2025 Detroit Lions: 2-1 Lions beat Ravens (48 Viewers)

Tom Brady might be fined along with Brien Branch. Agreeing the penalty but not the ejection does not seem that critical.

As a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, Tom Brady is explicitly banned from criticizing officials – just like players, coaches and other owners.

However, that did not stop him from criticizing the officiating in Sunday’s game between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.

During the game, Lions safety Brian Branch received a penalty for a hit to the head and neck area of Packers wide receiver Bo Melton. After a review by league officials in New York, the referees then ejected Branch for the hit.

While Brady seemed to agree with the penalty, he criticized the decision to eject Branch for the hit.

“I don’t love that call at all,” Brady stated during the broadcast in a clip shared by Awful Announcing. “I mean, obviously, it’s a penalty, but, to me, that has to be serious intent in a game like this.”

While this may seem like harmless commentary for most broadcasters, Brady’s criticism of the officials is a clear breach of the restrictions imposed on him as a team owner, and it could land him in trouble with the NFL.

Jack Campbell this season:

Through Week 9, his 80.1 overall PFF grade ranks
- 9th amongst LBs
- 5th amongst starting LBs (50+% of snaps)

Run defense: 79.0 (9th)
Coverage grade 75.4 (4th)

This is just nuts. Fining Brady for making a comment that is the type a color guy should be giving is ridiculous.
NFL should not have made an exception for Brady either you are in or you are out. Brady can’t have it both ways either.

When is the last time someone was ejected for an illegal hit?
I thought the same of the “punch” Nacua threw yesterday. NEITHER play was ejection-worthy imo.

Ps. As a raiders fan who’s offensive coaching staff was just let go, resetting YET AGAIN, I could not be more All In for a Lions Super Bowl run as my “2nd team”. Love everything this team does these past few years. A model for franchises to follow.

Oh, and I don’t post in this thread much but when reading it, I’m beginning to feel like this @BobbyLayne dude might be a Lions’ fan.

Believe it or not, there was talk yesterday that had Cincinnati lost to the Raiders that the move was to go get Trey Hendrickson. But, it looks like he's staying with the Bengals and Za'Darius is on his way to Motown.

Allen Park — With the clock ticking under 24 hours until the NFL’s trade deadline, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell remained non-committal about whether his team would be able to execute a deal, despite reports to the contrary.

“Yeah, I think it’s hard to say,” Campbell said. “I don’t think it’s entirely up to us. I can tell you that we’re trying, (general manager) Brad (Holmes) is trying, and we’ve looked at everything. We really have made a ton of calls and he’s been rolling on it. So, we’ll see. We still have a little bit of time here. We have until tomorrow evening, so we’ll see what happens.”

As he has multiple times in recent weeks, Campbell expressed confidence in his team’s ability to have success with or without a trade.

“I mean, look, if it’s not (happening), we’re rolling,” Campbell said. “We got our guys and we’re going, and that’s the bottom line. And if something doesn’t get done, we’ll start poaching some of these other practice squads, see if we can find some guys that we really liked when they were coming out (in the draft) that have some ability, see if they can grow, and then we’ll continue to give our guys here on this roster a shot.”

Great deal for Detroit! We even have him for next season. I think Brad pulls off one more move, probably another Edge or a SAM if he can find one.

Za'Darius Smith will help, he's a veteran who will be a positive contributor in the locker room. He's been a productive pass rusher - 65 sacks - for a decade across four teams (BAL, GB, MIN, CLE.)

In recent years, he has played opposite Edge Rushers like DPotY Myles Garrett and 4x Pro Bowler Danielle Hunter. You have to go back to 2019 & 2020 to find seasons where he was the primary guy getting chipped and double teamed.

Great move by Brad in terms of acquiring an impactful player at a reasonable cost. Smith is a seasoned pro, widely praised by former teammates for his work ethic. He should fit right into the culture Dan Campbell has created and maintained.

Good addition for very little cost. Would not be surprised to see Lions add another player as well.

Plus guy like Smith will be energized going to a contender.

He has turned it up in the postseason. Been to the playoffs 6 straight years (each of the 4 teams he was part of), has 4 sacks in 8 games, plus 18 TFL. Reporters were openingly asking him 3 weeks ago about the prospect of playing for Dan Campbell. Unquestionably the guy wanted to see this trade happen.

Glad he's a Lion. I'm sure they are not done, whether it's through another trade or scouring practice squads.

Would like Dalton or Rudolph for a late rounder as insurance
Wouldn't bother me but there isn't a backup QB available that would win you a Superbowl. If something bad happens to any contender's starting QB it's probably over.
Very valid point. My thought is more focused during the season if Goff were to miss 2-3 games and we are contending for home field. I agree, if we do not have Goff for playoffs we are probably out of contention.

I'm not happy they have put themselves into this position. Teams are well aware they need an EDGE rusher.
Waiting to the last minute doesn't seem wise if you ask me.

Not much choice. Teams like Cleveland have to decide if they are really going to give up on this season. If the pounding by the Chargers continues, the Browns should be ready to trade Za'Darius Smith, hopefully to the Lions. Brad has been in contact with every team in the league mapping out potential deals.

It sounds like a deal for Smith is close to being final. His current contract:

Za'Darius Smith signed a 2 year , $23,000,000 contract with the Cleveland Browns, including $10,790,000 signing bonus, $12,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $11,500,000. In 2024, Smith will earn a base salary of $1,210,000 and a signing bonus of $10,790,000, while carrying a cap hit of $5,235,000 and a dead cap value of $19,468,000.

So Cleveland has paid $11.3 million of the salary. Lions only has to pay $605k of salary because most of 2024 was signing bonus. The Lions will pay him approximately $11 million next season, which does not sound like it is guarenteed.

Line is holding around -3.5, somewhat higher than the advance line last week. Total is 49.

Advance line for the Jags game is -10/51.

Kyle Meinke, Lions beat writer for MLive since 2013, is moving to Berlin, Germany.

Gonna miss him, he’s one of my top 5 for Lions content. Guess he’s been wanting to move to Germany for many years, and sounds like this is a great career opportunity for him. Good guy.

Za’Darius was traded during the Browns bye week, so Dan Campbell gave him the next few days off to take care of some things. He’ll practice Friday & walk through Saturday morning, they’re expecting to have a package of plays they can use him on Sunday night.

Paschal will be back this week, Rodrigo is TBD. Started the IR-R clock today for both Ifeatu Melifonwu & Emmanuel Moseley.

Texans have not yet decided if Nico is ready to go yet. Kind of a big deal since in the 5 games he played he averaged 113 yards per game with a total of 3 TDs. Houston was 4-1 in those games, 2-2 since.

I know the Lions are everyone's darlings and we're not supposed to say anything negative.

Maybe this is fake so disregard if so.

But if true, I do not like this one bit,. https://x.com/E_Woodyard/status/1854927524586836396

Pinkie ring with game ball from Jared's.

You don't mess around with rings in the NFL.
Looks like it’s legit. Why is this worse than selling Subway sandwiches, shampoos with Tiny Troy, or a signed game used jersey? I must be missing something?

Rings are sacred in NFL Football.

Nico may or may not play for Texans and Will Anderson is out, which might help overcome Decker not playing. Hopefully Smith can be active as at least part of an edge rotation.
I will be totally shocked if Smith doesn't play.
Yeah he's had a couple days off now to get situated.

I think Nico will also play. Houston has to deactivate someone to make room and why do that this week unless they are planning to use him this week.

Lions announce roster moves:
  • Waived DL Isaiah Thomas
  • Placed LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin on Reserve/Injured.
  • Signed TE Shane Zylstra, LB Abraham Beauplan and DL Al-Quadin Muhammad to the Active Roster from the Practice Squad.
  • Elevated LB Ezekiel Turner and OL Jamarco Jones from the Practice Squad to the Active/Inactive list.
