2024 New York Football Giants (hello darkness my old friend) (1 Viewer)

What are y'all's thoughts on giving up the 4th pick for JJ McCarthy? Saw Dane Bruegler say he'd have McCarthy over Cam Ward and Sanders.
No
Not a first
Maybe a second
Prefer a third
Why would the Vikes do that? It’s not like he’s Josh Rosen.
Why would The Giants offer a first for a player who's never taken a snap in a regular season game and is coming off of a major injury?
Oh wait...it's Joe Schoen
Because any player they draft with that pick will have also never taken a snap in a regular season game? And don't bother with "none of them will be coming off an ACL injury" because I'll counter with "none of them have just gotten a free year of learning from one of the best QB coaching minds in the NFL". JJM is already aeons ahead of Ward and Sanders from a mental preparation perspective as a result of this.

A 21 year old rookie QB coming off a knee injury is not a 30 year old RB blowing out his achilles. This isn't dynasty fantasy football where a guy's values depreciates 50% because he didn't play his first year/got hurt. If you stick JJM in this class, he goes top 3, and probably even before both QBs.

Spineless owner hires clueless GM who brings deer in the headlights coach with him
Another year of Schoen's analytics letting All-Pro caliber players walk because of their "regression" number
Another year of players playing for a coaching staff they have no faith in
Another year of "regression" for the franchise
Instead of starting a rebuild we get another year of the same crap we went through this year
How far back will that set the franchise?
Thanks John,Wellington would be sleepless,apparantley you aren't
I empathize with this as both a Jet and a Ranger fan.

But as I just mentioned in my previous response to you, if I were a Giants fan, I'd be dying to trade for JJM. You can instantly 'rebuild' that franchise IMO with him and Daboll and a lot of this goes away. I think Mara is always going to wonder "what if" about Daboll/Schoen if he doesn't let them draft/acquire their own QB.

But three draft picks?
Yea this team needs a qb but they have needs pretty much everywhere else
That's a lot of draft capital for an unproven player and I'll give you he grades higher than Sanders or Ward. Neither of whom I would draft that early.
If The Vikings let him go and they get three picks for him, kudos to them
If I'm Schoen I bolster the O line with the first pick then look for a qb like Kyle McCord later and keep that draft capital to help in the other areas that need it
But it's Joe Schoen, who's track record is less than stellar

Yea I'm not saying I would give up 3 picks for him, just a data point of what one of the "industry experts" is valuing him at.

But 1.4 for him straight up nets you a guy that many think would go 1.1 if he was in this class right now. I'd much rather him than either of the 2 QBs at this present moment. If I was a Giant fan I'd be rooting like hell for Darnold and the Vikes to go on a run and make the chances of JJ shaking lose slightly more possible. As a Jet fan I certainly am.

He was the 10th pick in the 2025 draft.
If he was entering that draft coming off a torn ACL he probably would have dropped to at least the middle, maybe end of the first rd and you lose a year of 5 year 1st rd rookie pay
Under those circumstances ... How has his value has gone up ????
I'd give up 2 x 2nd round picks for him and no more

Well they got what looks to be a generational WR instead. If they could flip a 2025 1st for JJ after the fact, I'd say that would end up being a pretty good haul!

No he wasn't. Hard Knocks clearly showed they were trying to trade up for Daniels. Nabers is a cart befor the horse pick. You have a cart now, no horses to pull it. Good job. By the time you get the horse, the cart will be too expensive to own.

His relative 'value' has gone up from last year because the QB class sucks this year. You've got (as of now) 2 QBs that if they were drafted in 2024 draft, probably would have went behind every single first round QB from last year's class. Pretty obvious example of supply and demand with this year. If he's better than guys that are going to get reached for this year for lack of other options, then it doesn't matter where he happened to be drafted last year.

I don't really understand your point about if he was coming off a torn acl entering that draft. It's apples to oranges. He wasn't. He tore his ACL his rookie year and that year is now gone. He's rehabbed. Whoever would acquire him in this hypothetical scenario isn't burning a year on him in their system on an injury that's already been rehabbed. That you think he's worth 2 2nds is laughable and being confused with dynasty fantasy football.

I can agree with this for sure. It's usually backwards to grab the skill guys first. That's part of my argument for an NYG trade of McCarthy to try to marry those 2 (or Nabers with a good young QB) as quick as possible to try to maximize on those rookie contract years.

Maybe you have a different definition of generational. He's not top 5 in NFL WRs, not sure he's even in the top 10.

If only JJ McCarthy was still available when the Giants picked at 6 last year.
Well they got what looks to be a generational WR instead. If they could flip a 2025 1st for JJ after the fact, I'd say that would end up being a pretty good haul!

Nabers isn't generational.
Whatever dude. Pretty clearly difference making WR1 that is a rare obvious hit for a team that usually misses at the top of the draft.

Maybe you have a different definition of generational. He's not top 5 in NFL WRs, not sure he's even in the top 10.
You're getting way too hung up on semantics. I literally redefined it the post you replied to while simultaneously ignoring. He's also a rookie. He doesn't need to be "top 5 in NFL WRs" 10 months into his pro career for the pick to be pretty clearly deemed a success regardless of other positional needs on the team.

How far back will that set the franchise?

I empathize with this as both a Jet and a Ranger fan.

And as I just mentioned in my previous response to you, if I were a Giants fan, I'd be dying to trade for JJM. You can instantly 'rebuild' that franchise IMO with him and Daboll and a lot of this goes away. I think Mara is always going to wonder "what if" about Daboll/Schoen if he doesn't let them draft/acquire their own QB.

It's the same *** backwards line of drafting they did when they took Saquon Barkley. By the time you get a decent team around the guy, he's either washed or he's making too much money to retain him. Nabers is a good player, but he wasn't even the top rookie WR this season. When people call him generational, I have to roll my eyes, he's not even close to that.

Yea I mean I probably over spoke saying generational in the first post I made about it, but he's got as high of a ceiling as almost anyone in the league right now. I also walked that back in my next comment but this guy keeps harping on the same word instead of comprehending the context of my posts.

My comments were never to justify the Giants taking a WR where they did last year, but as I already stated - you could certainly have done much much worse at the top of the draft, especially if you're NYG who have struggled picking there of late.

It really comes down to, if you pass on a qb in round 1, what is your plan? You can’t just hope someone you like is there in round 2. There are a ton of teams who want a rookie qb, including the Vikings who are stock piling picks to make a move up to go get one of these guys. So you are basically saying you are ok with passing on a rookie QB this year and figuring it out next year.

Except at that point you won’t have Jones on the roster, and Lock is only signed for a year so he is probably gone to. So you are now drafting a QB and looking to sign one to mentor him. Which you already have in place right now.

And who knows if you like anyone next year. This is a historically deep QB class. Next year may be 2013 all over again…want to roll your luck with Geno Smith or Matt Barkley? Oh, and they may not have the draft capital to make a move to get someone next year. Or they may suck so bad with Jones and Lock that DaBoll is fired and not there to even make the pick.

All that said, if you are in position to take a guy you like go do it. Who cares if he is the first or fourth QB taken? The fourth this year may still be better than the 1st QB next year.
This was my position before the draft last year and it's exactly where we wound up. If some chucklehead on a fantasy football message board could see this disaster coming a year away, how the hell can ownership look at our current leadership and say "yeah, I'm good with this". These guys have no vision, no foresight beyond what is right in front of them.

I know it's late in the season but, I just want to express my appreciation for the fact that the Giants front office ultimately decided to let Saquon Barkley test the free-agent market. Thank-you

With those QBs, that makes selecting a WR even more head-scratching.

If they want to solve their QB conundrum, all they have to do is send a fourth-round pick to Atlanta for Kirk Cousins. That's right. How come no one has talked about Cousins as a potential starting QB for next season? Yeah, I know he's had his problems, and he's on the other side of 30, but the Giants do have the cap space to take on his contract. Why not Kirk Cousins?

Cousins’ contract is too much for a bridge guy IMO. Plus giving up extra assets to acquire a bridge QB doesn’t make a ton of sense.
Also, Cousins has a no-trade clause in his contract.

No
The Giants are not a quarterback away from being a contender
Don't waste the money or year on Cousins
He seems like a nice fellow
But I don't want him

Agree. It is hard to be a middling franchise and rebuild. The last thing you want is to win a few more games with a guy and still be out of contention. Rebuild as best you can without forcing a few more wins that ultimately get you nowhere.

Is it too late to fire everyone who didn't want to pay Saquon Barkley the extra million and a half it would have taken to keep him a Giant instead of... y'know allowing him to sign with the Iggles and potentially carry them to a Superbowl?

Or at least fire the incompetents who thought it was a good idea to pay Daniel Jones 40 million and set the franchise back half a decade. What? It's too late they brought the GM back already?

*sigh*
