Also...we overpaid Xavien Howard. He is clearly in decline and not worth anywhere near what we are now stuck paying him. Between him completely losing it and Byron Jones deciding he no longer wants to be a football player, our secondary went from potentially the best in the NFL to well below average.

Oh well, I guess the "there's always next year" mantra just came a little early this season. F.

Wait until they overpay Tua starting as early as April when they can technically start extending him
They can opt to pick up his 5th year Option(Done at the end of Year 3) but typically if a team is actually going to use that as their salary, they clearly would be saying we don't believe in you and McDaniel has repeatedly said they believe in Tua so my gut says like it or not Tua is going to get A LOT of GUARANTEED MONEY in the off season or by the start of summer
Your mood is not going to change.

One of the things that makes all this harder to digest is that Miami will not look a lot different this time next season. They don't have the resources and draft picks to go out and improve the team beyond what it is right now. Christian WIikins has to be extended and then you Tua looming and it's not going to be fun talk.

I don't think they extend Tua unless he stays healthy the remaining 4 games and balls in 3 or 4 of them. In this division, there are always 3 games @BUF, @NE, @NYJ. Let's see how he does this Saturday night in the cold and snow at Orchard Park and in 3 weeks at Gillette Stadium before we give Tua guaranteed $$$.

Id Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier are going to han their hat on Tua......then so be it. I think it’s a mistake long term. Always have and always will think that. Don’t get me wrong. Tua is a solid Pro. He is just not the kind of guy who IMO that will do enough to win a Super Bowl one day. I simply don’t see it. Once you lock in on what his strengths are and take it away.....there is not much else there.

He is an on schedule QB in a league where off schedule QB’s are now thriving.

Allen
Herbert
Burrow

Thrive at being able to take off schedule situations and make plays by keeping plays alive with their mobility and pocket presence. Imagine Lamar jackson with these weapons Tua has.....just for a moment imagine that.

Instant Super Bowl contender.

I do whatever I can to bring Lamar here. It’s about trying to get rings. And yes wins and titles are team stats......but if you can orchestrate a deal to get a Lamar jackson in here you do it. You simply have to. Or for that matter.....Justin Herbert. Right a wrong in the 2020 draft.

Yeah I am dreaming.....none of this will ever happen. But imagine those kind of QB’s with these kind of weapons? The fact I can imagine that tells me Tua is not the long term answer. Just like Dallas is finding out with Dak Prescott.

Agree 1000% with this take. I want to see a deep playoff run. I want to see us winning on the West Coast, the North East in December....then and only then will I garner more faith in Tua.

You gotta finish. So far we have seen 10 quarters of simply bad bad QB play from our guy. And I am expecting 4 more quarters of a nightmare in the conditions we are about to embark on in Buffalo. They are frothing at the mouth to hit him.....and hit him often. And his arm is not going to be able to cut through those winds and snow....hell Josh Allens balls had some flutter yesterday in bad weather and he has a freaking cannon.

I am bracing for the worst Saturday night and the haymaker about to be delivered to all of us Dolphin fans who for a sliver of a moment had some belief we were a contender.

Kyler Murray didn't take Arizona on a deep Playoff run and he pressed them for an extension and they caved pretty easily.
Ross adores Tua and he's going to back the truck up for him. It's almost guaranteed
I would be shocked if they do not extend Tua as early as summer when they have to make a decision on exercising the 5th Year Option.
Do I agree with it? Of course I don't, i'm with many of you but I'm just sharing the dynamics of what's the horizon.
This Year is Year 3 of what was a rebuild, actually Year 4 but Tua is in Year 3 and you get a special deal with rookie QBs, salary is manageable and you can load up and spend money at other positions. How bad does it look franchise tagging Gesicki? Couldn't use him, couldn't trade him, $10M tied up there, another $17M to Byron Jones who didn't want to play this year.

I'm still pondering the Phillips Sack/Roughing call from last night, that's gonna take a while for me to move past it.

You are under the illusion that Stephen Ross isn't close by lurking about
We haven't seen him or heard a peep from him since the suspension.
Ross would FedEx Tua the money today if he could in order to make the extension happen.
Tua's agent is going to have a field day with Miami and get everything he wants
 
If Tua’s healthy they will extend him. Last night was lost on the first series. So you can attack one of the worst run D’s known to man and you come out and throw 3 straight passes? I hate when coaches try to outsmart the obvious. Establish the run and play action all night. They just started chucking it. Bad coaching

Agree. But the long TD pass to Hill, and the potential long TD that Hill lost in the lights, may entice coach MM to continue to throw deep. Right now, our defense could use some 15 play 75 yard drives, instead of quick strike TDs. We need to throw 20+ yards passes only about 3 or 4 times a game to keep teams honest. Play action should be Tua's best friend.

Curious does anyone think having to stay on the West Coast and not have their normal practice routines and facilities contributed to them not making big adjustments after the 49ers game or was it just a belief that Shanahan knew what they were doing so well that they thought it would work again this week?

Is it scheme or is it injuries though? Neither Waddle nor Hill (post TD) looked at a 100% last night. Both lost big passes in the lights.

I think scheme. SF LBs got much more depth than teams normally do and LAC did it last night. I chalked those lost passes as unlucky not system related, both are hampered tho that's true.

The good and the bad. Miami has become good enough again that the losses hurt.

I'm not sure what to think of the past two games, other than for all the injuries on Defense, they still are keeping teams from scoring even if they are on the field a lot.

Offensively: well, teams at some point were going to clog the middle of the field, and the spectacular catches are not happenning anymore (unless your name is hill). Miami simply cannot establish a running game. This makes running the offense a much harder slog than anything else. McDaniel has even said "you ave to get defenses out of high safety to be successful offensively"

Tua, Waddle, and a few of the o linemen are in a slump right now. Not sure which one is the biggest culprit in these losses but I'd lkely say 1) The pec injury to Armstead, then 2) waddle, then 3)Tua.

Miami has been good at giving themselves outs on contracts over the past few years. I see Tua getting an extension that likley looks big, but is really a 2 year "prove it" deal where Miami has outs after that. If he hits, they restructure him (like they did with X), If not they look to the 2024 draft for a QB. The good news is that the QB room will have more money to burn as Teddy two gloves is likely gone and Skylar becomes the backup next year (and remember, Waldman loves him so our QB of the future may be on the roster)

Tua has two major issues that I'm not sure can be solved. He cannot throw a checkdown and running may end his career. The other parts of his game are solid, but those are some pretty glaring holes and I'm not sure Mike M can solve that. I'd also add that the Shanny system seems to get QBs killed. The three teams running a shananhan style offense (SF, NYJ, and Miami) have each started 3 QBs this year (and SF may start QB #4 this week).

What blew my mind Sunday night was we had no check downs, no flats, no outs.....it was lunacy. It was everyone run downfield and let’s chuck it into the middle to Hill all night...coverage be damed.

I like Mike....but he did a terrible job coaching on Sunday night and Boyer is a freaking train wreck. And Tua looked like a 3rd stringer to boot. Just awful.

I have a lot of reservations about making Wilkins the highest paid DT/DL in the NFL, he's not Aaron Donald but yes he's been a good 1st Rd pick

How may teams win a Super Bowl with the best and highest paid DT in the NFL? Donald gets sacks, Wilkins does not. he's one of the best run stuffers but who runs the football any more in the NFL, Miami sure doesn't.

Do you all understand my POV on this? It's not Christian is a bad player but Miami can likely fetch quite a haul for him if they trade him on his 5th year Option PRIOR to the '23 season and can use those draft picks to try and re-allocate some assets. We have money locked up in Ogbah, Chubb, maybe those are the wrong guys but they can't pay Wilkins the kind of money he will want.

-Waldman isn't impacting my statement but one of the best things you said is "our QB of the future may be on the roster"
I know exactly what you are saying and that story arc will not surprise me and I think this is why so many Miami fans do not want to see Tua given a fat contract this off season. I want to see him out there in '23 on his 4th year of his rookie deal, 5th year option picked up with the mind set he might need to have that ripped up and given a true extension but I want to see him come out on fire again next season, hopefully even better than he is right now. Tua was stuck in neutral or worse his 1st and 2nd season, we hated him, well some of us turned on him quickly or never really believed in him much until we saw what we saw this season.

-As an aside to the entire Miami fan base that actually does a great job of coming in here and linking good information. I think the Miami Dolphins thread is one of the better more thorough team threads where we discuss and break down a lot of topics. I don't want to get into a tug of war over Tua and choose not to post a bunch of bad things right now, he's earned the right to play out the rest of 2022 before I start needling him when he is down on the ground.

The defense did hold Thor and the Lightning Bolts to just 23 points, that's not bad.

I go back and watch the game, we are 17-14 with over 6:00 left in the 3rd, what happened? We score a FG the rest of the way vs a soft defense, that cannot happen.

Coach MM gets a D, coach Boyer gets an F. Crowder on WQAM was ripping him for that defense at the end of the half where most of the team was IN the end-zone on 3rd and goal from the 17. Ekler gets a screen with blocking and almost scores, then scores on 4th and goal.

If we are being real…..we produced 10 points. That immaculate fumble play was a gift from the heavens.

We stunk up the joint. And there was no injury crutch for our offense. We had all our horses. The Chargers on the other hand have 3 out of 5 legit starters out on their OL and were missing their best defensive player (Derwin James).

The utter abandonment of the running game is mind blowing. That is what sets up all those effective PA and PA rollouts that had produced huge plays for this team. I have not seen it in weeks.

This was a typical Dolphins West Coast meltdown. Been seeing this even in our glory days in the 80’s and 90’s.

My expectations have been tempered. I felt this season 9-10 wins….the way we are playing now….seems about right.
 
Alright MoP where are we at this week with the Miami Dolphins? Where is the mindset having been slightly exposed and now heading up to Buffalo?

Tua still a low end QB #1 this week? Can't see starting Lawrence over him against DAL. BUF D isn't exactly on fire.

Projections out of Tua and the rest of the skill players. I can't believe how a week or two changes things. I dumped both Wilson and Mostert in one league and picked up Gibson and Z Knight, who was still out there. Many felt M Carter would take the priority of the work and that doesn't appear to be the case. Heck, Knight is my second best RB this week I think over Gibson and Swift. Perhaps one of them and add Higgins into the mix will see the Flex start this week.

Edit: Listening to others saying Tua looks locked into the big 2 WR's and defenses have shifted to cover that much better. MIA not running the ball, etc. Tua forcing it down the field with little success now. Does McDaniel shift and have a new wrinkle look?

Tua in cold weather @BUF is not a good bet, over Lawrence at home in great 48 degree weather even vs the good DAL defense. Tua is not that good at manufacturing plays under pressure especially when his initial reads are covered. We'll find out more about Tua (and coach MM) in the next 4 games against some good defenses.

That's exactly what I am afraid of. Looking at Lawrence or gulp, Mike White against the Lions.

I also just dropped DAL D for GB on MNF against Baker, LAR. DAL gets PHI next week so time to move on.

Tua/Lawrence close > M White

I'll be watching practice reports and what not this week for the QB start.
 
Much like the 0-7 team last year than went 7-3 down the stretch, this dolphin team is far from perfect, but let's assess where we are after 13 games with 4 to go.

Offense: well, we have one, and it can score on one play. Problem is It doesn't score on 10 play drives. The running game was not solved in year one of this coaching staff, but the o line is a better unit than it was last year.

Defense: well, the defense has been retooled inside of a season. We went from Press corners and cover zero to a pretty decent front 4 and a decimated secondary. Boyer may not be the right coach for this type of defense.

I do not see "In game" adjustments with this team. I think Tua has good anticipation but bad field vision, especially under Duress.

I think we lose this week and then the crucible will occur. 2-2 Down the stretch gets us in the playoffs. 1-3 will have this team looking like a slightly better version of last year. If we go 4-0 we likely win the AFCE. If we go 0-4 (To finish the season on an 0-6 free fall) then I think it will all get blown up again. I think we lose this week and then win 3 in a row to make the playoffs as the 5 seed

What makes anyone think that they can lose this week and sweep the rest of the schedule?
Fooling yourself and their track record for games that matter in December is about as good as the cold weather and West Coast trips

But out of respect for all of you I want to stay away from doom n gloom.
We've had a good time since the rebuild trying to point things out to each other and I've learned a lot, shared a lot of my Dolphins memories
For a silly chat board, seems like a good pay off

I don't want to even start thinking about a new rebuild, we fought hard to get here, we knew the new coach was not the Defensive Power that Flores was, hard to find a coach that is good at both offense and defense, McDaniel was hired under the plan that he could save Tua and save Grier's hide since he whiffed on so many of these top picks. Add up all his 1st Rd selections like Charles Harris in 2017, That 2020 class is still looking bad, Grier whiffed on Jackson and Igbo, neither can contribute to this team.

If you fire Grier, you ask the new GM to accept McDaniel and the entire team as it's constructed
The Titans fired their GM and I think most feel he's been largely successful but he made 1 bad trade with AJ Brown and perhaps other things but the Titans were in 2019/2020 AFCC which wasn't that long ago we watched Ryan Tannehill former Phins' 1st Rd pick and starting QB take them to the AFCC and actually built an early lead in that game. I would maintain that THill is not the straw that stirs the drink in Tennessee

Bills game should be trouble. No Doubt about that. Still, you would not be "Shocked" if the phins won, just happy and a little surprised.
Green Bay: Sure, they'll have fans but this is not the GB teams of Yore. This is a team we SHOULD beat at home.
@New England: We have been better than the pats since Brady left. We are the more talented team even today.
Jets: Teddy B got knocked out on the first play and Thompson got shoved into his first game right after that. It was 19-17 starting the 4th before the bottom fell out (much like the San Fran Game)

Dolphins are talented and relevant now, but they are not perfect. Bills and Chiefs still the top of the food chain in the AFC. Dolphins definitely in that next tier with an uneven Tua.

Barring a stunning turnaround on defense and a return back to mid-season offensive form, the Super Bowl is not a realistic goal at all. I'd love to win one playoff game. I would call that a successful season. Making the playoffs would be nice even if we don't win a game.

Next year has to be the year. Before Tua either breaks our cap, or forces us to start over at QB.

Yeah the windows are narrow, totally get that.

IDK how many Dolphins fans realize it but your rebuild was the blueprint for Brad Holmes in Detroit. Jettison all the big contracts, accumulate draft picks. We're a few years behind so we haven't drafted the franchise QB yet or gone after big name FAs. But you guys did it the right way, and it's obvious our new regime used Miami as the model.

(I'm discounting the scummy things your owner has done lol....but from a roster construction perspective, y'all are right there with the top franchises in the league.)

I agree, mainly bc our Defense is not up to snuff, nor is our running game. That being said, we are one of maybe 3 teams that can score on 1 play against good defenses bc of our speed, and those weird 1 play scores keep us in a lot of games...
 
Gotta say watching Purdy play, the sting of that SF loss doesn't have the same bite it did... yes it's still a loss and a missed opportunity but kid has some poise and skill

Agreed. Big play ability matters a lot in big games. As long as the defense can keep things close, you’re always just a play away from scoring.

It’s one reason why I’d actually prefer better weather tomorrow night. A snowy slowed down close game can be a problem for a favorite when a guy like Hill is always one missed tackle away from putting up 6. It will be interesting to see how much Buffalo blitzes Tua versus how much they protect deep and allow the underneath a bit more. That has been a recipe for disaster against Hill for the Bills in the past at times.

Press man coverage with jams at the line have been very successful against Miami the last 2 weeks. But Buffalo hasn’t geared their personnel or defense towards being able to do that really at all. So I can’t see them having the same sort of success with it if they try to go to it. Their rookie CB Elam is pretty good at it, but they basically won’t put him on the field now that White is back because they don’t like Elam’s ability to cover in Zone.
 
Fans used to matter more back in the day. And it goes both ways. Better to see a Bills game in Miami in December and a Dolphins game in Buffalo in September.

Dolphins D has transformed in front of our eyes from a cover zero heavy blitz team to a 4 man rush zone team. The injuries to the secondary gave us no choice. Even when we have tried cover zero, teams seem to have an answer these days.
 
I do not think they make the playoffs I could see them being swept the remainder of the season. they're up against it in buffalo tonight, snow expected, then GB, Jets, etc. I don't see it happening. I believe they'll finish below .500
more than a Tua problem, I'm not convinced that Mike McDaniel has a clue. they dont make halftime adjustments, they don't stick with what's working - ran all over the chargers in the first half then just stopped it. they he gets all cocky and smarmy with a wish it were colder t-shirt. don't wear that and go to buffalo and lose 35-10 you dope. dont get smoked up there you had better at least keep it close.

They're still 8-6 if they falter tonight vs a team they did manage to beat early in the season.
They have to beat Green Bay at home on Christmas but most teams have this year.
9-6 with 2 games left, won't be easy trying to ride into New England but they will have the Jets at home and i'm sure the 40-17 loss from last game without Tua will be fresh in their minds.
So you think Miami loses out the whole schedule? You seem bitter
Ask most Miami fans, prety exciting season and we had to go a stretch without our starting QB.
Most media coverage on mcDaniel has been outstanding so far but I understand your concern

Let's not mix contract talks and performances on the field from the past week.
Miami was close to winning the football game, had the ball inside Buffalo territory
And ended up punting from about the 40-45 yd line when the drive stalled right there
Even another 10-15 yds and set up a FG, woulda stretched the lead to 11, woulda been hard on Buffalo to come back
Instead they ate up 6:00 and kicked a chip shot FG as time expired
We let them peck our eyes out, that's why the birds are crying today, we let them do it.
