2024 Year-End Song Draft - 280 songs of the year (1 Viewer)

Pretty sure they invented a new genre... Couch surf rock. From one of my favorite albums this year... Including, I guess, the counter point to this song.

3. DOG HOUSE- FIDLAR

I think somebody took this is in the midyear draft.. counterpoint to mine.

Do we ever do year end album drafts or rankings?

NV used to tabulate this before that account was permabanned. I think it had reached the point of diminishing returns because of small sample sizes there were so few participants in the end.

As we enter the 25th year of the century, this seems like a good year for a 21st century album draft (sung like 21st century schizoid man).
Sad to hear about that permaban. Hope an alias is around to participate—-I thought he had one at some point.

And I’m all in for a 21st century album draft.

And for this ‘24 song draft—likely not for 20 rounds though.
NV will return March 1 I've heard.

My absolute favourites of the year have mostly been represented in the mid-year or early here but I think this is one of the best music years in years, I think I can go pretty deep with "new to most" stuff this year, particularly since I've barely participated in the forums recently.

Re: the year end album polls, the last couple years we tried, there were only 14/15 lists submitted, if someone gave an album 30 points, it was making the top 20 and there was no real consensus.

If we could get 20+ people to commit to sending in lists, I would do it again but it takes a lot of time to do it well and I'd want to have that level of participation to make it worthwhile.

In if we do it.

I am an album guy, and this has been a tough year for me as I feel it was the year of the single. I have 31 albums on my AotY list, and for the 1st time in years none of them really jumped out and grabbed me. Albums 2 though, like, 20 on my list are all pretty much on the same level.

That said, my annual jList of singles is among the strongest I have had in years, and so many of my favorite songs have been picked in this draft already... including at least 5 that are right up there as song of the year contenders for me.

P.S. I will post my list regardless, but if there is an album poll maybe skip the points assignment, and just have assign the points in descending order based on rank? (i.e. top album with 30 points, and 30th album worth 1 point) I know that was always an option in the past, but maybe force it this year to makes things easier?

ETA: I knew that Hi-Vis album would be in your wheelhouse ;)

1.am Peter Perrett - Disinfectant
Thanks so much for adding this. Not for this song (although it's good), but more as a prompt for me to do a little digging on Peter Perrett (side note: I hope that his last name is pronounced parrot).

All these years and I never knew that "Another Girl, Another Planet" by the Mighty Lemon Drops on Vol. V of the Just Say Yes series (Sire records) was a cover!
It's actually from Peter Perrett's band The Only Ones (1978). Here's the original.

The original came in at #10 in my MAD UK 31 countdown

No songs taken from an album and band I just discovered and have been playing over and over lately. I'm sure it's already in most of your wheelhouses though.

4. Fatboy Slim, Dan Diamond, Luca Guerrieri - Role Model

I'm a pervert and a peepin' Tom
Through a hole I watch your mom

Don't need to know where you are
You'll be hit by a wave of me

I'm the God of everything else
You're the God of losing me

It was a sick, sick, sickness loving you
I wake up choking on dreams of you

I wake up crying through loving you
I'll go everywhere just to get away from you

Didn't get the notification, but came back here specifically to look for this thread. Good to see the tradition continuing.
I missed out on the mid-year draft, but still made a playlist based on the results and, as always, enjoyed it tremendously. I'll do my best to avoid sniping picks made during that draft, but there are some songs I enjoyed so much I will grab them later just to insure their part of this playlist.

As I've mentioned in the other threads, I'm a Youtube Music subscriber so I'm maintaining my own playlist which is accessible via Youtube here - https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5NnrcY519DgDQ0kMhWCwi4ZlECO74PgR&si=tbVPl-W7yllzp-f5.

I felt it was a pretty good year for music from established bands.

SCS 1: Pearl Jam - Waiting for Stevie (A little surprised nothing from their new album was selected in the mid-year).
SCS 2: Dead Poet Society - Running In Circles
SCS 3: The Black Crows - Bedside Manners
SCS 4: Lenny Kravitz - It’s Just Another Fine Day (In This Universe of Love)

Had a tough time pulling from this album. Could have gone with 8 of the 10 tracks. Probably my most listened to album of 2024. Big shoegaze vibe throughout and you may recall that works for me.

Hah, even after typing that I changed my mind again. Ummm... cuz it's the longest track...

Sorry to be so late but power had been out last 18 hours where I am in L.A. with high winds and wildfires.

3. Chappell Roan - Good Luck, Babe! (Live 2024 MTV VMAs)

From a production viewpoint, this video is a performance masterpiece.
