Alright let's break down this official rooster of mine - eligible for the just missed Joe B's deadline by 4 hours b/c I screwed up badge*
*-not an actual badge
Anyway here goes:
QB: 2 for $36
QB - Joe Burrow - CIN/10 - $26 - 791 have him
QB - Tua Tagovailoa - MIA/12 - $10 - 906 have him (72 have both of them)
With his first truly normal training camp, all of his weapons back (with a couple more in fact like Noah Fant) and a sinking sensation that the defense that struggled last year might not improve all that much in the coming year it's more than merely homerism that had me all in on Joey B as my QB 1 for the contest. Like the football equivalent of the 1980s Denver Nuggets. At $26 it basically forced the 2-QB alignment and pretty much automatically put me in the $10 bin - since every option below that is massively shaky. I don't trust Rodgers, I don't like Rodgers. Stafford's medically drama was too scary - even scarier than Tua's medical history - it really was down to him or Darnold and the change of scenery scared me off Darnold. Did give half a thought to Bryce Young but just couldn't pull the trigger on 2 extra dollars.
RB: 5 for $82
RB - Derrick Henry - BAL/7 - $31 - 932 have him
RB - Chase Brown - CIN/10 - $26 - 4032
RB - Jordan Mason - MIN/6 - $11 - 2554
RB - Nick Chubb - HOU/6 - $8 - 2563
RB - Jacory Croskey-Merritt - WAS/12 - $6 - 5854 (which surprised me as being low) There are 4 roosters with all 4 of these players
Jacory was an automatic pick. I wanted to go top 2 heavy and then try for cheaper options that had realistic paths to regular points. Mixon's medical drama had me looking at the two Houston RBs and it just seems Chubb is a more boring but likely contributor - and even if Mixon comes back it's plausible that Chubb serves in the goal-line vulture capacity. The reports of Mason getting a1b kind of share (and the contract to go with it) had me snag him at a reasonable price. I bounced around a lot with the top 2 - sometimes I had Bijan but at the end of the day Henry really is too perfect for Baltimore and he will have his big games and close out games even with Lamar alongside. Chase Brown was in and out (and I'm a double homer here as he's an Illini Bengal) but I was reluctant to rooster both Tee Higgins and him. I think Brown's got a big hold on the backfield and I'm surer on him than the other RBs in the 20s. That and just the worry about Tee getting an untimely injury and the fact that I like to do WR with a many darts approach and that was what led me to go in the direction of Brown.
WR: 9 for $69
WR - Tetairoa McMillan - CAR/14 - $17 - 1497 roosters
WR - DJ Moore - CHI/5 - $16 - 494
WR - Emeka Egbuka - TB/9 - $10 - 5604
WR - DeMario Douglas - NE/14 - $7 - 1009
WR - Joshua Palmer - BUF/7 - $7 - 603 (my rooster is the only one with these first 5 WR)
WR - Keenan Allen - LAC/12 - $5 - 2457
WR - Troy Franklin - DEN/12 - $3 - 964
WR - Elic Ayomanor - TEN/10 - $2 -1203
WR - KaVontae Turpin - DAL/10 - $2 - 401 (7 roosters have these last 4 guys)
This is pretty typical for me - there's too many times that random receivers get those big games (relative to the RB position) that it just is the place to go for volume IMO. McMillan basically has been here the whole time - big opportunity to score well beyond his cost. Sometimes he was my #1 (and is) and sometimes he was my #2. I decided that there were enough values down below that I could have him as my top salary here. For the 2nd spot things sorta evolved - first I was looking at Shakir as Beefalo is a nice team to have a piece of, then I got to thinking that Hunter might be flashy in his first year with Jacksonville - but what's that play balance going to be is what got me off of him at the end and switching to DJ Moore - a surer shot it seems. Then of cousre Egbuka was always there. I considered both main WRs in New England and went with the cheaper Douglas. I considered a number of possibilities with the Bills and Palmer might be the most likely guy to never get used by my team but at the price it's the cheapest reasonable dart for that team. Keenan Allen - I mean that was a given the moment they signed him and my goodness that looks like it will pay handsomely. I had nearly every Denver receiver in my combos it seemed and Franklin ended up being the cheap upside guy (though I'd love to see Illini guy Pat Bryant ball out tbh). I locked into Turpin when I started to really look and it was nice to see him in the game plan for the Cowboys Thursday night so it seems like it will pay off at some point. Ayomanor is a case of getting a starting WR for $2 - too good not to have him. I had Doubs for a while but I really felt like that was going to be dead money and I ended up changing like 5 things just to get him off my team. (I didn't like the other $6 guys....and so I look to what I can do in other positions...and then one thing leads to another...you all know).
TE: 3 for $44
TE - Sam LaPorta - DET/8 - $23 - 253 roosters - LaPorta is my least-owned player.
TE - Tyler Warren - IND/11 - $14 - 3405
TE - Mason Taylor - NYJ/9 - $7 - 1398 (LaPorta's presence made it work out that my team is the only one with all 3 of these tight ends though I am still a little surprised by that).
If I have a small regret it is not sneaking in another cheap tight end - I forgot how well having 4 options worked for me last season. And I pretty much had these 3 choices the bulk of the time - though LaPorta was the one that I definitely considered getting off of. Kittle's week 14 bye (to go with McMillan above) was more than I wanted to risk. LaPorta's week 8 bye is very convenient for my team construction and while the top two options also have that convenient bye I just couldn't spend that level at the top of this position. Warren has a big opportunity with Indy. Taylor had a lot of write ups about how valuable he could be with the Jets and when you considered how underwhelming their WR options are after Wilson it seems like he was a good 3rd wheel to snag.
PK: 3 for $10
PK - Chris Boswell - PIT/5 - $4 - 1915 own him
PK - Blake Grupe - NO/11 - $3 - 724
PK - Cairo Santos - CHI/5 - $3 - 1568 (17 people have these 3) Oh crud I dropped the wrong kicker - this was supposed to be Graham Gano

now I have 2 kickers on Week 5 bye
I usually like to go 3 guys for $9 if possible but a couple of those options have already lost their job and another couple are shaky so it got me looking to splurge and up my total spend to $10. Chad Ryland had that 97-yard field goal and it had me sold for most of my process. But in the back of my mind Boswell has been good for a good while in PIttsburgh and that feels like a team that is going to be in a lot of 19-16 rock fights so the switch was made. I swapped in Grupe late figuring that surely if that Saints points they will be mostly field goals and also figured it would mix things up a bit....and I stupidly dropped the wrong kicker in the process (Keeping Santos when I really intended to keep Gano - well gonna dump another permutation into my tracking of my versions and zany entries). I Also would have had a more unique lineup. Oh well - it's not like Gano is always a sure thing as he has had a tendency to get injured. And at least I screwed up with an early enough bye...
TD: 3 for $9
TD - New Orleans Saints - NO/11 - $3 - 341 roosters
TD - Atlanta Falcons - ATL/5 - $3 - 850 roosters
TD - Miami Dolphins - MIA/12 - $3 - 487 roosters (26 have all 3 - clearly there are other bargin bin fans like me).
I am a stubborn 3-defense advocate. They are so random I just want that 3rd bullet. I also shop almost exclusively at the $3 store - though I did peek at the $4 Bengals but wasn't sentimental enough to do it. Dolphins seemed the best of the sorry bunch. I figured that the 2 NFC South defenses will benefit by playing...in the NFC South.
So there you have it. 25-man team for the win
