2024-25 NBA Thread: ESPN ready to debate if Warriors blowing 3-1 lead to meager Rockets diminishes LeBron’s legacy (40 Viewers)

I can’t believe that trade is real. Holy ****.
I saw it on Facebook this morning and thought it was one of those dumb clickbait posts.

I've stopped watching the NBA since the Bulls stopped trying, but trades like are the constant reminder the game will never be like it was in the 90s again.
Shaq left the Magic for the Lakers literally in 1996
Shaq and Barkley changing teams were the biggest moves of the decade.

The amount of superstars who stay with 1 team during their prime is the exception these days.
The Mavs traded Luka. He didn’t choose to leave.

Also...ONE PICK IS ALL? ARE YOU ****ING NUTS? It's probably a garbage pick too because THEY HAVE LUKA NOW
Can’t believe they didn’t shop around. Obviously they didn’t want Luka to know they were wanting to trade him.
I know Presti likes to hoard assets like Smaug, but I think he would have given up the farm for Luka. Could have sent several times the value the Lakers did.

I thought when I woke up that this was literally a bad dream brought on like only the sleep deprivation of a 4-week old can bring.

Nope.

Maybe Nico has a daughter that Pelinka kidnapped? I can't think of many things that would suddenly make me this dumb but thats probably on the list.
Unfortunately this happens to Kings fans about every 18 months.

With this trade and the constant suspension of Jimmy Butler, maybe the teams are putting players on notice a bit. Though trading Luka to Milwaukee would have been a stronger message than LA. Lol

I'm 37. Been a Lakers fan since I was a little boy. It's been hard to stay engaged during the regular season because it feels like the 2nd round is the ceiling. And even that feels optomistic.
Also, there's not really been a great future plan.

This is absolutely absurd. I couldn't let myself believe it until they were talking about it on ESPN.

It's been a really tough run for you, I'm sorry.

Jerry Jones is the happiest guy in Dallas this morning. Totally amazing. And super bowl week..........boys on the ticket will have a bit to talk about tomorrow.

"I believe that defense wins championships," Mavs general manager Nico Harrison told ESPN's Dave McMenamin regarding his motivation to trade Doncic for Davis. "I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We're built to win now and in the future."

😂
AD doesn’t want to play Center though…
Which is fine because Dallas has two very good defensive centers. I think this trade is bonkers, but an AD and Lively/Gafford front court is incredible defensively.

Also - this trade is ****ing incredible. No trade like this, superstar for superstar ever happens!

Does this move make the Lakers the favorites to win it all? LBJ and Luka on the same team. Good Lord!
I think the Mavs are better this year with the deal.
It's not inconceivable. Kyrie-Klay-AD is a pretty nice core, although it would have been better 8 years ago.

They basically have to win this year to avoid this trade being seen as a complete disaster because they surely could have gotten more/younger assets for Luka.

This can’t be the end for Mavs dealing. They’re has to be a long term vision. Right? Right?

Does Kyrie go next? Or do Mavs go opposite direction and trade for Butler?

If you don’t think Luka is going to stay that’s fine. But wouldn’t you want to trade him for someone a tad younger than Anthony Davis?

Yeah, it will be incredible on the defensive end. Might be tough on the offensive end as AD's weak 3pt shooting makes spacing hard.

I wonder if one of Lively/Gafford/PJ gets moved for another wing.

Butler would be really interesting on this team.

Mavs won’t want to move Lively or PJ. Gafford won’t bring much in return. Probably means PJ moves on.

If I can attempt to cope with this deal as a certified Lakers-hater, they won't be a serious threat either this year or next year. The only long term piece they have to build around Luka with is Reaves. The earliest pick they can deal is 2031 - they owe 2025, 2027, and 2029 firsts, and the ones they have won't be amazing unless Luka takes a gap year. If Lebron leaves/retires after next year they'll have cap space, which history shows they'll use to land some other superstar, but that cap space is basically the only asset they'll have to improve the team meaningfully in the foreseeable future. So Pelinka still has his work cut out for him in terms of building a contender.

I don't drink often, but when I do something like penguin shaped oven mitts and it's end up at my house a couple days later. This is like that for the Dallas GM except with NBA players.

A win now and avoid the super-max for a player they perceive as undedicated move I guess.

How much money did the trade cost Luka?
More than a $100 million on a 5 year max extension this summer, but Bobby Marks tweeted he can make most of that up by taking a shorter extension and then signing a new deal later once he's a 10 year vet.

It’s LA. He will make hundred million from marketing crap that uses his NIL.

FWIW

"The most shocking trade in NBA history, conversations with sources across the NBA suggest, was the product of a complicated set of circumstances that largely came down to this: Luka Doncic did not plan on staying with the Dallas Mavericks after his current deal came to an end in 2026, and his team should get what they could for him."

Way to bargain, LOL

A simple explanation I saw developing late last night, and it makes sense. Mavs knew they weren’t going to be able to sign him to a supermax, knew there would be a handful of top teams who would be able to give him that deal, and wanted to get something now rather than nothing next summer.

This makes sense and is one of the few plausible explanations.

But still, with reports being that Luka didn’t make this demand, why not shop around a bit?

After thinking about this and reading/listening to smart people, I can see why the Mavs could have wanted to trade Luka. They couldn't guarantee that they were going to have him two years from now, he's always a little overweight, he seems like a bit of a difficult personality on and off the court for the franchise, he's now developing a bit of an injury concern, and if they did keep him it was going to be a huge contract. I think the idea of trading him at all is bad, I can follow the logic and could see how the Mavs got to the point of wanting to trade him.

That said, they could have gotten the same trade from the Lakers in the off-season, at worst, and if they would have opened up the market for Doncic even if he was saying LA or bust, they could have done substantially better. They somehow managed to make their team worse for 2025 and have less hope for the future. Davis could be swapped this off-season to offset some of their terrible decisions making but they'll never recoup the value that they gave to the Lakers.

There has to be more to it behind the scenes - like Luka made it known he would only sign with LA. Even if so the GM had to get more - Nets were in same situation with KD and got Bridges, Cam J and a boatload of picks......then spun off Bridges for another 5 1sts. I just cant see why they wouldnt have a monster bidding war or just hold him and deal in offseason.

Worst trade I can remember since a few Nets disaster in the past - KG/Pierce most recent but at least they were going for it all - this just makes no sense to me even if they were down on Luka.

Agree that maybe Mavs think no way they re-sign Luka. And maybe make a push to compete just for this season. Jimmy Butler next?

From the Dallas Morning News:

Harrison told The News that he and Pelinka began having “basketball” conversations more than a month ago.

“Then all of a sudden we’re like, ‘Would you ever do this?’

‘Nah, you’re joking, right?’

‘Hmm. Interesting. Maybe I would.’

Added Harrison: “And then it just built over time over the last three weeks.”

This is how bad fantasy trades start out…..in high school leagues
