3rd Official Free For All Chess Tournament- Round 6 Posted (1 Viewer)

And now White has Rd7! and I am in HUGE trouble. I'm not sure there is anyway out of it. Forced to move my queen, and the pawn on f7 is undefended. Pretty sure he has a mating attack here, although I didn't analyze it. I was considering resigning. Luckily for me, he didn't see it. He took my bishop instead, and that gave me all the breathing room I needed to stifle his attack and eventually force a win.
Too caught up in gaining material back to even recognize Rd7. :wall: I really need to force myself to start looking at all possible options before submitting a move. My instinct is to just quickly submit the first thing that I see, and that's not good.

Not sure what white was thinking here. I'm pretty sure he was lost anyhow after Re4. But this made it quicker.
My (probably mistaken) thought process at this point was that I had no way to protect the bishop on F4 anyway, so I may as well sacrifice my other bishop and get a pawn for it. But you're right, at this point I knew I was pretty much screwed regardless.

Enjoyed the game and write-up. Looking forward to round three.

I suck at chess. :kicksrock:

When does round 3 start?
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Idiots-Guide-Chess-Edition/dp/1592573169Seriously. Probably one of the best beginner chess books written.
i haven't read it , but for me Logical Chess Move by Move was the most helpful when I started.
I think this should be the 2nd chess book anyone reads.

GM Nunn's criticisms's about the analysis aside (Chernev was about 2000-2200 strength I think), the real value of that book and his Most Instructive Games Ever Played is the passion he puts into the commentary. He makes reading an annotated game fun. So what if h3 isn't quite as coffeehouse a move as he thought? Getting good at chess is hard work, and I think giving someone an introduction to chess via Chernev is a good way to take some of that edge off and make you want to get better. Chernev does a good job selecting games for instruction and annotating them for beginners to get an understanding of what's going on.

Oh and he had a HUGE mancrush on Capablanca. Pretty sure he had posters of him on his wall.

Just blew a game where I had complete command & had to take a draw.

Move #40 (I am black) should have been Rb7.

Sometimes I hate this game.

I like how he showed that you don't have to rely on tactical brilliance to win at chess ( which is good for me because I don't have any.) if you can grasp the position and avoid blunders, you'll be all right. In the instructive book I recall a game by Salo Flohr which is just beautiful- no complex moves, just Flohr making one simple good move after another and forcing a win.

I'm of the opinion that players of our collective caliber (that is to say, far from master-level) should be playing virtually every game out to checkmate. But that's just me.
I disagree with that. I think you should take less draws, but not play out hopeless positions.

I suppose. It doesn't help the player in the losing position, but I don't think it hurts the player in the winning position to keep sharp on his basic mating patterns.

And to be clear, I said "virtually" every game. If you're playing against a player who clearly knows how to execute a rook-and-king vs king mate and is a handful of moves away, fine, resign, but if you're like a pawn down in a rook+king+pawn vs rook+king endgame, play it out even if it looks lost.

Invite sent to Joe T...

VA703 had sent me an invite and we are currently in a game so I guess that one will not count...
Still waiting on Joe T to accept my invitation
invite not received

Again, username is Joe_T
You could have let me know about the underscore, so I could have corrected the OP. Or maybe you did? I didn't notice it when we played, and I can't keep track of everything, sorry.

For the record joffer and I are well underway. Very complex game, which means I fully expect him to clean my clock.

It seems the rumours of my chess acumen have been greatly exaggerated.

It's all over but the crying for charvik & I, with me doing the crying.

Nicely played charvik.

Ok, that was the reason, I was going based on what was provided in the OP...

So timschochet, am I supposed to be playing Joe_T or VA703???

gg, it turned out very interesting... Not sure how to copy the moves over for a breakdown.
After the game is over you have the option to email the PGN (which is just a text file) to yourself.

Chesstime Abraham? Screw that guy! I want the REAL DEAL.
If a player is rated better than me I try to grab as many pieces as possible and hope for the best. I was on the ropes here but think I've put him in a bit of a pickle at the moment. We shall see

Thanks! I didn't know that... here it is, in case anyone is interested. I am pleased with not making any major mistake, even though DB forced me to change my original opening early.

ETA: Like someone else said above, with the huge disadvantage in ranking, my thought was exchanging as many pieces like-for-like as possible and be defensive. I still feel I lucked out getting in a good position with my pieces, and a slight advantage in strength (extra pawn and bishop).

Psychopav v. Abraham (1-0)

Wide open game and plenty of mistakes to go around, no doubt about it.

I think I was in a strong position until move #17.

Should have traded the knight for black's dark bishop & held that diagonal with my dark bishop.

Also miscalculated pushing the pawn on move 20 & the ensuing exchanges & ended up down a pawn.

Well played game by charvik.
