIL, MIA, DET, ORL). The Hawks, Bulls, and Sixers are vying for the last two spots. The Sixers are 100% going for the play in while the Bulls just traded their best player and the Hawks lost their 1A/B player for the season. Both of them could be under .400 and making it into the post season.
  • Seems like the Cavs/Celtics/Knicks are nearly locked into the 1/2/3 seeds.
  • It's possible that the ultimately 7/8 seeds in the east are the worst 7/8 seeds we've ever had while the 7/8 seeds in the west are legitimate threats, depending on how the whole trade deadline shakes out.

Pelicans absolutely have to be making moves this week.

Zero reason for them to keep McCollum/Ingram (if no intention to resign). May as well see if there's anything out there there for 🐷too. And Murray just tore his Achilles.
McCollum is a distressed asset. He makes too much money for a player his age and production. I don't think they would have a hard time getting rid of him, necessarily, but I don't think they are catching any assets. If I were them I would hold on to Ingram and negotiate hard this offseason. They aren't getting anything of value for him either but they might be able to resign him on a good deal where he is part of their success in the future or a trade asset. I would hold them both and deal with it in 5 months.

The Pelicans are the team that should have stealthily sold their franchise player to some market in need of a future star.

With the Murray injury, hopefully New Orleans finally does an organization shake up. There is so much talent on that roster, but they need to purge Zion (among others) and start over.

I think you have to go Eastern Conference with it. You can be a fan of Charlotte and never worry about the two teams meeting in the finals. You really are free to pick and choose who to root for/against in the playoffs completely devoid of homerism.

As a plus, you get to cheer for Grant Williams again. I know how happy that would make you.

Kevin Durant is correct about loyalty
He is? Loyalty doesn’t even exist in college sports anymore, let alone in the NBA with literal billions of dollars being thrown around. That’s been the case with NBA players since at least “The Decision”. I like KD, but he knows as well as anyone that it’s just business, on both sides, and has been for yearabout loyalty.
He is. Since many won't hear what is being said because it's Durant saying it (fair) I'll point to Giannis. He was asked about the Luka trade and had some thoughts:

"I thought it was fake news. It's insane. Obviously, I've played against Luka a lot of times and AD and all the people that were included in the trade. This is the world we're living in. It's a business, you have to understand nobody's safe, nobody's safe. If a five-time All-NBA first-team, a 25-year-old, a guy that just made it to the Finals seven months ago, a guy that led the league in scoring, a guy that finished second or third in MVP voting, a guy that scored 70-something points one time, a guy that had a 60-point triple-double, a guy that knows how to play the game of basketball, I can keep going and going, an All-Star, not just an All-Star, an All-Star starter, a guy that averaged 34/9/10, but I'm not here to talk about Luka and how good he is, I think everybody in the world knows he's one of the best players in the league

At the end of the day, l've said this in the past, you get evaluated every single day. You don't take nothing for granted. Being an All-Star, you don't take it for granted, Being able to go out there and put the jersey on and represent your team, you don't take that for granted. Being out there and representing your family, you don't take that for granted. Every second that you play in an NBA game, I love it, I try to play with joy. And at the same time, I understand the business of basketball, that sometimes teams need to make the best moves that are good for their organization and for their position and for their own pursuit of greatness and championships. But at the same time, it goes both ways. You cannot have a double standard here. When the teams make the best moves for them and they believe they can get another player to win now. when a player believes that he can go to a different team and he believes he can have a chance to win a championship, we cannot crucify the person and say that he's not loyal and he didn't do the right thing and he let everybody down. Because history has shown you, you have to do what is best for you and your family. You have to do what's best/most important to win."

That's Giannis in a nutshell. He and Durant are really saying the same things about loyalty. Seems like more fans are getting wise to this in regards to the teams needing to be more accountable on that front. See the Mavs & Luka w/current ownership vs the Mavs & Dirk w/Cuban.

The problem is that in February of 2025, they don't have anything of value that they should want to trade. Missi, Hawkins, and Murphy should be off the table as they are young and should be part of the next good Pels team (if it ever happens). Herb Jones would be in demand but he's hurt. Zion, Ingram, and CJ have little value. Murray went from distressed asset to untradable. Brandon Boston Jr, Jose Alvarado, and Javonte Green are probably available but will only get mediocre 2nds. I think they should hold course and figure things out between this offseason and next trade deadline.

I think if the Pels could have traded Ingram they would have done so already.
I think there would be takers if they wanted some expirings and 2nd rounders or to take on some bad contract to get one or two firsts. The problem is they can't take on bad money because they are taxed out next season because of the CJ extension a while back and they don't want to trade Ingram for nothing.

Jimmy Butler saying he won’t sign an extension with the Warriors. So those talks are dead.

Why would any team extend Butler? Butler is signed through next season. First year of new deal he would be 37. Butler was unhappy in Chicago an was sent to Minny, Butler was unhappy in Minny and got traded to Philly, Butler was unhappy in Philly and got traded to Miami, now Butler is unhappy in Miami.

Sound like this is a Jimmy problem.

Yeah I'll judge you personally and harshly if you jump ship to become a Lakers fan.

A couple things. Butler has a player option for next year, so he could easily be a rental and despite his track record nothing bad happened in Philly. Butler left as a free agent, but because of thr cap Miami had to do a sign and trade with Philly for him to go there.
